Saturday Morning Open Thread
.
Got my first (of three) shipments of mail-order tomato plants yesterday, so today it’s off to my favorite local garden center to pick up fresh potting mix. And maybe some annuals, if I can’t resist — it’s probably warm enough to fill the hanging baskets again. Should check out their tomatoes, too, see if they’ve got some of the varieties I couldn’t find online. See y’all tomorrow, probably…

Apart from that, what’s on the agenda for the weekend?
Friday Recipe Exchange: Simple Fruit Desserts
.
From our Food Goddess, TaMara:
This week cooking was centered on desserts, most by request, so I thought it would make a good theme for tonight’s recipe exchange.
JeffreyW made one of my favorite toppings, Creme Fraiche, pictured above and recipe here.
He also makes quite a few dump cakes, which are easy fruit desserts. A yummy sample are his Cherry Pineapple here and Apple Crunch here.
I have a Blueberry Upside Down Cake in the oven as I write this, and if it turns out tasty and photogenic, I’ll post photos and recipe tomorrow.
Until then, what’s on your plate this weekend? Is it time for grilling yet? Hit the comments and don’t forget to share your favorite fruit desserts.
BTW, if you haven’t seen the latest visitor to the shelter Mrs. J volunteers at, he has stolen my heart, check out Hank.
Tonight’s featured recipe is my annual birthday cake for a friend. Simple to make and very tasty:

Do check out RawStory‘s article…
OMG, this stuff is so funny. #OperationAmericanSpring is a false flag comedy routine isn't it?

Wingnut “American Spring” Rally Flops Big Time
Via valued commenters Anoniminous and RalfW, the “take back our country” rally was a resounding failure. Excerpts from “even the wingnut Washington Times” article on the fail parade:
Operation American Spring, billed as a Friday morning multi-million patriot march on Washington, D.C., to oust leadership from the nation’s capital — from President Obama to House Speaker John Boeher — has proven woefully below expectations.
“It’s a very dismal turnout,” said Jackie Milton, 61, a Jacksboro, Texas, resident and the head of Texans for Operation American Spring, to The Washington Times. He said hopes were high when he arrived in Alexandria, Va., a day or so ago and found motels and hotels were sold out for 30 miles around.
“We were getting over two inches of rain in hour in parts of Virginia this morning,” Mr. Milton said. “Now it’s a nice sunny day. But this is a very poor turnout. It ain’t no millions. And it ain’t looking like there’s going to be millions. Hundreds is more like it.”
Actually, tens is even more like it:
Assholes.

Big Trouble with Little Inbreed
From the story Anne Laurie posted, it sounds like the Times done fucked up:
Abramson’s attempt to raise the salary issue at a time when tempers were already frayed seemed wrongheaded to Sulzberger and Thompson, both on its merits and in terms of her approach. Bringing in a lawyer, in particular, seems to have struck them as especially combative. Eileen Murphy, a spokeswoman for the Times, argued that there was no real compensation gap, but conceded to me that “this incident was a contributing factor” to the firing of Abramson, because “it was part of a pattern.” (Update: Murphy wrote to me after this post went up to dispute this. Her quote is accurate and in context, as I’ve confirmed in my notes. However, she now e-mails: “I said to you that the issue of bringing a lawyer in was part of a pattern that caused frustration. I NEVER said that it was part of a pattern that led to her firing because that is just not true.”)
No surprise she tried to walk that back, as Josh Marshall notes, because you probably shouldn’t fire someone for getting a lawyer when they’re alleging employment discrimination, unless you want to guarantee a lawsuit. But Murphy was in a tough spot. She had to shit all over Abramson on Pinch’s orders, and if you want to portray Abramson as uppity, hiring the lawyer rather than accepting that she was underpaid for two decades is definitely something that people who value having a pecker at $100K/year would think is out of line.
Frankly, I don’t care who edits the Times, but it sure is fun to see that half-bright prince fuck up. I’m sure journalism will survive, but the Times may not. Since Abramson has settled, this is probably a moot point, other than the shellacking Pinch is going to get from his liberal readers.
Time Wasting Assholes
I have a new mission in life: Banning you assholes who are trying to comment in binary (“010101010”). Is this a “thing”? Did you learn about it on Facebook or are you just taking Comp Sci 101 for the first time?
There’s enough work monitoring the diarrhea that leaks through the Spam filter without a new form of scheiss clogging it up.
