Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

In my day, never was longer.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Our Failed Intellectual Overlords Open Thread: Thiel Speaks Out for Trump

Peter Thiel assures us Trump will not get the country into wars, regardless of what he says. https://t.co/XEqziMG0AD pic.twitter.com/mbazqQkx62

— NYT Opinion (@nytopinion) October 31, 2016

In the good old days, a white man with money could get the respect to which he felt entitled, no matter how inane his stated opinions! These days, even the NYTimes mocks Peter ‘Bathory’ Thiel…

… Speaking on Monday at the National Press Club in Washington, Mr. Thiel argued that Mr. Trump was the best choice in the presidential race because he will not get the country into wars, will fix the problems caused by international trade and will remove government regulations that are hurting the economy. Americans should focus on that big picture, Mr. Thiel argued, rather than taking “literally” everything Mr. Trump says.

“What Trump represents isn’t crazy and it’s not going away,” Mr. Thiel said…

Instead of bothering ourselves with Mr. Trump’s statements, Mr. Thiel said we should worry that Hillary Clinton could escalate tensions with Russia because she might try to enforce a no-fly zone in Syria. In other words, don’t pay attention to what Mr. Trump says but definitely be very concerned about what Mrs. Clinton says…

As he did in his speech at the [RNC] convention, Mr. Thiel on Monday painted a dystopian picture of the economy, which he said had been devastated by the technology bubble of the 1990s and the housing bubble of the last decade. He appeared to blame the problem on government regulations and said Mr. Trump understood that and knew how to fix it. But Mr. Thiel offered no evidence to back up that claim…

Look, Donald Trump (a) has a penis, and (b) promises to slash Peter Thiel’s taxes, not to mention eliminating all those aggravating little ‘government regulations’ that prohibit Thiel from literally buying healthy young plasma donors on the open market, or starting a new Manhattan Project that would let America support its oligarchy through the threat of force. Why can’t the little people understand Peter Thiel’s whims are just more important than the survival of the world outside Peter Thiel’s barony?

CHAFFETZ: Yes
CHRISTIE: THIEL

RYAN: Thiel's a fascinating guy.
BOEHNER: The word you're looking for is "dumb." (sip)
RYAN: But he's–
BOEHNER: Rich? Kid, how old are you?

I seriously thought this was a joke until I watched the video.

I’m pretty sure overprivileged, underthinking white guys are going to need a big support group after this election. Dr. Phil will be reaching out soon.

Looks like Peter Thiel hasn’t given up on the Seasteading idea. Instead of building it off of California, they’re going for French Polynesia.

Plans call for ground (or water?) to be broken on the seastead as early as next year, with completion a few years later. It would be comprised of a city built on two or three platforms about the size of half a football field that can house 30 people. More platforms can be added as needed.

@Origuy: I’ve heard of this. The Douchebarge.

I’ve often wanted to have one ready for when partying fratboys get too annoying in my neighborhood. Lure them onto it with free beer and canned gangsta rap music and then just float it out to sea.

Ahhh the dream. You can make it happen, Peter! What with your multidigit millions and all.

As a philosophy, half-baked. Cost projections are ludicrously low as well, even for the most spartan of accommodations. Purely as a construction project, not all that far removed in concept from that of several airports.

Straits of Malacca pirates a lot closer.

Southeast Asia was the location of 41% of the world’s pirate attacks between 1995 and 2013. The West Indian Ocean, which includes Somalia, accounted for just 28%, and the West African coast only 18%. During those years, 136 seafarers were killed in Southeast Asian waters as a result of piracy — that’s twice the number in the Horn of Africa, where Somalia lies, and more than those deaths and the fatalities suffered in West Africa combined. Source

According to the report from the ICC and IMB, pirates in Southeast Asia hijack a small coastal tanker every two weeks on average. Recent reports show that from January until June this year [2015], 56 cases of piracy had taken place in the Malacca Strait. Of this number, 21 were cases of suspected piracy, 22 were attempted piracies, and 13 were confirmed piracies. Indonesia has the highest number of attacks, accounting for almost 40 percent of the attacks in 2015. Vietnam has also seen an increase in armed robbery incidents, with thieves breaking into ships at anchor. Most acts of piracy are carried out by armed gangs that target small coastal tankers to steal their fuel. The increased frequency of piracy attacks in Southeast Asia can be compared with incidents in Somalia. According to an April 2015 IMB report, there were zero incidents of piracy for Somalia in the first quarter of 2015. If these figures are accurate, Southeast Asia has now regained the reputation as the worst region in the world for piracy. Source

@Origuy: And what navy is going to patrol the waters to make sure that pirates don’t hold them hostage? The same navy that Thiel thinks is taking too much of his taxes? Let’s not forget the costs of running supplies to and from his party platform, or what it would cost to hire people to live on what is basically a floating ark in the middle of nowhere. (You don’t think he’s going to do his own laundry?)

    CarolDuhart2

And promising there will be no conflict is a fool’s promise. There are many low-level wars already going on, and any incident could draw us in simply because we would have to contain the carnage.

Rich does not equal smart. Smart does not equal wise. I wish our media would spend more time with wise people than rich, but that would require that they recognize and value wisdom, and I suspect the only thing they recognize and value is rich. (A few reporters and pundits excepted.)
