Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I was promised a recession.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Republicans in disarray!

Consistently wrong since 2002

This really is a full service blog.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Evening Earworms Open Thread

A few ear worms to carry us towards the overnight.

First up is a song made for the Warner Brothers catalog by BER intended to sound like a generic 80s pop song. After a snippet of it was featured in the spoof cartoon Teen Titans Go it became popular enough to become the basis for a dedicated extended episode of the show, as well as a cover by Fall Out Boy. This video is that cover with clips from the episode. The mecha is Fall Out Boy as the magical music robot Fall OutBot. The cyborg polar bear is CeeLo Green as CeeLo Bear.

Next up is Sia’s Move Your Body. Which was originally offered by Sia to Shakira, who turned it down. It is also the ear worm music featured in one of the Lexus ads.

Finally a cover of Sweet’s Fox on the Run by the all female group The Regrettes:

Post your favorite and/or most insidious ear worms in the comments.

For the past month: These songs by O.G.C. and De La Soul which flip (to classic effect, IMHO) “Figure Eight” and “Genius of Love,” respectively.

I used to think that this was my town
What a stupid thing to think
    I hear you’re fighting off a breakdown
I myself am on the brink
I used to want to be a real man
I don’t know what that even means
Now I just want you in my arms again
And we can search each other’s dreams

    [Chorus]
    I know you’re tired
    And you ain’t sleeping well
    Uninspired
    And likely mad as hell
    But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again

    [Verse 2]
I’ve heard enough of the white man’s blues
    I’ve sang enough about myself
So if you’re looking for some bad news
You can find it somewhere else
Last year was a son of a bitch
    For nearly everyone we know
But I ain’t fighting with you down in a ditch
I’ll meet you up here on the road

    [Chorus]
    I know you’re tired
    And you ain’t sleeping well
    Uninspired
    And likely mad as hell
    But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again
To a world you want to live in

    [Bridge]
    We’ll ride the ship down
    Dumping buckets overboard
There can’t be more of them than us
    There can’t be more

    [Chorus]
    I know you’re tired
    And you ain’t sleeping well
    Uninspired
    And likely mad as hell
    But wherever you are
I hope the high road leads you home again
To a world you want to live in
To a world you want to live in

Last month, aboard the boat in Skagway, my excellent BIL and I sat up late in the second deck midships lounge. Red wine, an astonishing tiny Bose stereo, and excerpts from his music collection from his phone. Anyway, one result was that this was my earworm during hurricanes and an unusual Silicon Valley September thunderstorm.

When I was a teenybopper, our local radio stations played both the English and the German versions interchangeably. Since I sometimes have trouble understanding lyrics in English, it confused the hell out of me for quite a while. Especially when I felt confident that it was the German version, and then she blurted out “Captain Kirk” and I was confused again about which language it was since there was an English phrase in it.

@Mnemosyne: When madame watches Korean TV stations here, during the commercials you’ll hear a bunch of Korean and the “Big Sale” and then more Korean.

Neunundneunzig Luftballons is an antiwar song, nobler in intent and better written than anything uttered by Pat Buchanan.

Talim made landfall on Kyshu a few hours ago as a tropical storm. Swept across the island pretty quickly and is now making landfall on my island, Shikoku. We’re on the far east side of the island so the storm is about 140 miles away now. Wind has picked up in the last half hour as we’ve entered the outer wind field. Moving at the speed it is, things probably won’t get too, too bad for too long. Looks like the winds are about 50 to 60 knots. My father-in-law is watching the baseball game…Yomiuri Giants in the Tokyo Dome…I just finished cooking brownies for desert. The wife just watched The Professional on tv. A fairly typical Sunday…but for the high winds and rain. Just another September Sunday, really. Typhoons are a regular occurrence.

I think some sort of party on my block got busted by the police because there’s suddenly a lot of loud drunk people crowding the sidewalk, like eighty of them. I’m on the ground floor. It’s got me on edge!

@Amir Khalid: I think you missed the joke. Molly Ivins said after listening to Uncle Pat’s speech “It sounded better in the original German”. IOW, it sounded like a speech that could have been given in Germany in the mid-1930’s.

OK, first off, that drummer was male, so., not all female and second, what did that add or change that improved on the original?
    They were charming.
Their version was… fine. But I can’t think of one thing about it that recommends it above the Sweet original.
If you want to hear Sweet, just fucking listen to Sweet! They were amazing like salted chocolate. I’d stab a bitch in the neck to hear Teenage Rampage! ( I would not, in fact, stab anyone, anywhere, for any reason other than self defense)
