Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Second rate reporter says what?

Consistently wrong since 2002

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

I’m switching back and forth between that and Packers vs. Falcons. OMG, Colbert just trotted Sean Spicer out for a cameo as Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer. Really.

Lorne Michaels on Donald Trump: “He Could End Up Being the Moderate”
3:54 PM PST 2/9/2016 by Ryan Parker

“There is something happening there, or it wouldn’t be resonating,” the creator of ‘Saturday Night Live’ said.
Donald Trump being so quickly written off by many critics when he first announced his 2016 presidential campaign was the first clue to Lorne Michaels that the billionaire businessman would likely be around for a while.

Talking with the New York Times Magazine for a piece published Tuesday, the creator of Saturday Night Live said the situation reminded him of when Ronald Reagan announced his bid for the White House.

“Whenever anybody is that quickly dismissed, you know the critics probably aren’t right,” Michaels told the magazine. “I remember in ’79, ’80, Democrats said, ‘You know, Reagan’s an actor.’ Like voters don’t know that. There’s a smugness to that attitude that causes the voting public to go, ‘We’re smarter than that.'”

Trump, who has been ahead in the polls essentially since entering the race last year, is not always couth, and that is an asset, said Michaels.

“Donald’s giving voice to what polite society has sort of sat on for a while, things that are felt but that no one is articulating. There is something happening there, or it wouldn’t be resonating,” he told the magazine.

Since throwing his hat into the race, Trump has hosted SNL, a somewhat controversial move for two reasons: First, it ruffled feathers of other GOP candidates who wanted their fair share of free airtime, as is mandated in FCC regulations. Second, the show and NBC were criticized by Latino groups for allowing Trump onstage, a rage that stemmed from comments he made early on in his campaign concerning undocumented immigrants from Mexico being criminals.

Michaels said he did not understand the “platform” argument.

“I don’t go along with the idea that the American people can’t make up their own minds, and that if you expose them to these things, they will just be swept along. I mean, we have another year of this. Sunlight is the best disinfectant,” he said, according to the magazine.

As for how far Trump will go in his White House bid, Michaels said he had “no idea.”

Added Michaels: “He could end up being the moderate. People are always looking for [the show] to be on the side of [Hillary] Clinton, and that’s not what we do. If Trump is ascendant, then we will be discussing that.”

“Resonating”? Its called racism, old decrepit white guy.
This has not aged well at all. Couldn’t find anything recent to see if he regrets this.

Maybe this has been discussed at length in threads I missed, but just in case it hasn’t, it is a true must read. The piece, by David Roberts, is entitled Hillary Clinton’s “coal gaffe” is a microcosm of her twisted treatment by the media, but what it has to say is far more general. I have never been able to believe that the best explanation of what we witnessed in the press’s treatment of the last campaign is that reporters’ paymasters love Trump. Any attempt to fix this needs to begin with a plausible explanation of the phenomenon, and talk of who should be the first up against the wall, however satisfyingly, doesn’t help. This deserves to be read.

I’m just watching the Packers/Hawks game and surfing during slow moments and commercials.

Interestingly, I’m watching an NBC local station broadcast, and the audio is in Spanish. Interesting when Hulio Jones makes a catch. Perhaps NBC intends to infuriate millions of football fans who hate Mexican immigrants? Or doesn’t realize one can turn off the audio? Or someone at the local station who doesn’t watch football turned on the wrong audio feed?

Strange but not unique… this happened at least once before. Hulio Jones caught another pass, they’re going on about it. Yet Jimmy Jones has no Hs in his name… oh well. Loving Hulio Jones myself, except that he’s working for the wrong boss.

A good thing, yes. On the other hand, it was far more common than not for a non-megastar stand-up act to not be invited to the couch, all the way through the Allen, Paar and Carson years. It was considered a BFD to be invited over to sit after performing.

Had Gregory one or more TV comedy specials under his belt, cable or broadcast, I’d be in agreement with you. Within the enforced time constraints of the in memoriam pastiche, his omission is but one of many who might otherwise have been acknowledged.
