Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The revolution will be supervised.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Let’s finish the job.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

After roe, women are no longer free.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz sighting!

image

Don’t worry; it’ll get better. Here’s a crowd you wouldn’t see at a Trump rally:

image

They’ve repurposed the GOP convention’s “lock her up” chant, saying “lock him out” (of the White House). Here’s Charlie Crist:

image

Don’t worry; it’ll get better.

Must be a fairly large number of ex-cheerleaders in attendance; new cheers go up every few minutes. Here’s Bill Nelson:

image

Will post updates as I’m able!

UPDATE:

image

Tada! She gave a terrific speech.

I think her laughter about the attacks on her at the RNC is the perfect tone. I don’t think anything will infurate Drumpf more than being laughed at. Though I don’t think most of Drumpf’s supporters care that much about the lack of solutions he offered. His airing of their grievances is enough.

Meanwhile, Twitter is trying like hell to block #DNCLeaks, a bunch of progressives are freaking out over what’s in there, but ALL that’s in there is exactly what I knew all along: the Clinton side fought Sanders super hard from day one, with the full cooperation of the DNC, just as I was always saying.

There’s like nothing actually newsworthy about DNCLeaks unless you actually believed the spin about how Clinton wasn’t trying to beat Sanders in every possible way. If that’s the best they’ve got, the worst it will do is shake naive Clinton people who didn’t think Hillary pulled all the strings.

As a Bernie supporter prepared to throw my vote behind Clinton on the grounds that she is an effective and ruthless politician with a seasoned team prepared to go up against the worst Republicans can throw against us, this changes nothing. Literally all it does is confirm a bunch of things I said here and got yelled at for.

She manipulated the DNC and went as close to the line as she dared to defeat Bernie, with their enthusiastic collusion, and she also controls the media as much as she possibly can. This is 2016 politics and you can’t reform it from in the middle of it. My hope is that the aside (also found in the leaks) about how she has to stay left and not tack to the center for fear of losing young voters, still holds. Most of what we claimed she/DNC was doing is now confirmed, and she’s still not Trump (and, for that matter, is still one hell of an opponent for anybody. Imagine her turning all that against Trump. Oh, wait, she probably already is)

I particularly like the ‘don’t email me that you’re using DNC funds for the Clinton campaign. Don’t be a dick.’ one. We are apparently not idiots. The Republicans in the same situation are idiots. Our side knows the line even when we break the law, and don’t take it for granted: there’s some wariness and caution which is warranted.

You play to win, or you don’t play. You leverage every advantage you have available to you. You take it up to the line, and when nobody’s looking, you cross it. You twist the knife while smiling in the victim’s face. Along the way, you do some good for your constituents.

If we want more progressive candidates to actually succeed , we need to take a step back and look at what we did right (online fundraising) and what we did wrong (minority outreach, training organizers). This endless fucking pity party that is going on is completely useless and is doing nothing but massaging bruised egos of people who should goddamn know better. And after this week I have no patience for it anymore.

It’s over. Accept it, learn from it, and move on with your life.

Arkansas man sues police officer for excessive force after getting Tasered for refusing to give cop his name

An Arkansas man was the victim of excessive police force when he was Tasered repeatedly for refusing to give an officer his name during an encounter on Fourth of July, a new lawsuit says.

Blytheville, Ark., police officer Stephen Sigman, the target of the lawsuit, charged Chardrick Mitchell with resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct.

But shocking body cam footage of the exchange shows Sigman not telling Mitchell he was under arrest until he fired the Taser gun at the man’s back, who was casually walking away from the officer.

“At no time did Mr. Mitchell resist arrest, especially since he had already been tased when he was first told he was under arrest, even though he had at that point committed no possible criminal act,” the lawsuit, filed by Chardrick’s attorney James Harris, reads.

Cert petition says judge’s 89-page opinion was ghostwritten by prosecutors
    POSTED JUL 21, 2016 07:00 AM CDT

    BY DEBRA CASSENS WEISS

An Alabama death-row inmate is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether federal courts may defer to an 89-page judicial opinion that was entirely ghostwritten by prosecutors.

The state judge who adopted the ghostwritten opinion as his own didn’t even drop the word “proposed” from the title “Proposed Memorandum Opinion,” the Marshall Project reported in a look at the case in June. The cert petition (PDF) filed on behalf of the inmate, Doyle Lee Hamm, argues the case presents “the opportunity to rectify the problem of sham judicial opinions in capital cases.”

Though judges often rely on attorneys to draft routine orders, judges in both Alabama and Texas rely on ghostwriting for substantive opinions, the article reported.

Since that initial story, the Marshall Project says it received “a wave of emails from defense attorneys” who said judges have also relied on ghostwritten opinions in capital cases in Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Ohio.

Stephen Bright, president and senior counsel of the Southern Center for Human Rights, told the Marshall Project the problem of ghostwritten opinions in Alabama has lingered for decades. He believes appeals courts have never directly addressed the issue partly because judges don’t want to embarrass each other.

    A Voting Rights Story
    Injustice in North Carolina
    By Sam Fulwood III |
    Friday, July 22, 2016

    ……………………

Voting rights in retreat in North Carolina—and across the nation
On its surface, this is a story about Mickey Michaux and his lifetime accomplishments. But in its full truth, this story is about a simple and basic American right: voting.

More specifically, it’s about North Carolina’s current effort to retreat from the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This landmark legislative tour de force played a significant part in moving this nation closer to its founding ideals of political self-governance for every citizen of the land.

Today, North Carolina is at the center of a national struggle to preserve what remains of the Voting Rights Act. In the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision, the section of the Voting Rights Act that required all or parts of 15 states to get the approval of the federal government before making changes in voting law was effectively repealed. Since then, conservative legislators in the Tar Heel state have passed a set of laws that its proponents argue are needed to safeguard against voter fraud, but which actually rescinded voting rights in the state.

North Carolina is not alone: Several state legislatures are insisting voters show photo identification or imposing other restrictions. One onerous law in Texas could affect more than a half million voters who lack proper ID. In Arizona, lawmakers imposed rules for registering, early voting, and provisional voting, which resulted in widespread confusion and long lines in March’s presidential primary.

But in North Carolina, the new restrictions did more than just require voters to present photo identification. It ordered reductions in the number of early-voting days, ended same-day registration, and ended preregistration policies that allowed teenagers to qualify to register to vote before their 18th birthday. None of this would have been possible if the Voting Rights Act were still functionally in place.

“This is not a photo ID bill,” said the Rev. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, one of the lead plaintiffs suing the state. “The court ruled on the most sweeping, retrogressive voter suppression bill that we have seen since the 19th century and since Jim Crow and the worst in the nation since the Shelby decision.”

Early on in the ordeal, Twitter user Marissa Rei, the same user who started #BlackOutDay, started the #LoveForLeslieJ hashtag in order to take a stand of support. Soon after, notables like Ghostbusters director Paul Feig and actresses Anna Kendrick, Jada Pinkett Smith and Margaret Cho flocked to it. Even yesterday, Viola Davis added a late addition to the movement. But surprisingly, none of Jones’ Ghostbusters co-stars leant their voices.

Of the four female co-stars, only Jones and Melissa McCarthy have official Twitter accounts. And while McCarthy’s latest Tweets stop a week ago and are mostly just auto-posts from Instagram, her favorites go up to this past Friday, acknowledging some fan love for the film. Since then, McCarthy, as well as Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig, who round out the cast, have been radio silent. For a group that appeared to band together and battle the backlash of the Ghostbusters reboot as a united front, it’s been strange to see Jones forced to face the abuse sans her co-stars. Especially considering the issue is seemingly so cut and dry. So what’s going on?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’m fine referring to the name of the actual perpetrator of the crime rather than one who didn’t exist at the time.

Wait, you think a name change means that a completely different person comes into existence?

You must get very confused reading movie star biographies. Some of them changed their names more than once, even. Did you really not get that Norma Jean Baker and Marilyn Monroe were in fact the same person? Or think that Muhammad Ali couldn’t possibly be sent to jail for refusing to join the Army because, after all, it was Cassius Clay Jr. who actually refused, not this other guy named Ali?

joes527 and Aimai here may be an example of men and women not actually communicating. I, a woman, read joes527′ initial comment about Hillary failing by changing her scheduled VP announcement because of the ongoing situation in Munich as a really nit picky comment coming from a dude who never can pass up an opportunity to tell a woman she is doing it wrong. Then I realized that was an uncharitable reading of the comment that said more about me than what joe’s words spelled out. I think Aimai responded as I would if I hadn’t given a second thought and applied my aunt’s suggestion to lean towards the most generous reading when something is unclear. It saves aggravation at least until the meaning becomes more apparent. I can wait to get aggravated at least one refresh screen; it can only help with the blood pressure and keeping the thread friendly.
No offense to joes527 or Aimai intended, they simply seemed a clear example of what has been my latest attitude goal.

Why black men fear that any police encounter could go awry
    Jul. 22, 2016 9:33 AM EDT

Charles Kinsey held his hands in the air and shouted to police that the autistic man sitting on the street next to him wasn’t dangerous. A few seconds later, he felt a bullet rip into his leg.

The therapist, who is black and works with people with disabilities, was rounding up a patient who had wandered away from a facility when he was ordered by police officers to lie on the ground. Kinsey imagined that “as long as I’ve got my hands up, they’re not going to shoot me. This is what I’m thinking. Wow, was I wrong,” he told a television station.

The shooting in Florida earlier this week illustrates the longstanding fear among black men that almost any encounter with police can go awry with potentially deadly results, even when a person follows every law enforcement command.

Police are known to pull their triggers “no matter how you follow their directions,” emphasized Isaial Murray, a black 28-year-old construction worker in Detroit.

She was publicly criticized by the campaign, and so was the entire Democratic Party – but her frustration was kept private. A STORY ABOUT CHARLES KINSEY, MY NEW (WHITE) NEIGHBORS, AND THE RACIAL POLITICS OF CALLING THE POLICE
    Damon Young, 7/21/16

    ……………………..

Adding to this diversity is a homeless shelter that sits a block away from my building. In fact, on a given day, I’d estimate that 10 to 20 percent of the people walking through this neighborhood are somehow connected to the shelter. Some live there, some lived there and still hang around because their friends live there, and some don’t live there but hang around the neighborhood because of the numerous food trucks and food banks and other charitable entities that provide food for the residents. And some just hang around because they don’t have anywhere else to go. A couple of them hang out in the coffee shop all day long; playing chess, reading the newspaper, and escaping the heat or the rain or the cold.

We’ve lived here for a year. And while the shelter definitely attracts some very colorful characters — and my wife and I are each asked for money (or a “ride downtown” or a bottle of water) at least once a week — we’ve never once felt in any type of danger. Partially because we’re both from similar types of inner-city neighborhoods and possess a certain level of learned street smarts. But mostly because these are not dangerous people. They’re mostly just people who happen to be going through some hard times.

Our building has two two-story loft units. Two weeks ago, a new couple moved into the second one. (A man and a woman.) They look to be in their late 20s or early 30s, they seem to be nice people, and they’re White. And although they’ve been here less than a month, they’ve already called the police on one of the homeless people loitering near the coffee shop. Which drew several cops to our shared ground-level door. And still, a week later, annoys the fuck out of me.

Nice to have A Democratic Governor act like, you know, a democrat. VA governor McCauliff after the VA supreme court overruled his executive order allowing felons who had paid their debt to societies the right to vote:

The men and women whose voting rights were restored by my executive action should not be alarmed. I will expeditiously sign nearly 13,000 individual orders to restore the fundamental rights of the citizens who have had their rights restored and registered to vote. And I will continue to sign orders until I have completed restoration for all 200,000 Virginians. My faith remains strong in all of our citizens to choose their leaders, and I am prepared to back up that faith with my executive pen. The struggle for civil rights has always been a long and difficult one, but the fight goes on.”

That is a high crime in the age of Trump.

Apparently Trump spent his post-RNC sewer presser obsessing over the not-niceness of Cruz and Kasich. I don’t know the details. I can’t watch anything or anybody associated with that mess without flying into a rage. Was watching video of that vicious fool’s acceptance speech last night and was astonished and outraged. @FEMA Camp Counselor: This too. I saw stuff even in a brief glance-over of the leak that seems not to have been acted on. Some was, some wasn’t. Notably, I didn’t see any sign that they tried to play up Bernie as an atheist in the South, nor did they need to as Clinton did fine without it.

Don’t be over-precious. I just can’t help but be smug that my more cynical view won out. I think we can wipe out Trump, and what’s more: UNLIKE Bernie, I truly believe Hillary can put the primary behind her and build bridges where needed. By all reports she is strangely gifted at doing just this and it’ll be nice to see. I hope Bernie’s slow-arriving but seemingly earnest support leads to a forgiveness of his unsuccessful but fierce opposition: I want to be able to say ‘I’m with THEM’. We will need more than one powerful Democrat, more than a single lefty to get shit done.

    @WarMunchkin:

Having actually looked through the leaks, I found nothing damning.

Did you manage to download all of them somehow? I was only able to find some social security numbers (using search term “ssn”), which was pretty damning for wikileaks itself. Really? They did no redaction? A-holes. (Using a semi-secure laptop with Tor browser for this sort of thing.)

Hey, maybe they’re secretly angling for a Hillary Clinton win; the wikileaks thing boosts the easily-sold narrative of how the Russians are shamelessly working to boost the odds of a D. Trump win, expecting in return the Baltics and a weaker, isolationist America.
