Some more great news regarding Minna- she has been moved out of the icu and her speech is getting better but her throat still sore from intubation.
Such good news.

Like many of you, I have been thinking of asiangrrlMN (aka Minna) since John’s post went up yesterday.
I just checked Caring Bridge, and I see that they took Minna for the MRI at 5:30, so her family should know more soon. I think that was 5:30 central time. asiangrrlMN was always a light here on Balloon Juice, and though I don’t tweet or do Facebook, it’s pretty clear that it’s true everywhere she goes.
Let’s send some light her way.

Ian Boudreau has passed along the horrific news that long time commenter Minna Hong, aka asiangrrl, had a serious heart attack the other day and is currently in the hospital and has not woken up. That is all I know, but there is a Caring Bridge link where you can sign up for updates.
Just devastating news that I don’t even want to process right now, and I am just hoping for the best.

Seems like a good morning to share this. Postcards don’t have to be political, after all:
Dear Amy: I suppose this is a minor matter, but I’ve lost touch with some very close friends during the pandemic. Honestly, I was just feeling down (fortunately, not sick). I wouldn’t describe it as depression but more as just not having any energy.
I’m feeling much better now, but I’m a little unsure about how to pick up the pieces of these friendships.
Any suggestions?

Distant: I believe that your situation is probably extremely common, as many of us seem to have been in a state of torpor.
I prescribe … postcards!
Write out a sincere message. Here’s a start: “Dear Friend, I’m sending this postcard from my couch, where I seem to have spent the past year or so. I am so sorry that I seem to have fallen off the edge of the world, but I am emerging now. I hope you will forgive me for not being in touch, and I am crossing my fingers that you’ll still take my calls, so we can resume where we left off.
I’ve thought of you so often and truly “wish you were here!”

Say I told you so without saying…
Last night, the Supreme Court officially overturned five decades of settled law and permitted Texas' unconstitutional abortion ban to stand.
Yes: They gutted Roe v. Wade without hearing arguments, in a one-paragraph, unsigned 5-4 opinion issued in the middle of the night.

Tropical Depression 9 is getting itself organized near Jamaica. Right now, all projections have it making landfall somewhere between central Louisiana and Mississippi by either Sunday or Monday.
18z models are tightly clustered on a track into south-central Louisiana, with a landfall Sunday into Monday.
This would put NOLA, BR, and Lafayette at the greatest risk for hurricane impacts. Now is the time to put your hurricane plan into action.#TropicalUpdate #TD9 #Ida? pic.twitter.com/MynnAlqwUz

The meteorologists are very worried that the storm track takes the depression over the Gulf Loop Current which has bath-tub warm (90 F or greater) water to the depth of 100+ feet. This is a tremendous amount of hot water and thus energy that could potentially allow for the storm to intensify very quickly into a major hurricane.
Since this storm is a fast mover, normal emergency prep times are being compressed.
Know what your plan is and make revocable steps to activate your major hurricane courses of action soon.
