Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

In my day, never was longer.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Let’s finish the job.

This blog will pay for itself.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

We are never going to be rid of this corrput clan, but at least they’ve got some idea of their standing with normal Americans:

According to a book excerpted in Le Monde, Dubya told French President Nicolas Sarkozy he “believed that Obama would win because his twins swore by him.”

Apart from eugenic disasters (holidays are for FAMILY!), what’s on the agenda this evening?

I’ve always had a sense that the Bush twins are, considering the rotten stock they come from, better than they ought be.

If I hadn’t given up on the Sabbath Gasbaggers years ago, this would probably do it now. As Pierce points out, FoxNews has the least religiose panel of them all. I am perversely happy to the right-wing bishops waddling into the fray. As annoying as they are, they seem determined to force Romney to keep the culture wars stoked, which I don’t think is good for him through the summer.

Predators play the Colorado Avalanche. We’re watching it on TV. Thanks to Detroit’s loss this afternoon we know we have home ice advantage for the playoffs so this game isn’t quite as crucual. But still, it’s the final game of the season.

I’m talking hockey here, for you non-sports peeps.

    @efgoldman:

‘ I’m sorry for his family, but definitely no loss to the world of art. ‘

Yeah, a tragic early death. What kind of ‘natural causes’ produces death at 54 these days? I think that is reserved for people in their 80s and 90s now.

I’m not going to intentionally say anything mean about his art. There are many many worse things to do in this life than mass producing fantasy landscapes of geomorphically impossible and absurd bucolic scenes. They were pretty and some I have seen are amusing, almost Escher like in their impossible jumble of mutually inconsistent perspectives and frames of reference.

This bit from the NY Times article surprised me:

” Mr. Kinkade grew up in Placerville in Northern California and was raised in relative poverty by a single mother. He said that he was drawn to art at a young age. As a young man, according to The Associated Press, Mr. Kinkade traversed the country by boxcar with another artist, James Gurney, to sketch the American landscapes that they encountered. ”

Wow, Kincaid grew up a little NE of where I did. One would think some memory of real, possible, landscapes would have remained from his childhood, or travels around the country sketching.

Easter is pretty meaningless to me. Even as a lapsed Catholic/agnostic, I still like Christmas, with all the emphasis on giving and caritas and all that shit, but this death cult stuff really turns me off. I flipped through the IFC channel and saw that I had missed a run of Bill Maher’s Religulous (those cheeky monkeys!) and I remember the Jeebus theme park in FL where people applaud during the Passion pageant, when the actor comes out carrying the cross and covered in fake blood. It’s weird and creepy and wrong. For Christ’s sake.

I live in one of the states up next in the slouch towards Tampa and on my way home tonight who do I see who’s paid to put a billboard up? Yes, Ron Paul! Looks like Frothy and Sleazy aren’t the only dwarfs who don’t know when they’re no longer wanted. The curtain’s fallen, the lights have been turned up again, the band’s gone home, the liquor’s been locked back up, and the management’s calling the police to report a group of trespassers, but the last of the not-Mitts still won’t get off the stage. It’s almost as if by getting to know Willard personally they’ve come to loath him even more than the rest of us have.

Jeb picked as Lt. Gov. mate a guy who had made statements against Jews & Cubans !!!
Jeb tried to debate Lawton on TV & ended up with a deer in the headlights look again and again as Chiles took him apart.

@Jewish Steel: his paintings were frightfully twee and precious, and one senses somehow that those comically picturesque cottages and whatnots were slightly inhabited only by white people whose sources of income lay in sunnier climes IYKWIMAITYD. Kinda like a Norman Rockwellian Mansfield Park with way too many pinks and mauves.

But peposterously awful as were his paintings, as ludic as were his subject and as questionable his aesthetic, he did not deserve his umtimely demise. At least, not for known crimes against art.

Now, if you want to know what a real Painter Of Light would create, google “hockney ipad” and then go find an exhibit near you. It would be worth quite a journey, IMNHO.

Gonna listen to more Bowie records and collect up bits for an electronics project. Then I find a good place to store it and discover that three of them are already there. Will I ever use 13 fuse holders? 44 RCA audio jacks? A 52 lb filter inductor? Maybe. @Hill Dweller:

” The Obama daughter was actually on a service trip for her school, but wingers don’t give a shit about details. ”

I did not know that. I didn’t see that in any of the news stories, but then the kerfluffle was so silly, I only read one or two short pieces.

Seems like neither of the Obama kids will be old enough to pull off a drunken party hardy road trip while their dad is still in office. If only they were a few years older, that would be a BS scandal for the ages.

The rebellious side of me likes to see children of Very Serious People go rogue, off script, and create mass PR deviltry, regardless of party affiliation. And, dang, I think that last sentence is almost verbatim from my comment on Bush twins romp through Argentina.

Edit: Except, what would the Romney boy’s cook up for a wild time? That might be either hilariously corny and boring, or… I don’t want to think about it, and hope no dogs would be inadvisedly transportated.

    @PIGL:

I know people who knew Kinkade.
He was a heavy drinker. He was going through divorce proceedings in the last couple of years (not sure if it was completed), which wouldn’t have helped.
In the last few years he wasn’t even producing paintings — he had computer-scanned images of cottages, trees, ocean waves, etc. from his old paintings, and would assemble them on Photoshop to make new pictures.

Well, maybe not that big a batch. Three pizzas’ worth is all I like to do by hand and this evening feels like a good evening for kneading.

@Jewish Steel: Found it. It’s Wikipedia, so know that up front:

The Los Angeles Times has reported that some of Kinkade’s former colleagues, employees, and even collectors of his work say that he has a long history of cursing and heckling other artists and performers. The Times further reported that he openly groped a woman’s breasts at a South Bend, Indiana sales event, and mentioned his proclivity for ritual territory marking through urination, once relieving himself on a Winnie the Pooh figure at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim while saying “This one’s for you, Walt.”[28][29] In a letter to licensed gallery owners acknowledging he may have behaved badly during a stressful time when he overindulged in food and drink, Kinkade said accounts of the alcohol-related incidents included “exaggerated, and in some cases outright fabricated personal accusations.” The letter did not address any incident specifically. [29]
    __
In 2006 John Dandois, Media Arts Group executive, recounted a story that on one occasion (“about six years ago”) Kinkade became drunk at a Siegfried & Roy magic show in Las Vegas and began shouting “Codpiece! Codpiece!” at the performers. Eventually he was calmed by his mother.[28] Dandois also said of Kinkade, “Thom would be fine, he would be drinking, and then all of a sudden, you couldn’t tell where the boundary was, and then he became very incoherent, and he would start cursing and doing a lot of weird stuff like touching himself.”[28] On 11 June 2010, Kinkade was arrested in Carmel, California on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.[30]

Echoes of Iraq and Afghanistan will rattle around the nation for decades to come. On this Easter’s eve I’m thinking of Michael, his parents, and the tens of thousands of wounded and damaged vets across the country who still need our support. Before he became a Marine, Michael was a skinny, lanky, happy little kid his father occasionally brought to the office. After he was blown nearly to smithereens in Iraq I had the opportunity to shake his hand and wish him a complete recovery and a long life. Regrettably, that was not to be.
