Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

This fight is for everything.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The Silence of the Dandelions

Day two of the anti-dandelion counter-insurgency at the Cole household has ended with me sunburnt, exhausted, and with only half the yard done. I put down 12 bags of mulch and got the second herb planter done, hung some wind chimes, and mowed and de-dandelioned half the yard before the shoulder started to ache. I’ll finish the rest tomorrow. I’ve also decided that I need a compost heap.

Also, still no songbirds, but with me outside raising a stink, cackling while throwing dandelion carcasses all over the place, I can’t say I blame them. Some of you wanted to know what kind of feed I picked up, and i looked at the bag and it was Kaytee Ultimate Songbird. Having run a blog for a decade, I am fully aware that this is when you all are supposed to leave 100 comments about why my choice in birdseed sucks/is bad for birds/hazardous to other animals/bad for the environment/all of the above.

I’ll be back in approximately 1/2 bottle of wine to fight back.

Greatest Tool Ever

Done with the work-work and now am going to spend the afternoon venting my authoritarian impulses on the yard. I figure politicians don’t listen to me, you all don’t listen to me, my friends and family don’t listen to me, my animals, whose continued existence relies upon my generosity and good will, don’t listen to me and actually actively defy me at every opportunity, so all I have left is my yard, and I am going to go impose my will on it for the better part of the afternoon.

Not to mention I am now heavily armed with this implement of destuction:

How awesome is that! You won’t even hear the dandelions scream, it will be that quick.

No birds at the bird feeder. I’m assuming this is just because they do not know the seed is there yet.

On the other hand, they could have been intimidated by the fat man, the fat cat, and the barky dog holding vigil on the other side of the window. No one ever said birds are THAT dumb.

Open Thread: Thursday Night Menu

From Bad Horse’s Filly:

Had a little trouble deciding what to post tonight. We’ve been pretty busy at work and we are all a bit tired, when I asked the guys what I should post, ordering pizza instead of cooking won out. I pulled three different menus before I decided on a little taste of Sanibel Island. I like the fresh flavors in this menu and I really enjoy tuna and swordfish. The Butter Pecan Turtle Bars are as decadent as they sound, and a breeze to make. You’ll see the Chunky Vegetable Soup recipe later this week and next Thursday I’ll post the other menu I pulled (you’ll just have to wait and see what that is). We had the most amazing rain shower last night; it was like the skies just opened up and poured water from a bucket for about ½ hour. The rest of the night was a steady rain with thunder and lightning, great sleeping weather. Spring has definitely arrived and recipes will begin to reflect that. JeffreyW is further south than I am, so his photos have made me long for warm weather and green things. If you haven’t seen his wonderful slideshows, check them out when you have time.

On the board tonight:

2. Black Bean Tropical Salad

3. Butter Pecan Turtle Bars

As ever, recipes and shopping list at the link.

Last one was getting clogged with all sorts of suggestions.

I forgot to mention, I finally broke down and picked up one of those topsy turvy tomato growers. We’ll see how that works out.

Apparently I was targeted this week by the global dandelion jihad, and they successfully ran attacks all over my property without my noticing. I’ve been running clear and hold missions for the last hour or so, but I may have to venture into my neighbors yard, because I can tell the dandelion jiahd is being given safe harbor there.

At any rate, is there any way to handle this between the two obvious solutions: digging every damned one of them up or spraying poison all over the damned place? I don’t like either option.

Also, got Tunch’s bird feeder set up. Waiting for the birds to notice it.
