Trump’s political forte has been to make blatant every rotten, vicious, underhanded Everybody does it Republican tactic. But his ongoing conspiracy with Netanyahu to keep each other in power and out of jail has gone beyond national embarrassment into global terrorism. The latest social-media uproar seems to have been sparked by a Some people say moment on PBS last night:

It's enough of a safe bet that Trump and other major GOP figures are actively sabotaging American diplomats seeking a hostage release that it should be treated as certainty. https://t.co/BPD9cIGwvk

all we have to go on is Nixon committing treason in 1968, the now-proven 1980 October Surprise conspiracy, Iran-Contra, Trump openly hoping the economy crashes, and Trump's own extensive history of telling foreign leaders to do his bidding against Biden and other Democrats.

The Logan Act was one of Jefferson’s worst ideas (which is why it’s never been used successfully in the ensuing 225 years), but there has to be some way of discouraging two-party gangsterism like this…

Just to tweak the melting orange circus peanut they are filling Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee:
Holy cow. This is the line in Milwaukee, Wisconsin right now to see Kamala Harris & Tim Walz. People waiting 3.5 hours in line &, remember, this is DURING the DNC. This is so amazing. pic.twitter.com/73E5awuO3U

They will be beaming the Milwaukee rally into the DNC rally and probably vice versa. Going to be quite a night.
Here’s the DNC feed:
And here is C-Span covering the opening speeches and music right now:
I’m sure there will be more convention posts, but I didn’t want you to miss the Milwaukee trolling.

In Michigan, people who are in jail, awaiting trial, are eligible to vote. But many or most of them them don’t know it.
These are people who haven’t been convicted of anything, but can’t afford $5,000 or whatever for bail. (Don’t get me started on how wrong that is!)
VAAC wants to send postcards to 1,200 people who are in jails in Michigan, awaiting trial, letting them know they can vote and sharing information about the process.
HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
If you commit to doing 100 postcards or more, they will send you everything you need in a box!
All you have to do is:
add the labels and the stamps to the postcards
write a 10-word message to them in your own handwriting
mail the postcards or ship your completed box back (still checking on that detail)
They need postcards for 1,200 folks who are in jail. That would be 12 people who can do 100 postcards, or fewer people doing more cards.
Update:
We have 12 sets of 100 postcards available.
If you are one of the 12 people,, VAAC will ship your “postcards in a box” box next week, so you should have them in 7-10 days or so, depending on the mail.
Rules of the road:
So it seems like you’ll have about 2 weeks to write your postcards once the box arrives.
Please send me your name and mailing addresses by email, so they can send your box!
And send your nym so I can match the emails I get with nyms from this thread.
Update: The original 12 slots for 100 postcards all have been filled. Thank you!

Everything I’ve observed and read about Gwen Walz so far tells me she’s an empathetic, courageous person who has changed the lives of countless students. She may also quietly be as funny as her spouse.
Anecdote I read recently: Gwen Walz’s surname before marriage was Whipple. She considered going by a hyphenated last name — Whipple-Walz — but decided it “sounded too much like a bird call.”
Did I mention she was an English teacher? I already love her and hope we’ll have eight years to get to know her better.

In his latest “fact check”, Glenn Kessler shits the bed and rolls around in it. [gift link] One of the lowlights:
“We know from his own chief of staff, four-star General John Kelly, that Trump while in Europe would not go to the gravesites in France of the brave service members who gave their lives in this country, he called them ‘suckers and losers.’ ”
—Biden
Kelly did not exactly say this. Trump, on repeated occasions, had vehemently denied this story. In 2023, however, John F. Kelly, Trump’s White House chief of staff in 2018 — who had previously not commented on the controversy — issued a statement to CNN that Trump “rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France.”
Note that Kelly’s statement is carefully worded and does not directly say Trump refused to visit the graves because he thought they were losers, as Biden claimed. He says Trump thinks war dead are losers and he did not want to go to the cemetery. Both could be true — but not connected.
Trump fucked a porn star, then paid her money to sign an NDA. Both could be true — but not connected.
I ate Taco Bell for lunch and then had explosive diarrhea. Both could be true — but not connected.
Here are things that we thought we knew, but Glenn’s not so sure: Trump said “fine people on both sides” about the Charlottesville riot — Glenn accepts Trump’s distinction between the neo-nazis in the march and the fine people who were also carrying torches in the neo-nazi march. Trump suggested injecting bleach to combat COVID — ackshully, Glenn says, Trump mentioned an “injection inside” the lungs with a disinfectant. Totally different! And there were no “love letters” to Kim Jong Un from Trump — Glenn says there’s “no evidence” (here’s evidence) and that Trump’s comment about “falling in love” was “puffery”. I guess we excuse Trump for “puffery” but god damn any Democrat who puts a little spin in their convention speeches.
What kind of a broken brain do you need to file this piece? Who is the audience? What greater good is it serving? What value are you providing subscibers?
When journalists whine about the death of journalism, they’re often talking about a self-inflicted wound.
(Note that I didn’t even consider whatever the Times wrote, but Atrios has one terrible example.)

Report from the Chicago Sun-Times:
It took awhile to get there, and it looks like it required skipping an appearance by James Taylor, but President Joe Biden finally got to the United Center stage on what was supposed to be his night at the Democratic National Convention.
It was nearly 10:30 p.m. by the time he was introduced to the crowd by his daughter Ashley. He gave her a long, long hug, then dabbed at his eyes, and slowly faced the crowd…
Harris joined him on stage after his speech — her second appearance after she surprised delegates with an early appearance with a video introduction featuring “Freedom” by Beyoncé.
Harris, who was not on the list of featured speakers, offered a few brief remarks, and thanked Biden for his “remarkable leadership” and exhorted the delegates to continue the fight.
Hillary Clinton gave a rousing speech of her own, touching repeatedly on the theme of the glass ceiling she says Harris’ election would break. Clinton, former Secretary of State and wife of former President Bill Clinton, won the popular vote in the 2016 election against Donald Trump, but lost the electoral vote.
Before Harris went on stage, delegates paid tribute to Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Chicago civil rights leader and two-time presidential candidate.
Democrats also brought out Illinois Rep. Lauren Underwood, a registered nurse, to slam what she called Trump’s failed response to COVID as president…
Earlier, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson welcomed delegates “to the greatest city in world” in his brief remarks to the Democratic National Convention on Monday. Johnson praised Harris as “someone with the toughness to stand up for us.”
About an hour before things got underway in the United Center, dozens of people breached a security perimeter near the United Center around 5 p.m., prompting a tense standoff with police. But the situation was quickly resolved with only four arrests.
“The future is here,” Hillary Clinton says after touching on her 2016 loss and the 66 million votes she won toward becoming the first female president. “I wish my mother and Kamala’s mother could see us. They would say keep going.” pic.twitter.com/E02bLrp3eG
