I’m not sure why this makes me so happy; it’s not like deposed Papaya Pinochet is my close neighbor, but nonetheless, a new item joins the very short list of things I like about summer:
Trump relocating to New Jersey after Mar-A-Lago closes for summer: Sources
Former president Donald Trump may temporarily move from Florida to another one of his properties in New Jersey.
The twice-impeached one-term president and his team may relocate from his Mar-A-Lago resort to his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, unnamed Trump advisers told Business Insider.
“They’re moving the whole operation to New Jersey because they’re going to start doing more fundraising,” said one Trump advisor familiar with the discussions.
The Palm Beach resort, where Trump has lived since leaving the White House, closes just after Memorial Day due to the hot and humid weather in South Florida.
To paraphrase my tweet upon hearing the news earlier, I figured that walking heap of overfilled liposuction clinic medical waste bags wouldn’t have the fortitude to endure the hellish, skull-pounding heat and suffocating humidity of a Florida summer.
“Florida Man” my ass!
Hopefully the entire school of remoras that suction onto Trump’s flabby fuselage will make the trip north with him, not just the ones currently shaking down GOP marks. Oh wait, that’s all of them, isn’t it?
Anyhoo, bon voyage-y, dickheads! Sorry for your luck, Jerseyites — have fun hosting that pack of heat-intolerant chudwagons until Labor Day!

What a pussy.
And why are they closing down for summer, they don’t want to run up their A/C bills or something???
trump should never have been allowed to “live” at Mar-A-Lago, mostly because it wasn’t zoned to be a residence in the first place. How he got around that rule is a goddamned shame.

Looking forward to my state hitting him up for income taxes for the duration of his residency.
Not looking forward to him living an hours drive away from my house.

I was worried about DeSantis being unwilling to extradite Trump and what kind of national/legal struggle that might turn into, but, hey, moving closer to the site of the future trial is fine by me.

I am surprised that Mar-a-Lago closes for the summer. Don’t people go to Florida precisely for the hot weather? The weather there in summer is the same as in Malaysia, and in the Before Times we had loads of tourists coming here.

My guess is that he feels more isolated in FLA. He wants to be closer to the East coast action — trying to be more relevant as he recedes further and further from relevancy — despite all the brave talk from the GQP. Also, the heat was making his fat ass leave more and more of a grease trail when he tried to golf or do anything remotely active. Like a pat of butter on a hot grittle. He looked terrible the last time I saw a picture of him (more terrible than usual anyway). I don’t think that the environment down there was helpful to him physically or mentally.
Mike in NC
“Unnamed Trump advisors” is a euphemism for sad sacks like Stephen Miller and Jason Miller, who are unemployable.
Joe Falco
Mar-a-Lago was not meant to be used as a permanent residence per the agreement between the local government and TFG anyway (but honoring agreements are for chumps which is probably a family motto of TFG’s). In any event, good; it would be one less vile and wretched thing in Florida for a time. Now if only DeSantis could be convinced to move as well.

I was reading a thread on FB posted by someone I know about the new law in Oklahoma allowing people to run over people in their car if they’re protesting in a roadway. It’s one thing to know people feel this way, but it’s something else to read comment after comment saying “Yeah, glad they passed this law” and “Ford should put cowcatchers on the front of their trucks”. Some of these people cannot wait for an excuse to drive into a crowd of protesters! It was horrible.

I checked visually like 10 days ago and Trump’s 757 Trump Force One/N757AF/T-Bird was still parked at New York Stewart International Airport. Didn’t get a good enough look to verify that the port engine is still missing. The intended plan in late 2020 was to scrounge an engine good for a single flight to a repair place in Louisiana, and then have it fixed and maintenance done. It’s been sitting at that airport, outside next to the runway, for a while.
This (probably) means he’s too poor or cheap to keep his luxury plane flying. (He has a smaller aircraft.)
Time for another visual check, just to top up on schadenfreude.
Ken
Yes, but that’s from October through May.

He’s been surprisingly low-energy ever since his insurrection failed. If I were an ambitious would-be dictator, I’d be out there holding big rallies and firing up the rubes, if for no other reason than to take the focus off Biden’s accomplishments. I think we are eventually going to find out he has long covid, in addition to everything else that ails him.
Betty Cracker
@Elie: Someone writing in one of the political gossip rags — Politico or Axios, probably — opined that Florida has been great for Trump. Supposedly he’s stopped painting his face orange because he has an actual tan from golfing every single day and that the exercise from said golfing has helped him lose 20 pounds.
I am skeptical. For one thing, he drives the cart right up to the greens, so what exercise? I don’t think walking five feet from cart to ball, swinging, putting and kicking the ball toward the cup count as exercise.
Matt McIrvin
@Amir Khalid: One difference between Malaysia and Florida in the summer is that in the tropics, the daytime is only ever 12 hours long.

Sister Golden Bear
I know I’ve been in Cassandra-mode about the current wave of anti-trans bills being considered, and passed, in 38 states.
But I did want to celebrate progress: Republicans are quietly giving up on some of the anti-trans/LGBTQ bills, and Republican governors have actually successfully vetoed a few of them.
Many thanks to the trans people and their allies who have fought hard for these victories. As well as to the Biden administration, which continues rolling by anti-trans policies of the TFG’s administration — today they rolled back a policy that enabled homeless shelters to deny services to trans people.
Sadly there’s still plenty more bills still out there. But it makes me slightly more hopeful. Slightly.
J.
Dear New Jersey, please claim that Trump is a New Jersey resident and go after him for tax evasion.
(I realize this probably won’t happen, but I can always hope. Still pissed that Palm Beach caved and allowed Trump to live at Mar-a-Lago when by his agreement with the city he wasn’t allowed to live there or claim it as his residence.)
And @BettyCracker, did you see that Michael Flynn bought a place in Englewood? I just pray that the rumors of Mike Pence buying a place on Sanibel are false.
Jim, Foolish Literalist

@Sister Golden Bear: The anti-trans bill in Florida supposedly died in the senate because the part-timers in the statehouse didn’t have time to cram in all the nasty authoritarian legislation they were hoping to pass in the session. I’m sure they’ll try to resurrect it when they think it’s politically advantageous, but good riddance for now anyway.

@Amir Khalid: Some do come to Florida for the “hot” (November thru mid-April) weather, some hardy souls make it to Memorial Day Monday. Only foolish tourists and natives stay for June, July and August, although some natives decamp for North Cackelacky. That is why you have lots of “FloridaMan/Woman stories in the summer, the heat and humidity can make one crazy as a shithouse rat.
Betty Cracker
@jonas: I’m not really surprised since it’s a private, limited membership club for people who can afford to pay $200K a year for dues. My guess is most people with that much money don’t stick around for the summer.
Most places that serve the public in FL do seem to stay open year round, but lots scale back operations during off-season. Every golf course I know of offers summer discounts because its so damn hot.
texasdoc
I have to laugh about the move from Florida to New Jersey. Anyone who has ever been in New Jersey knows how hot and humid it is there in the summer. I’m not sure it’s any more comfortable for outdoor activities at all. I remember trying to play golf in the early morning at McGuire AFB, thinking it would be cooler, and ending up just drenched in sweat!
gvg
@PaulWartenberg: Actually it was originally a residence and he needed a zoning exemption to make it a club. Part of the approval was he wouldn’t also live there. What the should have done is revoke the club approval. Bet that would get his attention.
Old School
@Betty Cracker: While people with that much money may not stick around for the summer, I’m surprised that $200K per year for dues is really $200K for nine months.

It’s unseasonably cool here in Los Angeles, and the Summers are always very mild at nearby Trump National Golf Course in Palos Verdes. Fortunately for us, there’s no hotel or residence at Trump National for him to haunt temporarily as The Summer Ghoul – as if he could motorcade from LAX to PV without encountering angry villagers with torches and pitchforks.

No, they come for the warm weather in the cold seasons, not the hot hot hot weather of summer. I like it myself, but I am a native Floridian.
I don’t know anything about your tourists though. We do get plenty in the summer too because that is when kids are out of school and families can travel. Mar A Largo is for rich people who have multiple homes and live wherever is perfect at the moment, not middle class people.

If you want to go to the beach on the Gulf side of Florida off season starts the Monday after Memorial Day from St. Pete down with exception of Sanibel/Captiva, no off season there. Historically Palm Beach has always shut down after Memorial Day due to migration cycles of the idle rich going back to the 1st Gilded Age.

@Old School: I don’t think I ever heard about it being closed for the summer either, but I do remember the walking McDonald’s dumpster trying to make “Winter White House” a thing, and I don’t ever recall him visiting Disgraceland during the summer. @trollhattan: According to these stats, the District of Columbia does fairly well despite its lack of extractive industries, with a higher GDP than 17 states.
I’m kind of surprised Nebraska ranks lower, I guess corn and ethanol aren’t all that profitable. And Alaska is surprisingly far down the list, wedged in between the Dakotas.

The difference is, that in places like NJ and NC, where it can get quite hot ( also minnesota!) , it occasionally cools down in the summer. That never happens in FL and Miss.

@Doc Sardonic: I can’t imagine how bad FL must be if North Cackalacky offers significant relief in the summer. I mean, I live in MD and it’s awful here from late June through early September. North Cackalacky is a full State South and has to be at least marginally worse. If FL is worse than that it must be awful. I guess the higher mountains of NC around Asheville might offer some relief but anywhere else it’s got to be pretty brutal. I grew up in Michigan…summer there is glorious.
geg6

Golf isn’t a sport, it’s a social activity. As for it being exercise, wellllll… The only president who golfed more than Trump was Taft, and he was also famously our fattest president. And that was back before the invention of those sissy golf carts, so Taft was hoofing it through the entire course. Lose weight golfing? I don’t THINK so!
But what baffles me is Trump’s recent aversion for that dictator-chic gold-plated skybox of his in Manhattan. He ran his whole dang transition from there and since being inaugurated, I think he’s only been back there once. He wouldn’t even stay there when he was in NYC for events; I think he stayed at Bedminster and motorcaded or choppered in.

@WaterGirl: TFG’s administration did enacted policies that LGBTQ folks can be denied medical care. Because religious freedom. Thankfully, it was one of the first things Biden repealed.
A number of the bills also ban — or even criminalize — providing trans-related health care to trans kids. I’m blanking on the state at the moment, but four trans kids in that state attempted suicide the week after it passed because they could no longer get the care they needed. These sorts of bills will kill people.

I’ve read TFG actually drives his golf cart ON the green, which get you banned and sent a hefty bill for repairing the green (the cart would leave ruts which would ruin the green). Same as TFG wanting many tanks in DC for 4th of July, which would ruin the roads, but he doesn’t care about ruining things. Ruining things is basically his brand, and the brand of the GQP.
