Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

He really is that stupid.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Bark louder, little dog.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

This really is a full service blog.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

A consequence of cucumbers

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Lindsey Graham (R-Smelling Salts): It’s hard out there for a white southerner

::cue tiny violins::

The story that Alex Haley wouldn’t want you to know about:

GOP presidential candidate Gov. Rick Perry (TX) has faced severe backlash this week as the result of stories that he had opposed a campaign to remove the Confederate battle flag from statehouses across the South and that he had hosted family and friends at a West Texas hunting camp that once read “Niggerhead” on its entrance gate. Yesterday on Mike Gallagher’s radio show, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) defended Perry. “Rick Perry is not a racist,” Graham said, saying the Texas governor is the victim of an “intimidation” campaign. “You know if you’re a southern white guy, it is part of your life,” Graham complained. Rush says the Occupy folks are Obama’s foot soldiers. Bet that’s news to him:

Rush Limbaugh contends that President Barack Obama is “setting up riots” through the Occupy Wall Street protests that are spreading across the country.
    …
“There’s no doubt in my mind that the White House is behind this,” he said. “Obama is setting up riots. He is fanning the flames.”
    …
The “anarchists” and “union thugs” who are rallying against corporate greed are Obama’s constituents, Limbaugh said.
“Occupy Wall Street is his base,” he said. “Those are his foot soldiers.

I could at least understand the argument (not that I would buy it, but I’d at least understand it) if we were talking about the 1950s here. But we’re not.

I remember all those stories about the “New South” that had put racism behind it, and these were in the 1970s. So when a white male Southerner wants to tell me how tough it was to not take racist stands in the 1980s and 1990s, I’m thinking that by this point, you had a choice by any standard you care to name. If you opposed the flying of the Confederate battle flag, there were other whites taking that side; you wouldn’t be alone.

And if you were a grownup and were still using ‘nigger’ in any context by then, well, up yours. Nobody made you do that. Even if other people around you were still using it, you had the coward’s choice of letting it slide by, but not using the word yourself.

So a hearty F-U to both Rick Perry and Lindsey Graham. Worthless pieces of shit.

I’m a little tired of people of one breeding group deciding that other members of their group aren’t racist. Especially when it’s members of the historically dominant group coming to these conclusions.

There’s a family down the road from me that flies the old GA flag with the “stars and bars” constantly. Since forever. I guess when the flag was changed they bought out a supply of them because if the current one gets worn they replace it.

I am from Alabama. White. Two brothers. Both turned totally to the dark side of the GOP and conservative fantasy land.

If I point out any of their racist drivel to them, they literally EXPLODE in anger, and accuse ME of being a racist for even suggesting such a thing. I mean, I am talking spittle flying anger.

When I blasted one of them by replying to the entire cc: list of relatives and friends when he included the classic ObamaCare image with Obama as African tribesman with a bone in his nose and grass skirt and shield, he blacklisted my email address and refused to speak to me for nearly a year. I finally called and made up, just because he is family (and my wife made me do it).

But he still does not get it.

The other brother was so incredibly vociferous back before the invasion of Iraq about all those WMDs, etc, etc, ignoring every fact I brought up and smirking at me as he explained how wrong and uninformed I was. Strangely he does not bring that topic up anymore. But he will get furious if I suggest that Blacks are disproportionately visited with prison and the death sentence. He will go into a paroxysm of anger and deny any and every fact and statistic, including all the overturned convictions of the past decade due to DNA and proof of misdeeds by prosecutors.

And don’t even get me started on the relatives who are fundamentalists, constantly trying to save our souls before the coming apocalypse. The ignorance and misinformation, most from Fox News, is so deep I have given up any and all hope of ever cutting through it. I just keep quiet and let them deal with their imaginary friend, denial of global warming, and belief that Obama is Hitler.

We have not driven the 500 miles to visit family in Alabama in several years, and are way over due for a visit.

I wish I could say I was excited about the prospect.

    I am not.

“You know if you’re a southern white guy, it is part of your life,”

I grew up in the south, and attended h.s. in a school that had just been integrated by the courts. I learned yes ma’am and no, sir, please and thank you and y’all, and what makes a good country fried steak and collard greens and fried okra, yada yada yada.

But, no, it wasn’t “just part of (my) life.” I knew racists – hell, I lived in the same house with some. But I never went camping at a place called N—–head, and I never wore any of that confederate battle flag bullshit, either.

It’s only “part of your life” if you choose for it to be by hanging out with dumbfuck racists.

I went to high school in the south, too. But I never understood why so many chose to embrace the most poisonous and unattractive parts of the “antebellum myth.”

-Those big plantation houses were supposedly full of history and literature. Yet they scorned learning and education.

-Glorification of the military and soldiering. Why then embrace bullying and cowardice?

-Above all, expected to be ladies and gentlemen. Which does not include cruelty to, and degradation of, others.

What did they like? I guess… the racism.

Having lived half my adult life in the south (AL/GA/FL), I’ve slowly learned not to tarnish all white southern men as racist yahoos. There are lots of really decent, non-racists throughout the South so its wrong to tar them all with this brush.
But, I have to be honest, it is a challenge at times to see beyond the Richard Shelbys and Paul Brauns of the region. The fact that they are not repudiated means that the moral weight of the regions is still heaviest on their side of the scale.
That and the crossed-fuckyous draped across the rear windows of the pickup trucks.

They showed some of the facebook comments of people who linked to the article – gold star for this one,

It’s really terrible, all the racist intimidation of Southern white males. No one else has suffered as they have. You just can’t imagine the indignity. From the moment 400 years ago when they were voluntarily came over in boats, to having to constantly defend their way of life and unique culture against the intolerant North, to not even being allowed the basic dignity of deciding how their public facilities were to be run, and now, the final and ultimate insult, actually having someone who doesn’t share their skin color as President of the United States. No one in all of human history has been oppressed like white Southern males.

Yeah. As a Southern White Guy (TM) there’s no way as a younger person I could have imagined that being associated with a place called N*****head was somehow over the line.

I mean, hey, c’mon, it’s hard to adjust — Brown V. Board of Education only happened in 2004, it’s not like there’s been time to adjust.

If white moderates are allowed to slowly advance race relations on a locally acceptable timescale, unlike desired by all the outside agitators and liberal Jews, we can make sure that both sides are equal, while properly remaining separate as our culture deems apt.

The SC tea party here has already made it very clear that he will be primaried next time he is up for re-election ./ at least one candidate is already announced.
