Sitting in the hotel drinking warmish chardonnay out of a paper cup. Not sure what is on the itinerary tonight, but I’m going to surf the newfangled intertubes and see if I can find some live music somewhere. If there is no live music to be had, I’ll settle for a microbrewery. If that fails, looks like a night of making caustic remarks on right-wing blogs with an assumed name and a fresh IP address.
You gotta have goals and priorities in life.

If you were willing to give us a general idea of your greater vicinity, some here might be able to direct you to some interesting haunts. Or you can persist in your international spy/whereabouts must remain secret. Suit yourself.
mellowjohn
can’t argue with your rankings, but i might try to combine #1 and #2.
Garbo
Will you be home in time for the game? I’m suddenly in a panic for you. Don’t they know what weekend this is? Dang.
TaMara (BHF)
@Garbo: Yeah, I’m with Garbo, I was wondering why you were on the road during the big game weekend. Anyone got big plans for the game? Whatcha cooking?
Punchy
If you give us the general location of your location, I’d be very likely to tell you what bands to see.
Parallel 5ths (Jewish Steel)
Why not do all three?
John Cole
@Phyllis: I like traveling solo and winging it.
Although since I haven’t been drinking for months in an attempt to become less of a disgusting fatbody, I’m already a touch tipsy after two glasses of wine. If I finish this entire bottle, I may not even make it out before I’m crying to Joe Cocker like John Boehner at a press conference.
On the other hand, this is the first time my shoulders, knees, and fingers have not hurt in months. So there is that.
Yutsano
@TaMara (BHF): I’m doing a potluck at work next week and I promised corn and black bean salad. Which is fine, but I really wanna do guacamole too since it’s the Super Bowl and I’ve been kinda craving it. Nothing says I can’t do both…
Gustopher
A lot of brew pubs have wifi. You might get 1-3 in one fell swoop!
BGinCHI
Cole, where are you?
If you want us to be bossy about culture/entertainment, we need something to go on.
You better hurry though, cuz it sounds like you’re just clicks away from pay porn.
John Cole
@Garbo: Had some work stuff to take care of, and since I don’t discuss that, we’ll leave it at that.
I’ve got a wakeup call at 7 am, so I will be home to take the piglets to the park, take a shower and a nap and then another shower, and then gear up for game day.
Michael Bersin
I never did mind about the little things.

Wait, I thought John (no relation to Kenneth or Juan) Cole *was* an assumed name.

I’m hoping for the fake name and rude comments, with a full report.

Since it’s Black History Month, I think it’s time to have that discussion about race we are all talking about…
Right! I’ll start…
Why do white British singers seem to have more soul than American white singers?? This song is fire. Watch it with your eyes closed and tell me you would have automatically thought it was a white chick. I’m loving it! Couldn’t you hear Jill Scott or Lauryn Hill singing this song! It has call and response gospel feel to it, especially at the breakdown where all you hear is the back beat…just the drums.
Adele – Rolling In The Deep

Yeah, go rattle the cages at redstate.com before those poor sensitive babies over there ban you.
Garbo
@John Cole: Relief. Probably better to keep you occupied and distracted. Only so many times one can drape and re- drape Terrible Towels over the coach arm for Tunch.
gbear
@John Cole:
I’m a fan of early Joe Cocker, but what song by him makes you want to cry? The only Joe Cocker that brings tears to my eyes is the last couple notes of ‘You Are So Beautiful’. Well, that plus his entire live album.
I’m crying over the break-up of The White Stripes. Tasty tears of joy. I’m hoping to hear Jack White say that he had to get outside of the confines of the ‘band’ in order to do his solo material.
After I post this I will hit F5, delete and refresh for the next five minutes.
Yutsano
@gbear: Apparently this lends evidence to the theory that one can indeed build a musical career exclusively on pretense.
Mike in NC
Reminds me of how many a time I’d be stuck in some motel or BOQ room, watching shitty DVDs and swilling some third rate cabernet from a Styrofoam cup. The good old days…
Redshift
Well, if the previous sleuthing about the mention of DC101 and (possibly) Arlington means that you’re in Arlington, VA, then the Birchmere (which is a great club) has Walter Beasley, who I’m not familiar with, but his site describes him as “the Highest selling full-time Professor/Recording Artist in modern history,” which is pretty amusing. They have good food, too.
And there are plenty of brewpubs around; Capitol City, Rock Bottom, Gordon Biersch.
BGinCHI
@Yutsano: See Idol, American.

Can someone explain to me how it can be that there is a movie On Demand from 2010 that stars and is directed by Rob Schneider? Pictures of studio heads in flagrante with goats in a safety deposit box?

Here’s a piece of backpacking gear that will help you do better than the paper cup thing for wine… http://www.rei.com/product/798280
The one I have is an older model w/ steel base which isn’t detachable, I harbor doubts as to the impact of the feature creep on the quality.

Also in DC at the Red and the Black, on the 10th:
You know fucking Scalia is gonna be rocking out that night. His favorite song is “Precedence My Ass (electric boogaloo).”

@lamh32:
Louis Armstrong. I’m somewhat joking but not really. He was very popular in Britian. He was so wonderful.
I have my doubts that my comment makes sense, but the Brits have a rep for stiff upper lip and they are full of feeling.
Perhaps the US, with all the monotonous malls etc. has lost some personality.
Redshift
@BGinCHI: That’s cruel. I don’t think Cole could possibly survive that, especially after a bottle of chardonnay.
eemom
hmmm, seems to me there is a lovely lady of your bloggeresque acquaintance who who resides in the Capitol Hill area with her poodles. Maybe you could “link” up fer realz this time, tee hee.
Not to worry, you won’t run into any of US there.
Elroy's Lunch
Saw the reference to DC101 earlier also. If you’re in the Arlington area try wandering up or down Wilson Blvd and checking out Iota for a small, local music venue. No brewpubs nearby but plenty of establishments around to get some craft-brew beers.
You Don't Say
@John Cole: I thought you were on your way to the Super Bowl.

@lamh32: I love this song, and yes, my mental image of the singer was something along the lines of a mature Grace Jones. Imagine my surprise when I found out Adele was a lovely, chubby little British woman.

Goddammit Cole, gimmie a fucking zip code so I can triangulate your distance from the nearest Split Lip Rayfield show.

If in the DC area try Velvet Lounge. Small time local bands that you’ve never heard of, $5 cover, tiny club (50 is a crowd upstairs where the bands at least used to play). Always fun.
gbear
@BD of MN: Yep, but White was the drummer on some of his side projects. I’ve seen some interviews where he’s said that he thought Meg was a crummy drummer right from the start.
It always strikes me as weird when one half of a two-person band needs to go off and do solo albums (Wham!, Black Keys, etc). I mean, you only had one other person you had to work with.

@Left Coast Tom: I prefer lexan to stainless for camping with wine. The take-apart-for-packing actually is great–stows much more easily in my kitchen kit.

@Mark S.: As it said at the bottom of the menu at a Chinese place I used to go to:

I’ve lived in D.C. Metro my entire life but I’m such a dork I have no idea where you should go or what you should do.
No, I take that back: You should go to Ben’s Chili Bowl and eat until you’re sick. Then waddle across the street to Dukem and get some Ethiopian to eat in the morning. (Warning: You will have to ride on the dreaded GREEN LINE.) I think there are some clubs where the cool kids hang down there as well.
Is Busboys & Poets still over there?
Violet
Well at least the Steelers didn’t have ice from Cowboy Stadium fall on their players. That’s something.

That song has been stuck in my head all day, and I have no idea why. Just got home from a looooong day of work, clicked on Balloon-Juice, saw this title, and thought, “weird.”
Apropos of nothing, really. But still, that’s bizarre.
JenJen
@freelancer (itouch): Speaking of Malkin… Evgeni Malkin looks to be out for the season following last night’s injury. Not good news for Cole’s beloved Pens and I’m pretty bummed about it, too.
That was the Malkin you were talking about, right? ;-)

Fuck. I may have to root for the Steelers. Their receivers coach is a Duke guy.

@eemom:
The Birchmere and the 9:30 are most likely to have good live music on any given Saturday night. Next most likely is the Ram’s Head in Annapolis. Also the Barns at Wolf Trap.
I’ve been going to the 9:30 since it was at 930 F St., and I’ve been going to the Birchmere since it was in the old A&P shopping center on Arlington Ridge Rd. Yes, I am that old.
Left Coast Tom
@Currants: For longer trips I take liquors, appropriately repacked. So when I’m backpacking w/ wine, there’s enough spare room in my bear canister for the wine “glass”, without breaking it down.
eemom
@burnspbesq:
dude….I’ll see your “I’m that old,” and raise it with an I had no idea the 9:30 club had even MOVED from F Street, until last year when my daughter, then 15, wanted to go to a concert there.
HOWEVER. You probably have been gone too long to know about Jammin Java. It is an actual hot spot right here in burby old Vienna.
burnspbesq
I have a pile of new vinyl to listen to. Hmmm … do I start with the Decembrists, Social Distortion, or the Autumn Defense?
burnspbesq
@eemom:
A hot spot in Vy-Anna? I’ll take your word for it. When I lived in Fairfax, the only reason to go into downtown Vy-Anna was to go to Anita’s.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: Dammit. Don’t make me check the rosters for Cougs. It would bite if I had to go for the Stillers for that reason. I’d rather stew in my Seattle resentment TYVM.
Thoughtful Black Co-Citizen
@burnspbesq: If you remember what an A & P was, you ARE old. But then, so am I.
The only reason I knew 9:30 moved is because I knew someone who worked there.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq:
Social Distortion, but I’m only basing that off name. Save The Decembrists for last. It’ll be like dessert.
MikeJ
@burnspbesq: There was a pie shop there was awesome. I also wound up in that greek diner (WTF was the name of it?) at 3am many nights, even though I didn’t live there. (I worked in Tyson’s and people would often leave their cars in the company parking lot when we went out.)
burnspbesq
@MikeJ:
WTF was the name of it?
Amphora, I think. Went there a few times, but remember, I’m a Jersey boy. My standards for diners are awfully high.
MikeJ
@burnspbesq: Yep that was it. I never claimed it was good, but it was near Tyson’s Corner and open all night.

This place. Now that’s a greasy spoon.

Night shift checking in. Just got home from work. Anybody got anything to say, get it in now before I kill this thread like I did the one last night.
On the plus side, it’s champagne night at Chez Steep.
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: Mmm…champagne. I could handle some of that right about now.
And no cranky. You’re done with work dammit and it had better be your weekend. Don’t worry I’ll get on wifey if she’s cranky too, which is virtually guaranteed as Momma Hong is visiting. I may have to put on a cheerleader outfit or something.
burnspbesq
Well, well, well. Look who just supplanted Yale at the top of the ECAC D1 hockey league. Why, it’s the Union Dutchmen.
Then here’s to thee, thou brave and free
Old Union shining o’er us
And for many a day, as thy walls go gray
May they ring with thy children’s chorus.
It’s a boring melody, but it’s easy to sing when you’re drunk.
Steeplejack
@Yutsano:
Don’t worry, I’m not cranky, just tired and sore. My legs have never gotten used to standing on thinly carpeted concrete for 8-9 hours at a time. But, yes, it is now my weekend. Yee-haw!
Z. O. M. G. I did not see that coming. Let me know if rusty pitchforks need to be stashed off-site (for the safety of all concerned).
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: I half-expect a novella of a rant in my inbox here very soon. Whatever else will happen a Momma Hong visit tends to never end well. Especially when wifey can’t predict what sort of kick she’s on now.
burnspbesq
@Yutsano:
Why am I visualizing Kay Medford singing “Find Yourself a Man” from Funny Girl?
Steeplejack
@Yutsano:
Well, after killing a few of these recent threads I will retire to my meditation chamber and recite the Sutra of Weird Parental Relationships. Now where are my prayer beads?
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: I think Chinese mothers rival Jewish mothers for being terror on their adult childrens’ lives. It’s hard to pick a winner too as both cultures are about the same age. Of course wifey is Taiwanese but in this context that’s just a quibble.
@Steeplejack: I think they got stashed in the man-cave somewhere. Possibly hanging from a chandelier or ceiling fan.
Steeplejack
@Yutsano:
Ah, yes. I’ll check in the east wing.
Steeplejack
Dunno why, but the title of this thread made me think of this song. Cole’s theme for the weekend.
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: Some sort of brain association thing. I did the exact same thing with DougJ’s thread up above (not the necrophilia one).
Dan
Little Feat’s Skin it Back live dvd plus marijuana does make quite a nice saturday night.
John Cole needs this dvd in his life.
Steeplejack
@Yutsano:
You thought of that same song? Or you thought of some song equally unrelated to the post? (Trying to gauge how ZOMG! to get here.)
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: Hehehe. My brain went in a totally different direction than yours. The post title for some reason led me to this for some very strange and illogical reason. I had never heard the song you earwormed unti you played it tonight. Interestin since that was my style of 80’s music.
burnspbesq
Sometimes technology is a good thing.
I’m listening to a 1929 recording of Pablo Casals and Jacques Thibaud playing the Brahms Double Concerto, and the people who restored it did an amazing job. You can tell it’s an old recording because of how it was recorded (probably only two microphones), but it is crisp, present, and noise-free.
You can download it (along with Casals recordings of the Dvorak Cello Concerto and one of the Boccherini cello sonatas) here.

Old DC peoples hollah!
I’m so old I saw a rat run through the alley behind the old 9:30 club. I remember the electric buses!
My Amamah used to shop at the A&P in Mt. Ranier, because she lived across Chillum Rd. in a two-story apartment building with crank windows. She was the head dietician at DC General.
I won so many DC 101 trivia contests that boyish and adorable Program Director Dave started signing my gift certificates for free albums at Discount Records with a burnt orange crayon.
When The Fleshtones did an in-studio interview with Weasel on WHFS and asked to be invited to a barbecue, I called in and invited them to the crab feast my mom was throwing the next night. They asked for my address, but our weird town doesn’t have home mail delivery, so they asked how very small I was to live in a post office box.
It got hilarious when my girlfriend and I went to the Psychedelly that night and greeted Pete Zaremba.
O, nubility! We are clueless when we have it, and sad when we don’t.
