Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

The revolution will be supervised.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Come on, man.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

And In the Meantime

by John Cole|  April 12, 20088:35 am| 36 Comments

This post is in: War, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

While everyone is distracted with other things, the administration is dusting off the Office of Special Plans and gearing up for war with Iran:

Last week’s violence in Basra and Baghdad has convinced the Bush administration that actions by Iran, and not al-Qaeda, are the primary threat inside Iraq, and has sparked a broad reassessment of policy in the region, according to senior U.S. officials.

Evidence of an increase in Iranian weapons, training and direction for the Shiite militias that battled U.S. and Iraqi security forces in those two cities has fixed new U.S. attention on what Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates yesterday called Tehran’s “malign” influence, the officials said.

I think I speak for everyone when I say I am really looking forward to this next phase in the permanent war in the middle east. I hear if we bomb Iran, we will be greeted as liberators.

The “F–k You, Hillary” Saturday Open Thread

Hillary Clinton, disgrace:

Hillary Clinton and her asshole supporters are now perfectly aligned with the Powerline, and Jeffrey Toobin is right- Hillary Clinton is an embarrassment, and I simply can not face the prospect of four or eight years of her syrupy, two-face, condescending, smarmy bullshit.

The Dog Starvation Exhibit

by Michael D.|  April 12, 20085:50 am| 30 Comments

This post is in: Dog Blogging

Here’s how it went:

  1. Artist ties a dog to a tether on one corner of a room in a museum
  2. Artist places bowl of food just out of reach in other corner
  3. Over a period of days, dog dies of starvation.

I first read about this here, and I was livid; however, it turns out that what people believed was happening was not happening at all. In fact, the dog was well cared for, and was fed daily. The point of the exhibit was that the artist…

… intended the work to be a stunt to show how a starving dog suddenly becomes the centre of attention when it is in a gallery, but not when it is on the street. The work was intended to expose people for what they really are – “hyprocritical sheep”. He said that in order for the work to be valid, he and the gallery had to give the impression that the dog was genuinely starving to death and that it died.

In retrospect, he certainly did prove his point, didn’t he? There are two million signatures on the petition and nearly 73,000 members on the Starving Dogs is not art Facebook Group.

Clever, in a morbid kind of way.

Screw Hillary

by John Cole|  April 11, 20086:23 pm| 229 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

Just saw her on Hardball calling Obama an elitist by latching on to some out of context quote from a fund-raising meeting.

Screw Hillary. Screw her rabid and increasingly delusional supporters. Screw the people who will claim it is all good in politics. Screw the pro-Hillary bloggers who will claim I just have CDS for stating this. Fuck all of ’em, and go join the GOP if you want to campaign like Karl Rove and think it is all good. If Hillary, her campign, and her supporters want to act like the wingnut bloggers, I will react like I do when dealing with them. Go fuck yourself.

How about them apples?

*** Update ***

A more nuanced take. Me, I still say fuck ’em.

*** Update #2 ***

The inevitable comment from the pro-Hillary trolls:

Aw, John, and you had a couple days of CDS sobriety going.

Tommorrow is a new day. When you wake up, promise yourself “I won’t hate Hillary today.”

Progress, not perfection is the goal.

Hillary supporters really need to understand the nature of causal relationships. The reason I didn’t say anything about Hillary for a few days is not because my alleged “CDS” was waning, but because Hillary wasn’t acting like an asshole and nothing assholish (did I just make up a word?) came from her campaign.

This really is not rocket science. In the past, a prominent left-wing blogger called me the “Wanker of the Day.” The thing to do if that upsets you is not to tell him he has “Cole Derangement Syndrome,” but to stop ACTING LIKE A FUCKING WANKER.

This is solid advice for Hillary and her supporters that I am offering here. I hope they take it.

More Bush Justice

by John Cole|  April 11, 20081:56 pm| 78 Comments

This post is in: Politics, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

For those of you unfamiliar with the case of Cyril Wecht in Pittsburgh, the Carpetbbager has the background. Short version, a prominent Democrat was accused of improperly using a public fax machine for personal gain to the toon of a grand or so, and this was worth a $400,000 dollar investigation and trial then ended up in a hung jury.

I know, that is all bizarre in and of itself, but this is the Bush Justice Department, so who knows what the hell is really going on. At any rate, today we learn of a new development:

Two jurors said Thursday they were unnerved by FBI requests for home visits to explain why they deadlocked in the federal public corruption trial of former Allegheny County coroner Cyril H. Wecht.

Experts said the practice of using FBI agents to contact and interview jurors in their homes after mistrials was unusual, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pittsburgh characterized it as “commonplace.”

“I thought it was kind of intimidating,” the jury foreman said about the FBI phone call.

Said another juror, “I found it kind of unusual.”

Now, just because I have never heard of this sort of thing does not mean it is not commonplace. This may be quite normal for the FBI to come to your house to ask you why you decided a case one way or another, even if it is creepy and intimidating. Or, maybe not:

Wecht defense attorney Jerry McDevitt declined to say whether the defense team spoke to jurors, but said the FBI’s contact with jurors troubled him.

“That’s the problem with their heavy-handed approach to this. Why would they need to talk to them now? They’ve already decided to retry him,” McDevitt said. “I think given the circumstances of this case, it’s coercive. It appears that way with these jurors.”

Westmoreland County defense attorney Tom Ceraso, who was not involved in the case, said in his decades of experience trying cases in federal court he has never heard of the FBI telephoning or interviewing jurors.

“If I’m a prospective juror in the second trial, and I’m hearing stories that if I don’t agree with the government that I might get calls from the FBI, that could have a very, very deleterious impact,” Ceraso said. “I would think that’s very bothersome to have that happen.”

Chime in if you have any information on this.

But Will DOMA STOP THIS?

DOMA may have saved us all from having the state and activist judges imposing gay marriage on all of us, but can it stop THIS?

Consider this a wide open and often breezy thread.

Obama’s Secret ’08 Platform- Court Ordered Reacharounds

by John Cole|  April 11, 20089:10 am| 69 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity, I Read These Morons So You Don't Have To

Via Sadly, No!, this gem from John Hawkins:

In 2004, you said that you opposed the Defense of Marriage Act, which is designed to keep gay marriage from being imposed on the country by judicial fiat.

Thank GOD for DOMA, or I might have had a gay marriage imposed on me by activist judges, and I just hate having gay anal sex.
