Aaron Rodgers is the latest person for me to go from “Hrmm don’t know much about him” to “What a fucking tool” in lightning speed. For those of you who have not been following along, Rodgers plays Sportsball and throws said ball for a team in the Wisconsin region, and is apparently quite good at throwing that sportsball. This spring, when the NFL stated that all players need to be vaccinated, Rodgers went to his primary care physician to receive the vaccine, and as he was about to receive the injection, the woke mob burst into the office, slapped the needle out of the nurse’s hand, and destroyed the entire stock of vaccine, preventing him from following the NFL mandate and getting the protection from COVID that he deserved.
Oh. Nevermind. That’s not what happened at all:
After “talking to a lot of medical individuals and professionals,” Rodgers said, he “found an immunization protocol that he could go through to best protect myself” that didn’t involve getting one of the three available vaccines. He said later that he also had consulted with podcaster Joe Rogan, his “now good friend” who said he treated his own covid bout with ivermectin, an anti-parasitic that the Food and Drug Administration has said is not an effective treatment for the disease. Rodgers said he also had taken ivermectin, which can only be obtained with a prescription.
“I’m thankful for people like Joe stepping up and using his voice,” Rodgers said.
Aaron Rodgers said he did the research on covid vaccines. Here’s how he was wrong, according to experts
Rodgers said he petitioned the Packers and the NFL during the preseason to accept this alternate protocol — he “gathered over 500 pages of research on the efficacy of immunizations,” he said — but said he realized he would not win his argument when one of the NFL’s doctors told him “it was impossible for a vaccinated person to get covid or spread covid … which we know now that that information is totally false.” Rodgers later decried that the league did not offer any opportunity to consider “alternative medicines.”
In short, a guy who receives blows to the head as his primary source of income did his own “research” which included rigorous discussion with his MMA friend/podcaster/least talented member of the News Radio cast (a cast that included Andy Dick), and decided to not get vaccinated. He then lied to the NFL and everyone about his status. Now he has contracted covid, fucked over his team, and is in a position where he has to reckon with the consequences of his own actions, has done the mature thing and admitted he fucked up lashed out at everyone and taken absolutely zero responsibility for the mess he is in.
I say again, there is NOTHING ON THE PLANET that rich white dudes fear and loathe more than the consequences of their own actions. Asshole.

Reports today are that Rodgers kept both the team and the league informed about his status and complied with the rest of the protocols for non-vaccinated players at team and road game facilities.
Given the protocol differences, I wonder if this is a violation of the league rules about public release of information about health status (to avoid the appearance of insider information for gamblers). What’s infuriating is these people (Rodgers, Rogan, etc) take monoclonal antibodies, which are relatively expense and relatively scarce, and that is what saves them from serious illness. But they don’t mention it, and mention the idiotic invermectin or hydroxychloroquine they are taking. It’s disgraceful.

My stepdaughter’s mother had MS when she got pregnant. She hoped for the best, but no way was that happening. When her mother’s health collaspsed she ended up for six years in terrifyingly awful fostercare, in a family that beat their own child to death. Abortion is not the worst thing that can happen to a child.
Stepdaughter’s mother was, when she could be, the best mother imaginable.
My stepdaughter is angry at a mother who did everything imaginable enough to protect her child, and it wasn’t nearly enough.

@raven: I wish I knew something to tell you. One thing I do know is get it diagnosed so it can be treated. You can hold it at bay, but you can’t back up and unwind. You can keep it from getting worse, but it is hard to make it better. But there are all sorts of amazimg treatments Sarah’s mother never had. My mom’s healthcare aide’s son has had it for twenty years and still is walking, often without a walker. Sarah’s mom was dead at that point.

@raven:
Can you make an appointment with a neurologist? Or get a referral to one? MS has different forms and it is not easy to diagnose, especially by a family doctor. You need a neurologist to make that diagnosis with several different diagnostic tests.

@Citizen Alan: These guys, or some of them, live in such a rarefied bubble that they can’t really imagine doing something that would have consequences. Good quarterbacks are rare and insulated from all kinds of real world pain. Many, not all, seem not to get that their skills and desirability are not generalizable to everything else they do. If they come across as jerks they might lose other opportunities. I had not pegged Rodgers this way but I did understand he is something of a prima donna.
Humdog
I’ve sometimes wondered about how good quarterbacks grow up. Probably since he was nine, a boy with exceptional sports talent doesn’t experience the world like other kids. Now, I’m not at all sorry for them, but they’ve been held up above everyone most of their lives. Their shortcomings have been ignored or covered up, like the breaks they get from schooling. Girls rarely turn them down, and if the boy doesn’t stop when one does, that will be covered up as well.
Loud public approbation has never been directed at them. Even losing a game can be blamed on poor receivers or bad line protection.
being treated like others feels like persecution when they’ve lived their whole lives on a pedestal.

As someone who grew up idolizing Bart Starr and being a transplanted cheesehead for over half a century (God, that was a scary sentence to write);through their championship years and their laughingstock decades, nothing has hurt me as much as this. It was not the COVID that angers me as much as the callous indifference to his teammates, and to the fans, as well. He deceived them all, and evidently believed that the rules didn’t apply to him.
Worse still, when reality caught up, he acted as if he was the victim, and not the teammates he betrayed and possibly infected. If they somehow manage to win the Super Bowl, it will still be too late. Send him packing, to the Jets or the Dolphins..

Nice job of follow-up by McAfee.

I disagree with you on the last and salient point, John. The rich loathe poverty even more, and by extension, the poor, as well. In support of this contention, consider the risks taken to enrich one’s own economic interests and self often include staking their very life and freedom on the gamble. Not to mention all the collateral death and damage done to others.
I also blame educators. The American voters are very low information. The media plays a role too. All this pearl-clutching over Virginia was odd, but there is reason to be anxious. I remember Adam’s post from about a year ago, which basically prepared some of us not to expect a normal “return to normalcy.” Whatever that was, and it wasn’t so great. I heard “expect the unexpected” because we really have no idea where this goes. Allan Bloom presciently published The Closing of the American Mind back in the 1980s. I think he was on to something.
Fiction got there first. Idiocracy was based on Cyril M. Kornbluth’s The Marching Morons.
I don’t think Donald is very good with words the way Dorothy Parker was. Although this is often misattributed to her, she may have restated it with more panache.
