Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When we show up, we win.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

He really is that stupid.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

An almost top 10,000 blog!

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

When I was faster i was always behind.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Second rate reporter says what?

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Another Update on History’s Greatest Monster

by John Cole|  August 6, 20104:20 pm| 59 Comments

Erik’s pointed to a couple reasons to appreciate Carter’s impact, but what amazes me is how much he has done around the world to make life better for people you and I normally would never even think about. Just the other day, there was this wonderful story on PRI about how the Carter Center is trying to educate Liberians and help form a justice system.

And it is like that almost everywhere on the planet- places you and I never think of, if there is suffering going on, there is a good chance that Jimmy Carter’s outfit has been there working to try to end their misery. We just talked about Carter and the effort to end the scourge of Guinea worm infestation.

It is amazing to me how much Republicans love to hate Carter- it just makes no sense to me. Even if you consider his administration to be a total failure, what the man has done the last thirty years makes him one of the greatest Americans dead or alive.

First, They Came for the Squeaky Curds, and I Didn’t Speak Up

by John Cole|  August 6, 20103:36 am| 52 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Another successful night out on the town in the People’s Republic of Madison, where my revelry was not only not impeded, but enhanced by the actions of union janitors and cab drivers. Apparently the people of the PRM are so sated by good beer, great music, fatty foods, and the young legs of nubile Badger co-eds that they fail to recognize the leftist oppression that dominates their daily lives. One of these days, they will look at the clean streets, the bicycle lanes, the ample sidewalks, the busty young blonde women who say “OTE” instead of “out,” the plentiful park benches and wide variety of vendor food, and realize that they are living in a modern hellhole.

Until then, I’m going to keep enjoying this place and their odd customs, which include being polite, helpful, and courteous to strangers and engaging in light yet friendly conversation with said strangers.

Like I said, these Wisconsin fuckers are weird. I have a presentation to attend in a few hours (6!), so wish me luck.

Also, too, the Onion started in Madison. I count that as a win.

Is a mighty, mighty fine beer.

Also, you people in Wisconsin are like Canadian lite. Pathologically polite. My friends from New York would break out in hives.

Elizabeth Warren Is (Still) Not Shrill

by Kay|  August 5, 20108:56 pm| 42 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Free Markets Solve Everything, Open Threads

Before Elizabeth Warren was a potential nominee to run the new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, she once wore a lesser-known hat: blogger. The Harvard Law School professor was one of the founding writers of CreditSlips, a blog that’s “a discussion on credit, finance and bankruptcy.” Her posts ended shortly after she headed to Washington in the fall of 2008 to head the Congressional Oversight Panel, monitoring TARP. Law and bankruptcy scholars, as well as lay consumer finance junkies make up the blog’s core audience, which serves as a digital water cooler for Warren and her colleagues.

The contributors lean decidedly pro-consumer, which is refreshing. They somehow missed the national directive that said every advocate has a duty to make the other side’s argument. They must believe (sensibly) that lenders have millions of dollars in advertising and an army of lobbyists to “tell their side of the story”.

Wie Geht Es Ihnen?

This post is in: Beer Blogging, Open Threads

In honor of International Beer Day, I went to the Essen Haus and had a couple Franziskaner Dunkelweizen, and they were delicious. Also had an order of cheese curds (was unimpressed and was told they were not very good there) and jaegerschnitzel (which I really enjoyed- the accompanying red cabbage was delicious, I passed on the spaetzle). Not earthshattering high cuisine, but I enjoyed it, and the beers were perfectly poured. I know a lot of you said to go to the Old Fashioned and several other places, but there were just too many people at those joints. This place was more my speed- I move to my own beat and really try to avoid crowded places when at all possible.

Speaking of German beer, Erik had an interesting post about Carter and micro-breweries, and somewhere in between beer number one and two, I wondered how Erik and conservatives/libertarians felt about laws like the rheinheitsgebot. I know it has since been lifted, but did that really have a deleterious effect on beer production and variety in Germany?

In other news, the dogs are fine. I know this, because I’ve called a dozen times or more. Lily is still afraid of the house sitter, but Rosie is no longer snarling at him, so that is a positive plus.

Not sure what kind of debauchery I am going to get into. Maybe I will have a couple more drinks and then settle in for a wild night of searching the Sears catalog…
