Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

When we show up, we win.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Let there be snark.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Stand up, dammit!

Not all heroes wear capes.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

NY Up for Grabs?

by Tom in Texas|  April 10, 20081:20 pm| 62 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Politics

A new Marist poll has McCain/Rice beating any combination of Clinton/Obama. In New York. I don’t trust the results of this holding up in November, nor do I think there is the slightest chance the GOP will put Rice on the ticket. I think Rice is far too close to Bush, and the Republicans will want to make a clean break with the Bush administration, especially her signature failure of managing Iraq prior to McCain’s surge strategy. He will do all he can to paint Iraq as a strategic failure led by Republicans that ignored his advice early on. That narrative disappears if Rice is by his side while he makes it.

On top of that, putting Rice on the GOP ticket might actually cause the Solid South vote to waver. Condi and McCain do nothing to reassure the arch conservatives who want to shut down the border and remove affirmative action. I also think putting a single black female on the ticket will push a few voters who can’t stand at least one of those categories away from the ticket.

What Is Going on With American

by John Cole|  April 10, 200811:48 am| 51 Comments

I have not been following along, but what is the deal with American Airlines? And how long before there is a bailout?

*** Update ***

Almost as soon as I hit publish, it occurred to me that my poorly written and short post has opened me up to all sorts of jackassery in the comments. I understand they are grounded for maintenance problems, but was wondering if there was any backstory- how long has this been going on, is it something that until recently was overlooked, etc.

Again, I am burnt out. Sorry, just not feeling the juices the past two days. If I were going to write about anything, it would probably be this Rick Moran piece in which he asserts that torture is wrong but the left is worse (especially those damned Europeans!), but I just don’t feel like picking on someone on the right who can at least acknowledge torture is wrong. That in and of itself is such a rare and delicate flower that I don’t want to kill it in the process of weeding, and Rick has consistently opposed torture, so he gets a pass even though he just can’t pull the trigger and figure out that the torture party is, in fact, worse than “the left.”

At least I am not doing this.

China, Torch Relays, Human Rights, etc

by Michael D.|  April 9, 20087:44 pm| 88 Comments

This post is in: Politics

I feel conflicted. There is absolutely no question that the United Staes is infinitely better than China when it comes to human rights. I don’t think anyone can argue against that.

Still, when I see people protesting the torch relay because of the treatment of Tibet by China, I can’t help but think of the human rights violations commited by this administration. Like it or not (and I hope it’s “not”), the official policy of the United States is to violate human rights when it sees fit. Yes, the majority of the citizens of this country are disgusted by it, but it IS official policy.

So, when I see the protesters, I support them. But at the same time, while I know we’re better, I feel like there are people in other places looking at the United States and saying to themselves, “Who are they to protest against human rights violations?”

I would love to see the politics kept out of the Olympics. It does nothing but hurt the athletes. Also, I am anxiously anticipating China’s response when the first person goes into Tiananmen Square and unfurls a Tibetan flag. The Olympics will be good for the Chinese people, I think. The event will put China in the spotlight – for better and for worse. Personally, I believe the Chinese government didn’t quite understand what they were getting themselves into. I don’t have high hopes that the Olympics will change China for the better, but I also don’t think it’s going to be a bad thing.

Breaking – Petraeus Will Not Magically Pull Fresh Troops Out Of His Ass

by Tim F|  April 9, 20082:06 pm| 67 Comments

Phew.

Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, testifying on Capitol Hill for a second day on the situation in Iraq, today dismissed the idea of calling for another buildup of U.S. forces in the country if violence escalates, saying he would rely instead on American and Iraqi forces already there.

It’s a tough call, considering that “calling” for another troop buildup is like me calling for a Megatherium pizza.

Every time my internet goes out, which is something that is happening more and more often, and I call your 1-800-COMCAST helpline and select that I am having trouble with my internet and am then told by the automated voice to seek help at http://comcast.net if I do not want to hold for an operator, I die a little on the inside.

Please make that stop.
