We're months into this pandemic and still don't have proper testing, PPE, or clear nationwide guidance. Instead, Donald Trump:
– Pushes dangerous, disproven drugs
– Stands in the way of the CDC
– Refuses to wear a maskHe is failing even the most basic test of leadership.

Long (important) thread on testing:
1. I'm a strong advocate of testing as an important pillar of the coronavirus pandemic response.
There is often confusion about what testing offers, and I think it's helpful to distinguish between three roles that testing can play.

When we have a stack of reporting that the White House put the brakes on testing (e.g. https://t.co/BRhPEbatII; https://t.co/zttbTWkHCB), and the president openly admits he ordered his people to slow it down, we should not have to spend a day debating whether it was a sick joke.

Malaysia’s daily numbers. 15 new cases: 13 cases from local infection, all non-Malaysians; two cases from imported infection, both Malaysians returning from abroad. Total 8,587 cases.

Companies and societies will also be allowed to hold their legally required annual general meetings from July.

Malaysia, for one, is not allowing citizens to go on this year’s Haj. I mean, the Haj traditionally involves, among other things, spending most of a week in a tent city with two million-plus neighbours from all over the world. Would anyone feel safe doing that right now?

Trump is bored. The virus has inconvenienced him, its cut into his golfing, it has stalled the economy, the rising numbers are a bothersome bit of news that stands in direct opposition to the campaign. All this talk of cv is an affront to MAGA, and MAGA will not be mocked. Testing is a nuisance – it just is not in the best interest of the campaign so it is not necessary and because it’s not necessary it will not be done. Trump is not responsible at all. Trump alone can fix it. We’ve tested 5 million. Everybody who wants a test can get a test. There will be a vaccine in October. Masks are an affront to MAGA. Faith is a protection from the virus – which is a well known hoax. Silver solution kills the virus immediately. The economy needs to open up and all you people need to go back to work because MAGA is bored and freedom doesn’t mean boredom.
This weeks potential for exponential case increases should not be happening. But we have an arrogant moron in charge who is incapable of anything remotely resembling concern caring about the lives of others. And the “joke” about slowing down testing is just so much depraved indifference.

After reporting 22 domestic confirmed, 3 suspect and 3 asymptomatic cases on 6/20, Beijing reported 9 confirmed, 2 suspect and 5 asymptomatic cases on 6/21. While the case numbers may be trending down, an increasing percentage of cases no longer have direct connection with the Xinfadi wholesale produce exchange. A few of the cases reported on 6/20 were identified when they visited fever clinics, as opposed to traced and quarantined, or caught during the mass screening. This indicates that the authorities still have not identified all of the clusters, and are still not yet ahead of the outbreak. 3 workers at 2 construction sites have been infected, causing the sites to be shut down. I see plenty of construction workers in Wuhan, Shenzhen and Shanghai either not wearing mask or improperly wearing mask. 8 workers at a Pepsico potato chip factory in Beijing’s southern suburbs have been infected. When the first confirmed case was identified on 6/15, the factory was immediately shut down, all employees asked to self-quarantine, and close contacts went into centralized quarantine. The major reason businesses, companies and office tower management take extreme precautions with employees and visitors (generally well beyond the guidelines set by the authorities), is the fact that a single confirmed case will result in immediate shut down of the premises, which has a huge impact on business operations. No one wants to take that chance.
The mysterious confirmed case (restaurant worker at a 5 star hotel) in Tianjin has now been deemed a case of human to human transmission (as opposed to fomite transmission from food). Although the case does not have any travel history or known contact with people connected to the Xinfadi exchange, one of his coworkers (a chef), visited Beijing several times in the weeks before the outbreak at Xinfadi was detected and announced. It is not known if the chef ever visited Xinfadi, but he did attend several gatherings while in Beijing. He had tested negative on RT-PCR, and shows no symptoms, but is positive for IgM antibodies, suggesting current or recent infection.
Beijing is indeed learning to be more targeted in response to new COVID-19 outbreaks, from both past outbreaks in China (Harbin, Mudanjiang, Jilin City) and those overseas (Seoul). Locking down city districts, especially in a huge metropolis like Beijing, is highly disruption and damaging. The currently outbreaks does not justify such a heavy-handed response. One could argue that the district level lock downs in Jilin City and Mudanjiang were overkill, as well. Instead, Beijing is modulating the epidemic response at the sub-district level (neighborhood, community , residential compound). On the other hand, Beijing is flooding the zone in terms of testing and tracing, quickly ramping up testing capacity from < 100K / day to > 230K / day.

@WereBear:
A very late addition to my earlier reply: The House of Saud prides itself on being the de facto custodian of Islam’s holiest places (those not in Jerusalem, anyway), this being a major source of its prestige in the Muslim world, and devotes a lot of resources to ensuring the safety and health of pilgrims. Right now it is not letting people in to do an Umrah (out of season pilgrimage that doesn’t count as a Haj). It doesn’t make sense to have that restriction and let the much more risky Haj run as usual.
