This cartoon is from last year — like any good reactionary, Santorum’s been banging the same dishonest themes since he started his campaign. With his help, we can look forward to Walmart explaining that they refuse to pay for insurance to cover “lifestyle-related” problems like heart disease and diabetes, on the highly moral grounds that such coverage only encourages employees to neglect their own best interests. And then Tyson will demand an exemption for repetitive stress injuries and cancer, because Job 5:7 clearly states that “Man was born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward“…

What’s going on this evening that doesn’t require a return to the worst of the Gilded Age?

That would explain why the liberated countries of Europe all proceeded to create universal (read: public) health insurance systems.

I liked this picture of the Westminster Dog show champs lunching at Sardi’s.
This bull terrier made me smile.

New Jersey Assembly Passes Gay Marriage Bill; Veto Promised – NYTimes.
Bring it on, Governor Heavy.
Would hope vetoing this will turn out to be poison for him.

I’ve discovered deep moral objections to all those depraved jackasses sending me all these damn bills.

If an employer is a Satanist, his conscience may compel him to require his employees to piss on a crucifix in exchange for health care coverage. I’m sure Santorum would have no problem with that.

@Bruce S: Wingnut welfare strikes again. How would any of these losers manage if they had to work for a living.

I would loathe them more but they lead cramped, miserable lives despite their money. Have you seen joy on any of their faces, ever? And the ones who don’t notice are the ones with the constipated hearts, themselves; groping in the dark for meaning and purpose.
Me? I’m whooping it up with a McD’s shamrock shake cause I just got paid and that’s what in the budget. And I still wouldn’t be Mitch McConnell on a straight swap; ‘cuz, ya know, he has no chin.

The sad truth is we have a lot of our current national health insurance system because of WWII. Companies were making so much money off the war that there was a nasty ground swell of anger. Since there were wage controls in place FDR and some of the biggies decided to throw workers a bone by giving workers free health insurance.
Both Roosevelt had it in their power to put national healthcare into law, neither did and I bet neither could have ever seen what we were going to get. If they had they might have pushed harder.

Well, you now, Germany had a public insurance system back then. And SS in america was more or less an import of the german system.
I blame Bismarck.

@Elizabelle:
You’re right, the bull terrior is pretty much my definition of “lovable mook.”

@trollhattan:
I want him!
Was underwhelmed by this year’s winner. Looks upholstered.

If may add that, the real conservatives in Prussia thought Bismarck was a conservative in name only.
(I traveled: health insurance in Germany in the thirties – origins of SS in the US – Bismarck as the founder of the german welfare state.)

@Elizabelle: The judges at this year’s show were obviously stacked with folks whose tastes run heavily to foo-foo dogs, the more frilly foo the better.
Seriously, a Pekingese was “best of show”?

@Schlemizel:
This is a little known fact. The labor shortage and inability to pay more forced them to find different ways to attract workers. Now in a time of labor surplus they’re finding that cutting benefits doesn’t cost them access to the best workers.

@Elizabelle:
As a serial Dal owner, I was REALLY pulling for the rare Dalmatian winner of [ahem] the non sporting group, but the entire family was united in our feeling that any of the finalists were fine–even the cute li’l shaggy wiener dog–so long as it wasn’t the frackin’ Pekingese.
Sigh. I think it was an overreaction to last year’s wonderful and gigantic Scottish deerhound, a payoff to the tiny dog crew.

Damn. RIP, Kid.
Gary Carter is half of the answer to one of the all-time great trivial questions: can you name a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and a member of the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame who graduated from the same high school?

I thought the Staffordshire Bull Terrier should have beaten the Kerry Blue for the group. That is one bad-ass looking dawg.

The prosecution in the George Huguely trial rested this morning. Looks like the defense isn’t contesting that he killed her, but are playing to get involuntary manslaughter instead of murder (the “I was so shit-faced I didn’t realize I was killing her” defense).

@burnspbesq:
Robert Durst’s lawyers managed to convince a jury that he was innocent of murder despite the fact that he dismembered the victim’s body and dumped it in Galveston Bay, so you never know what harebrained decision a jury will come up with.

This only shows that the civilian justice system is inadequate to deal with evil mooslum terrists, and that all the pants-wetters were right to object to closing Gitmo and trying Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in civilian court.

@trollhattan:
I have a brother & SIL that raise & show dogs. They started with Dalmatians but didn’t have the room to do them justice and now work with Italian Grayhounds. I went to a lot of shows with them & saw a lot of dogs & way too much of dog show people. Dog shows are very political. It matters who you know, who your handler is (assuming you don’t show your own & at the Westminster level I doubt any do). Often times you could guess which dog was going to win based on who the judge was.

@trollhattan: As someone who was there – the boxer was robbed as was the scotty and the australian terriers. But then we were just looking on, and didn’t put our hands between their hind legs, so who were we to judge.

Well, you can both be right. The limit as the number of chins goes to infinity looks just like chinlessness.
@Chris:
Harry Truman tried and failed twice to get universal health insurance past Southern Democrats who objected that it would apply to members of an inferior race, and somehow he was the Nazi sympathizer?
