Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Accountability, motherfuckers.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

In after Baud. Damn.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Question of the year: Does Trump corrupt everyone, or did he just gather to himself all the people on the right who were already corrupt? https://t.co/4IdkiZjkl2

Trump’s like one of those porch lights that sends out a pheromonal signal to moths, only for horrible people instead of nuisance insects.

I’m honestly afraid to speculate on actions that might be too base even for Littlefinger ShitGibbon, because then there will be another tape released of those very actions within 24 hours…

I do remember what happened when Rahm Emanuel used the word retarded, the GOP and the media were so disgusted – wonder if it will have the same reaction this time around?

I didn’t think so – when you are representing the party with the divine right to rule – nothing you say matters.

Dilbert is throwing in the towel on Trump. He says he wasn’t wrong to guarantee a Trump win- instead it was that no one could anticipate that Trump is a huge jerk and a cretin and people might find that out during a Presidential campaign.

Anyway, getting to the point of this post, if Clinton wins, it will be because women voted for her in landslide proportions while men (on average) preferred Trump. And that means two things of historic importance.
    1. We will elect the first woman to be President of the United States. That’s good for everyone.
    and…
    2. Everything that goes wrong with the country from this point forward is women’s fault.

Men had a good run. We invented almost everything, and that’s cool. But we also started all of the wars and committed most of the crimes. It’s a mixed record to be sure. Now it’s time for something different, apparently.
Hillary Clinton is all yours, ladies. She and her alleged rapist husband are your brand now. Wear them well.

He’s unhinged but it doesn’t matter because he’s a cartoonist, not President.

As far as I’m concerned it’s now clear anyone who spent any time with Trump knew this, and no one said anything over decades.

It’s exactly like the Ailes situation. Decades that went on, and in a “newsroom”.

But did the future Republican nominee go too far in dealing with the female celebrities? At least one former contestant thinks so.
“Watching him in the boardroom making sexual comments to Marlee Matlin, to all of the women on the Apprentice, it was obvious that that’s just a part of who he is,” says 2011 contestant Richard Hatch. “It was obvious and it was grotesque. It was blatant and it was frequent. He did it with Lisa Rinna; He did it with Marlee Matlin. He did it with whomever happened to be there at the time.”

@Kay: my first encounter with Adams’ douchebaggery was years ago, when I learned he was a proponent of Intelligent Design, and I remember being kind of surprised and disappointed–Dilbert originally seemed like a fairly sympathetic character. Once one of my friends told me that the stand-in character for the author was actually Dogbert, it all made a lot more sense. If there was a way to harness arrogance as a power source, you could probably run an entire metropolitan area off of Adams.

They were afraid of him. They’re still afraid of him. Donald Trump hasn’t “destroyed” any of his enemies. The only people he’s “destroyed” are little people- the small businesses he stiffed because they were too weak to fight him. They were afraid of a giant fraud. Their base would have rallied around any GOP-er. The best evidence for this is Trump himself. They would have forgotten all about Trump and happily voted for any anti-Clinton candidate they put up.

Last month Vanity Fair reposted a profile I wrote in 1994, when the then first lady was working on healthcare reform. The article quoted a powerful Capitol Hill insider who compared Mrs Clinton’s performance with that of her husband, the president. “I’ve seen them both make presentations, with dozens of senators at the table, and she’s better than he is,” he said. “And these guys know it. They’ve sat in rooms with her, and they’ve sat in rooms with him. He’s good – he’s very good. She’s just fucking perfect.”

About the same time that the Rethuglican Party stops acting like treasonous assholes. And I have no idea what the over/under for that date is, but I’m guessing no one picks the “over.”

@Kay: He must be saying that even using a favorable right-leaning demo model, the poll still has Clinton +8.

I just wish it were Clinton +20 or Clinton +30. Scary to think of how many absolutely debased people I’m cohabiting with in this country.

@NorthLeft12: Scott Adams has actually been saying equally horrible things for years; he has an intense misogyny that he often expresses in violent terms. It just got more niche interest.

Trump doesn’t like the woman, but he has to bang her anyway, good lord. Talk about turning yourself into a self propelled penis.

Question of the year: Does Trump corrupt everyone, or did he just gather to himself all the people on the right who were already corrupt?

This is not a particularly interesting question. The answer is the latter, particularly when discussing someone like D’Souza. He was corrupt from the start, as his self-created job is to create bomb-throwing “documentaries” aimed at true believers every election cycle. There’s no deep thinking or progressing conservatism beyond trying be visible during fundraising periods.

    @NorthLeft12:

My wife and I had a long discussion about sexual assault, and we agreed that part of Trump’s schtick was that if women did not forcefully react to his predations that he thought that they were implying consent.

Then you fucked up, because the problem here is that consent is not a concept to the Donald.

It would mean a woman could have an opinion, a distinct point of view other than his own. This man doesn’t think in terms of consent. He thinks in terms of doing stuff or not doing stuff, and what manipulations he can do with reality to get his stuff on. The concept of other self-aware minds, much less whether they’re entitled to some sort of deference, is not strong with the Donald.

As for Ivanka, he made her and named her the diminutive form of his wife and had her between what, 11 and 15? local in New York? It’s not really very complicated what he wanted.

@Applejinx: No, I think he was pretty clear in the “hot mike” comments that “they let you do this” is his concept of consent. I am not defending the guy, but trying to understand him and others like him. Unfortunately, this criminal behavior will not be changed until they are called out on it immediately and loudly and then suffer the consequences that they deserve.
I am sure they will complain about “political correctness” all the way through their trial.

@Gindy51: Oh, there’s a LOT of other things going on there, too. Remember, his mother was blond, and he married Ivana before Ivanka was around. I think there’s also a bit of the Egyptian pharaoh thing going on – they were always inbreeding, because only royalty is good enough for royal blood – as well.
I’ll bet Marla knew about the Ivanka situation. That’s why Tiffany grew up on the other coast.

The brain bleach is only $1.99 a gallon over at the counter.

    And D’Souza:

I guess it is now fine for men to use women’s bathrooms but not for the CEO of Miss Universe to walk into a woman’s dressing room

These two sorts of events are not logically connected in any way; IF the CEO of Miss Universe was female it would be fine for her to walk into a woman’s dressing room. Which has nothing to do with bathrooms. What about gender does D’Souza understand? Nada. Zilch, nothing. How stupid….

What did D’Souza major in at that college he went to? Not Logic for sure. What a dirtbag. I welcomed so many quality people from S Asia to the US, but there was one guy…
