long time progressive economist Robert Reich was on MSNBC denouncing tariffs as regressive taxes that hit the working class and the poor the hardest.
I saw Chris Hayes say he opposes tariffs because they produce bad policy and bad outcomes.
I saw Maddow decry Drumpf for pulling out of TPP.
Yet when Obama was president each of these idiots were bashing him and pushing Wilmer’s pro tariff demagoguery and hysteria.

Every time I start to think there’s a magazine out there worth subscribing to, they come up with their own version of the Obama story. There’s a bitter old Cuban saying, “en pescaderia de blancos, el negro carga el jamo.” Literally it means “when whites go fishing, the black guy carries the bait” but it’s used by black Cubans in the sense of “whenever white people have an issue, the black guy will get the blame.” It’s playing out in our world beautifully. They harassed him for everything he did, attacked him for saying things that were self-evident, questioned his credentials at every turn, but he’s supposed to devote his life to saving them from their own folly.

A great president of the United States might be noted by his ability to make the best use of the advice of his staff. Trump wants to be obeyed and confused advice with attempts to rein him in.
Trump wants to be acknowledged as the greatest white man since the invention of whiteness. And so he lives in his delusion that he is doing great and that his approval rating is sky high.
And so, speculation about staff reshuffles are meaningless. It doesn’t matter who this president surrounds himself with because of the fundamental emptiness at the center.
The media, and more importantly, the political leadership of both parties, keep pretending that Trump is ultimately a traditional president who will do traditional president things. This is also a delusion.
ETA. Is the North Korea meeting on or off? I hear conflicting stories that Trump was merely babbling when he said it was happening. Anyway, look for increasing craziness if Obama gets an official invite to Prince Harry’s wedding and Trump is left twiddling his little thumbs.

I think I mentioned that I’m reading Peggy Orenstein’s DON’T CALL ME PRINCESS, a collection of her essays on girls and women. I have no idea how people with more experience than I have will react to these essays, but I find them fascinating. There are a couple on breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with at 35. There’s one about mourning her miscarriage at a Japanese shrine. Another on conceiving her daughter using a donor egg. And now I’m reading one about being a white parent raising a mixed race child (her husband is Japanese American).

Yeah, I don’t get why anyone would go to work in the WH or for Trump. You couldn’t talk to anyone without a lawyer present. Not even “good morning.” If you said anything beyond that, you could find yourself facing treason charges, or at best spending a fortune on even more lawyers.
The level of people you’re going to get are the likes of Esau Bumblebutts from East Bumfuck, Arkansas, who could really use the money he earns working in the WH to pay for his meth habit.

@Amir Khalid: This. My dear Dad, spry as ever at 79, has been a staunch conservative since before I met him. And he detests Republicans, wants nothing to do with them. He occasionally will pull the lever for an R, but it’s almost strictly local. He laughed out loud when I asked him if he voted for the orange fartcloud.
Republicans exist to demonize ‘the other,’ it keeps the lizard brain in control. If the Democratic party disappeared tomorrow, they’d splinter just to have some new ‘other’ to demonize.
It’s a hardware feature, not a defect.

Week old news: Finally had the last of his stitches removed and is now able to walk on the leg a bit, at least around his apt, so things are progressing. His SO got a job tending bar just a couple blocks from their place so that has eased their need for a new vehicle. We thought we’d found one for him up here but it got sold out from under us. We’re all still looking. I’m sure I’ll be heading back down at some point this Spring.

A favorite truly no-knead recipe, although I prefer it sans bacon and add some herbage (oregano or basil) instead.
Beer, Bacon and Cheddar Bread
3 cups all-purpose flour
1½ tablespoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons honey
1 egg
12 ounces beer (room temp)
3 pieces thick-cut bacon, diced
1 cup shredded cheese
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Use cooking spray to thoroughly grease a 9×12 loaf pan.
Cook the bacon, drain fat and pat bacon dry
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl.
Lightly beat egg with honey, then pour it onto flour mixture and mix.
Add beer and mix into the batter, then add bacon and cheddar and fold into batter.
Spread batter evenly into the pan and bake for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the bread comes out clean.
Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack.
Cool another 10 minutes before cutting.
Optional: Brush top of loaf with melted butter at 40 minute mark, return to oven.

@Gretchen: As a divorced father, worrying about them was a waste of time. I just prepared myself for the worst. When we first got word, either my oldest misspoke or I misheard, that CJ went into the ambo “unresponsive”. Spent the next hour thinking he was in all likelihood dead. I went to a place inside me where there was no feeling. I’m not sure I could survive such a thing.

If it were you buying fighter planes for the Royal Saudi Air Force, would you want the long-delayed (and still not quite ready), overpriced, and unreliable F-35? The American military has spent three decades making a pig’s breakfast of the development project for that plane.
ETA: … And the Saudis may have been one of the international partners who spent those decades watching their share of the bill rising with little to show for it.

Happy and sad today. My husband’s blood work yesterday showed he’s still not needing any treatment for his CLL and hopefully it stays that way. One of my closest friends found out her much older husband’s prostate cancer is terminal; they have kids who are still in high school. She’s a few states away from where we live.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who is finding the Dump era to be a mental and physical time sink, I just don’t get much done because I’m spending too much time trying to keep up with the news and praying Bobby Three Sticks hits hard, fast, and completely. Its like a constant dark cloud, and the more I read the more stressed I get. I’m thankful for my husband’s continued good results and our two wonderful kittens; both bring me so much joy.

Can I just point out this is a terrible cartoon. Lisa Simpson is the conscience of the Simpsons – morally upright, thoroughly earnest, and gifted in intelligence, compassion, and artistic ability. Comparing Ivanka to her is terrible. And Bart isn’t academically gifted, but he is clever and quick witted. Again, absurd to compare him to Eric. And Homer, while being a bumbling ignorant boob, is rarely intentionally cruel. He is everyman, not a stupid Monty Burns. Again, it is a cruel and inapt comparison.

Definitely bread. Lots of types of beer breads. The beer sort of fills in for the yeast in kneaded bread so far as creating texture is concerned and the baking powder makes it rise.
