It’s postcards and music time!
If you’re writing postcards for Virginia or for Issue 1 in Ohio, please mail them by Tuesday, October 31. (or sooner)
If you want to write for Ohio Issue 1, I have addresses from the Ohio peeps who wrote for us with Voces addresses for the Wisconsin Spring Election! Time to return the favor! Postcards to Voters has Ohio addresses, also.
All the details on options for writing for Ohio Issue 1 and for Virginia – and images of postcards – are always available in the sidebar. To make it extra easy to find, I have copied it just below the postcard image.
Send me a photo of your postcards and I’ll post it in the thread.
This awesome postcard is from BlueGuitarist.
Political Action
This is our last postcard thread for awhile. Postcard peeps will have to alert me to important campaigns that may be coming up in the next few months.
Open thread.
WaterGirl
This morning I watched the Arlo Guthrie version first, where he tells the story of how Steve Goodman approached him at a bar and wanted Arlo to listen to a song.
Then I watched the Steve Goodman version of the song, and he sings it so much faster than Arlo did! tragic that Steve Goodman died so young. I saw him in concert at a small venue and he was amazing.
Then I watched the Willie Nelson version. Slower than Steve Goodman, but faster than Arlo Guthrie.
I loved all three.
Craig
Steve Goodman wrote great songs
WaterGirl
@Craig: He really did.
In concert, when I saw Steve Goodman, he had people in the audience shout out random words, and he turned them into lyrics and sang a song, on the spot.
Mousebumples
I’ll keep an eye on campaigns! And I will let you know if something significant is on going.
Hoping we can do this again next fall, if not sooner.
I’m off to tonight’s concert shortly, but I wanted to check in to say hi.
I’m hoping to write postcards on our hours long drive home tomorrow. Anyone up for a last postcards thread on Monday night?
Happy writing!
MagdaInBlack
Thank you, WG. One of my all time faves, whatever version. I don’t mind this earworm at all ❤️
mrmoshpotato
I thought tonight was Metalpalooza? No?
Craig
@WaterGirl: apparently this one is perfect
Scout211
I’m here to cheer on all the postcard writers. Thank you all!
I’d like to share Miley Cyrus’s latest release. I heard it on my car radio and was very touched by the song. It’s a song about her coming of age and maturing into adulthood. The music and lyrics are beautiful, IMHO.

Dangerman
John Prine’s version of “Big Old Goofy World” shall never be topped …
… but this version with Tuba is a fine cover.
Seems apropos.
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Oh, you’re right, it was!
But when brendancalling sent me the playlist and the “blurb” to go with it, i discovered that he had put together this amazing long document.
From brendancalling:
Between the postcard info and the document, I thought the post would be too long – in my experience, BJ peeps don’t read posts that are too long. So we’re going to have a music post, maybe on Friday night where there’s enough time and enough people on the thread to do justice to all his work.
So blame it on me, not on brendancalling.
Dangerman
Actually, this would have been a better choice of John Prine for this thread; much bigger hit for someone else just like CONO.
WaterGirl
@Dangerman: Great song! I don’t think I have heard that from John Prine before. It seems more lighthearted.
Alison Rose
“It’s Not Up To You” – Björk
“Apple Blossom” – The White Stripes
“Sleepwalker” – Marc Almond
“Real Life” – The Weeknd
“Be Free With Me” – Siine featuring Frank Moody
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl: I see. Looking forward to it.
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Maybe this coming Friday. He is still checking his schedule.

I saw our delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates today. He sounded optimistic, but of course everyone should keep working.
I also voted today – not much of a line, but people were coming in steadily. The Dem tent outside the polling place was well-staffed, while the Republican tent had one cranky guy. (Plus the Republican tent had some sign about parents, not porn, in the schools and a handwritten message board warning of the dangers of one-party control of a government. Very very strange.)
Dangerman
One more related to John Prine but not his song (well, other than he is in the title).
Excluding the references to, um, bad behavior, this could be the BJ theme song.
Hopefully linked to where music starts.
eclare
Wow, Matthew Perry from Friends has died at 54. Drowning.
oldgold
The Baseball, Postcards and Music posts caused me to laugh out loud.
Alison Rose
@eclare: OMG. Jeez, I wonder what happened. The report has little info, but says no drugs found at the scene and no foul play involved, but like…an adult man doesn’t usually just drown in a hot tub with nothing causing it. How awful :(
eclare
@Alison Rose:
I know, at first I thought ocean, but then I read hot tub. I wonder if he had a heart attack and fell unconscious…
Friends is one of my comfort shows. I’m pretty much the actors’ age, and it was shown at the right time in my life.
Alison Rose
@eclare: Sounds like it might have been something like that. God, that’s just terrible. He’d struggled a lot with substance dependency. 54 is so damn young.
eclare
@Alison Rose:
Yeah but you know after years of abuse his body was much older than 54 biologically. So sad.
Craig
This amazing open to Cowboy Bebop is so fantastic. I love that marching bands at ball games and jazz fest play this now. Memory Hole the live action version on Netflix.
russell
I could be wrong (most likely am wrong) but my understanding has always been that John Prine wrote “City Of New Orleans” and gave the publishing to Goodman to help a brother out.
But, I could be wrong.

@randy khan: In Illinois we can’t have any signs or anything within x number of feet of the polling place. How can they have signs?
mvr
@Dangerman: That was really nice!
Craig
This insane record from Finnish metal band Oranssi Pazuzu from 2016 is epic. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but give it a try, very psychedelic.
WaterGirl
@eclare: I looked it up. He drowned in a hot tub. Which makes me wonder if maybe drugs or alcohol could have been involved. The only way you can drown in a hot tub – without foul play – would be if you passed out.
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl: He could’ve somehow hit his head.
prostratedragon
@Craig: Great opening. Only saw the show a couple of times, but liked it. Speaking of noir, tonight Eddie Mueller has Experiment in Terror queued up; opening title sequence with a different feeling.
mvr
@russell: I’ve never heard that before and really (repeat really many times) doubt it.
Got to see SG in Illinois a couple of times in high school at a club that used to let us underage music fans in so long as we didn’t drink or flaunt our youth. And then saw both SG and JP together in a School Auditorium in Portland Oregon in around 1984. Steve was bald and hid it under a Cubs hat, and John was himself and the love between them was evident in the show. Steve died not too long after that, iirc but I did not hear of it for some time. Glad I got to see them together.
NotMax
@WaterGirl
At first blush sounds like he suffered a stroke.
His history with licit and illicit substances is well documented, also too.
mvr
@mvr: Goodman wrote City of New Orleans in 1971 or before since he recorded it then. Most sources have him meeting John Prine in the mid-70s.
NotMax
@prostratedragon
Lush strings coming in a dead giveaway it’s Mancini.
;)
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Yeah, you could hit your head by slipping when you are getting in or out. I imagine the position of his body would make it obvious one way or another.
Terrible news. Which I should have started with!
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl: Yeah – 54 is way too young. Guess we’ll find more from the autopsy.
prostratedragon
@NotMax: It would be the first guess, wouldn’t? Here’s another, less lush fragment he used in that score, though I first heard it from a Peter Gunn episode of a few years before: “White on White.” At the moment it sounds like a bittersweet reflection on drowning in the bathtub.

I was in a 6-hour Zoom event that just ended, so I’m going to log off and lie low tonight – but I wanted to drop in long enough to send good wishes and thanks to the postcards-and-music crowd.
See you when next we do this! 2024 will be lit. :)
BlueGuitarist
Thanks for all the postcard and fundraising threads WaterGirl.
You are totally awesome!
& thanks and praise to all the postcard peeps, angels, donors, contributors of good cheer, music, news, insight, and humor. Yay for Balloon-Juice.

@WaterGirl:
Thank you for these too. I was always partial to Willie’s jazz stuff, when he recorded stuff like that. I have that album though, and enjoy it.
Have a pleasant evening,

WaterGirl
@Scout211: Just listened to the song, it is beautiful.
brendancalling
@mrmoshpotato: it’s on the way. My blurb is really long, and it’s probably going to be a music thread.

This video was taken in my living room a long time ago — that’s our friend Tom Colwell speaking about playing with Steve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlBX3xWpfXM&t=80s
And just because it popped up while I was looking for the Steve Goodman story, here’s Tom and his band leading a singalong at the Seattle Folklife Festival, in a more hopeful time than tonight seems to be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz4_Dm5NYXU
mvr
@hitchhiker: Thanks! That was a nice little story.
WaterGirl
@hitchhiker: That’s a great story about Steve Goodman. I’m have your other link open in a tab, saving that for tomorrow. Love Pete Seeger.
