Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

T R E 4 5 O N

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Mark Levin makes a courageous break from the President:

take from Mark Steyn and Jonah Goldberg’s comments that conservatives have been tolerant of President Bush for a long time, given his embrace of big-government from the start. And they have. But I don’t think the issue is that conservatives are generally surprised that the president is a big-government Republican. I just think they’ve had enough of it. In return for their support, the GOP no longer controls Congress and is adrift.

***

However, many conservatives believe an intervention is necessary now or in 2008 the Democrats may well retain Congress and pick up the presidency. President Bush is the leader of the party, in charge of the RNC, and for the most part sets the national agenda. And apart from the war (although there’s a growing voice of dissent in that regard) much of the national agenda is seen as misplaced (amnesty) and reactive (global warming).

A real profile in courage- waiting until Bush is at 26% with a few months left in his election to call him out. Bravo, Mark. I am not sure what is more depressing, the fact that it took these “intellectuals” until now to realize what a failure this administration has been, or that what really appears to be motivating him is the possibility of a Democratic President in 2008. I guess I shouldn’t be too smug- it took me until 2004-2005 to realize the smelly dirty hippies were right all along.

Much more here.

Shock And Awe

by John Cole|  June 3, 200712:04 pm| 42 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

The terrorists have responded from our earlier defensive actions, and the results are terrifying. With that last salvo, it is clear that complete and total war has been declared, and we must attack with all of our might with this weapon provided by one of our patriotic citizens:

What better way to send a message to the terrorists than this display of unity and resolve that demonstrates our total committment to all that is good?

In addition to our actions against those who have attacked our homeland, my advisors and I have decided that in order to make sure this sort of cowardly attack never happens again on our soil, we must wage pre-emptive war on a second front against the vicious scum at the Poorman Institute. The facts are clear:

1.) They have weapons of mass distruction and frequently use them on their own population.
2.) They have displayed a willingness to terrorize, and have known and established links with the folks at Sadly, No!.
3.) They have attacked us in the past, and will do so again if left to their own devices.
4.) The CIA has informed me that they are, at this very moment, working towards weapons of even greater power.

The evidence that they are an imminent threat is clear and unambiguous. Containment has failed, and as the decider, I have decided that I must wage pre-emptive war. These are troubling times, and I hope that you pray for our troops as we enter this difficult second phase. I have been assured that we will be greeted as liberators once the leadership at the Poorman is defeated.

As we speak, I am assembling a coalition of the willing. I have reached out to the Brits and the Russians, who, in addition to being long time allies, have proven that they are capable of waging this type of warfare. The French refuse to return our phone calls.

By now you have surveyed the evidence we have assembled, and surely you understand why Shock and Awe is necessary:

I hope you understand why I must take these drastic steps. And remember, they hate us for our freedoms.

Our CEO President

Kevin Drum recently wrote an insightful post about American businesses jumping on board with Democratic healthcare and climate initiatives:

Now, don’t get me wrong: even a little bit of movement is a good thing. And I don’t care much what their motivation is. But a lot of what’s happening here on the global warming front involves corporations trying to preempt tough state regulations with weaker federal rules — not exactly a sign of getting on the liberal bandwagon. Likewise, although some CEOs are genuinely concerned about skyrocketing healthcare costs, for the most part they seem to be simply adapting to the new sheriff in town. That “seat at the table” they’re asking for isn’t because they all took vacations in Stockholm this winter and came away true believers in universal healthcare. It’s because they want to make sure that if something is going to happen, it’ll be as little as possible.

Indeed, people don’t always join a movement out of enthusiasm for its causes. Sometimes they join so that they can have a say in something they hate but cannot prevent. No doubt that is where out CEO president learned his moves.

Accused of dragging his feet on global warming, President Bush on Thursday proposed that by 2008 the countries that emit the most greenhouse gases come up with long-term goals to curb emissions.

Critics dismissed the strategy as a diversion and a delaying tactic, but some European leaders and a U.N official expressed hope that it might be a first step to more action.

“The United States takes this issue seriously,” Bush said in a speech. “The new initiative I’m outlining today will contribute to the important dialogue that will take place in Germany next week” — a reference to the Group of Eight industrial nations’ summit.

The Bush plan calls for voluntary emmissions targets. Surprise – this administration loves voluntary rules better than ice cream dipped in Alaska crude. After six years of this nonsense most of us have learned to see “voluntary rules” and read “…” A rule with no teeth is not a rule. The president stood up, made a bunch of noise and proposed nothing at all.

Condi: Cheney Channeling Kucinich

Methinks SoS Rice just discovered an amusing loophole.

Rice Insists Cheney Supports Diplomacy for Iran

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday that Vice President Cheney fully supports a diplomatic course over Iran’s nuclear program, denying impressions of divisions among President Bush’s foreign-policy advisers.

“The president of the United States has made very clear what our policy is. That policy is supported by all of the members of his cabinet — and by the vice president of the United States,” Rice said at a news conference here after talks with Spanish officials.

The veep supports engaging with Iran? Baloney. Sensible people including and especially Condoleeza Rice recognize that the vice president views talking with Iran as one step removed from giving Osama Bin Laden a cabinet post. But we also know that Cheney will speak to the press when pigs fly. Hmm.

This Is War

The Hon. Dr. St. Rev. Bradley S. Rocket, Esq, PhD, MD declares war with an outrageous assault on common decency and taste.

This kind of crime against humanity can not be treated lightly, and must be met with an equal display of force:

Further aggression from the insurgents at Sadly, No! will be met with additional measures. If need be, I will commission this fellow to do a remake of Abba’s Dancing Queen. As you can see, I am not afraid of total war, and will go all Vanilla Ice on you.

Here is further proof of my dedication to the cause:

By now, you understand how serious I am.

*** Update ***

The terrorists are scared, and issue threats in our very own comments section:

You don’t want to go here, John. Just trust me. No wanna go :-)

I fear they underestimate my resolve.

Dr. Death Is On The Prowl

And I don’t mean Karl Rove:

Pathologist, angel of mercy, advocate, lightning rod, scofflaw, punchline — to Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s long resume of sobriquets we may now add ex-con.

After serving 8 years of a 10-to-25-year sentence for second-degree murder, the doctor walked out of the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, Mich., and into the predictable media frenzy. He had only a few offhand, characteristically vinegary remarks for the legions of reporters and camera crews on the scene, but there will be all manner of TV appearances and news conferences in the days and weeks to come, one may be sure.

Seventy-nine and not in the best of health himself, Dr. Kevorkian returns on parole to a society that still hasn’t figured out what to do about one of the great unintended consequences of modern science: The growing number of people with profound illnesses whose death can be staved off indefinitely but whose suffering and misery, physical or psychic or both, cannot be meaningfully relieved.

I used to have very strong feelings about this- I was an unflinching supporter of the notion that we should be able to make our own decisions about our destiny, but firmly against people behaving in an illegal manner. In other words, I agreed with what he was doing in the generic sense, but did not approve of the means.

I need to think about this for a while and see if I still believe the same things. I am sure the culture of life nitwits in the blogosphere will have a great deal to say in between breathless posts supporting the death penalty and the necessity of torture, and their opinions will probably influence me, although not in the way they hope or intend. Only one aspect of this debate is simple for me- life is more than a pulse.

“Conservatives were cool with the lying, the incompetence, the spending, the failed war, the expanded government, the assault on civil liberties, and the broken promises, but, man are we pissed about the immigration bill!”

Not to stroke my own ego, but I predicted this.
