Some one mentioned earlier that the scariest result of the night for Republicans was the special election in WA state district 45: affluent suburbs, previously held by a Republican, the shitgibbon barely got a mention during the campaign… and the Democrat won by 11%.

We won with a diverse coalition too. Call it identity politics if you like.

Dems won 16 seats with 3 still too close to call.
There are 100 seats in the VA legislator and the Dems just flipped atleast 16% of them.
There are 435 seats in congress, if Dems flip 16% of those that would amount to 70 seats.

Let’s not forget that the real winning is in the downballot races. That is where it really matters. State legislatures are where voting district lines are drawn and where gerrymandering takes place, creating GOP strongholds when there are a majority of Democrats in the region. Medicare expansion, school funding, and infrastructure spending is determined by the state, doling out federal dollars as they see fit. Gun laws, restrictions on reproductive rights, and even rules on who can pee in certain places all come out of the state capitol. (It’s especially glorious that the Republican who proposed Virginia’s anti-transgender bathroom bill was defeated by Danica Roem, the state’s — and the nation’s — first openly transgender candidate. Karma, ya done good.)
So while it is important who wins the presidency and who’s running the House and Senate in Washington, it’s at the state and local elections where the real work — and influence — gets done.
PS: Shameless self-promotion: Today is the fourteenth anniversary of Bark Bark Woof Woof.

@Immanentize: It was a hard slog before this election. Tax law touches everything and everyone. The GOP has been getting a lot of push back on their current bill because they have found that it is impossible to create winners without creating losers. My bet is they end/cut the inheritance tax, give corporations a hand job or maybe just a sloppy wet kiss, wave away the increase in the deficit with dynamic scoring, and call it “the most important reform of the tax code in a hundred years”.
sharl
That appears to be one of those stories that is “developing” as they say:
In subsequent tweets Higgins clarifies that he is genuinely confused about what is actually happening. His tweet was a speculative guess at what might be going on, along with a general plea for confirmation or correction. The only responses he’s getting seem to indicate that he is not alone in being confused about what’s going on with the Tory cabinet.
I could see any reasonable person wanting to avoid Boris Johnson’s involvement in anything important, though. I assume the Mayor of London must be a job where the hard day-to-day work is done by staff, since Boris managed to not screw that up (as far as I know). If he were American we would say he was born on third but thought he had hit a triple; I don’t know what the equivalent British saying is for that sort of thing.

Maine legislature has tried to expand Medicaid by passing bills something like 5 times. (Vetoed by LP each time. Btw, he continues to fight other referendum results.) To me this vote also shows the fear caused by the R health care bills– (though I don’t yet see numbers for the 2nd district, where stealth-supported Polliquin hides out)– and we must make that fear stick to their extremist tax proposal and other R extremism.
The federal money will I hope help increase health care jobs (we have severe doctor and medical shortage in the rural eastern parts) and opioid addiction programs, which are nonexistent in much of the state.
And LP will hurt R chances for the next gov. if he stalls on this referendum.

With the Medicaid expansion we got two new (tiny) clinics. We had a medical group monopoly that never took Medicaid and is basically only available to middle and upper class with good private insurance.
One of the new clinics is a branch of a Toledo hospital- the hospital is 70 miles away. If there’s demand and an ability to get paid they show up. It’s an over-all good thing for rural areas, which is why the hatred of Obama is so nuts. Reading a little on LePage’s background, he is in his late 60’s, didn’t grow up with money and one of 18 kids. His current wife took a job waiting tables to help finance house they want for retirement. He doesn’t appear to be wealthy now although he might be. Still, he’s an oldie that could end up in a nursing home and his wife eating up their assets and be dependent on Medicaid for a place to live. Do old, not wealthy Republicans ever think of that or do they think they could never be in that situation.

@TS: It just became a state-wide requirement this year, but only a few jurisdictions weren’t paper ballots already. This change really isn’t as big a deal as many assume (Fairfax County has had paper ballots and optical scanners for several elections in a row). WaPo stories linked here earlier have more.
Vlad didn’t swing Virginia in the past (and won’t in the future).
HTH.

I’m not good at keeping all regular BJers backgrounds straight (hell, I can’t always remember all the names of my friend’s grandkids) but iirc, you have mentioned you had to abandon your favorite local pub since trump came on the scene due to hostile environment. No fun to live in a nest of vipers.

Y’know … if the odds of Speaker Pelosi in 2019 just became better, then the incredibly long odds of Acting President Pelosi on Election Day 2020 just became a bit less impossible.
(Yeah, yeah, I know, better odds of getting struck by lightning, but a million-to-one shot is still a shot, right?)

@MomSense: Fairfax County, which is very Democratic, has used them for several elections now. Since 2012 at least.

My very Republican suburban town in western NY elected Democrats to the Town Board for the first time in 100 years!

That must be fun. Ours is still 100% GOP.

DeVos is not at all dumb, but she has a facile “true believer” conservatism that I think comes off as impractical. These things she says are just not true. Schools really aren’t just like food trucks. Systems and governance do too matter. I think that comes thru locally in a way it doesn’t nationally. She can blow off funding and say “schools are just buildings” but that’s not near a good enough answer when the building is the issue- the actual structure. She’s weirdly abstract and that becomes irrelevant. it’s like ‘that’s a nice Ayn Rand lecture- let’s go vote on the school down the street”

In addition to all of the great news last night, Maricopa County had a large number of school bond and override requests in a wide variety of 22 districts. This is how we end up dealing with that whole “dead last in per-pupil funding” thing, not to mention the teacher-shortage-because-they’re-massively-underpaid thing.
All 27 of the requests are on track to pass, some with 50-point margins. This is…..not something that happens here in Maricopa County, historically speaking.
Great news.
(I have to confess that I went over to Breitbart to savor. SORRY.)

That was Ann Richards, not Molly. But one of the great lines!

@Immanentize: She was with him to the end. Think she wrote a poignant piece after his death. I’ll check for it. The biographer is a music critic who knew Reed and a couple of his wives well. At least that’s how Terry Gross is billing the interview.

Guys, whether they retract the wheels of not, the wheels went up off the ground at whatever a.m. Regardless of the bad weather, which no one seems to have looked up!
Maybe The Don should have slept in? Be more alert? More hours before sundown in his brain?

You should get a photo of her, if she asks what the F you’re doing, tell her it’s a election fraud felony to tamper with someone’s legal campaign material, the photo is so the police can ID her. Make her REALLY unhappy!!
You don’t even need to take a real one… since the Dems won anyway. I’m being bad this morning, aren’t I?

@MomSense: @Woodrow/Asim: I did tech support too, and literally could not for the life of me do it for my Mom or my Dad.
My mother was impossible because I’d devolve into fight/flight immediately. But I was able to avoid that with my father because he couldn’t type. Voila we bought him an iPad, because Siri etc, but he could never hear well enough to use the verbal commands & feedback. It was like he got into his 80’s and his ability to remember how to figure out stereo, video, telephone & tech in general just deserted him. Probably a function of muscle memory & memory. As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized I have to repeat things a few more times to remember how to do something technical, and it was like this went into overdrive for him after my mother’s death.
Anyway @MomSense, I finally bought that Apple package $99/year for the tech support so he I could take him to the Apple Store for them to teach him. That way it didn’t devolve into me losing my temper & feeling guilty.

@MomSense: I feel your pain.
Did it for years with my Mom. Especially frustrating because she hung on to an old computer running an old operating system. My brother and I finally told that we hadn’t used that version in years, and consequently we couldn’t help her anymore.

@OzarkHillbilly: That’s what we use in Fairfax County VA too. Along with scanning IDs on entry the combination really speeds up the voting process. The longest line I saw yesterday was about a dozen people waiting to check in. They scan the ID, ask you to verbally confirm your name and address, hand you back your ID along with a card you then hand to the person inside who takes the card, hands you your ballot. You fill in the circles (room for 16 at my polling place) and then an election official helps feed the ballot into the reader. You can see how many votes are already in the machine and see that the number goes up one when you’ve scanned your ballot. All the paper ballots go into a locked box inside the machine and are then available to recount if needed.
