Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

The willow is too close to the house.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Somehow, he always assumed he’d enjoy this gig more…Gabriel Sherman, at Vanity Fair, reports Fuming in the West Wing, Trump Prepares to Defenestrate Cuck Allies and Go Full MAGA”:

Even before he decided to launch a trade war and roll the nuclear dice by agreeing in the course of a West Wing afternoon to a risky sit-down with Kim Jong Un, Donald Trump was telling friends he was tired of being reined in. “I’m doing great, but I’m getting all these bad headlines,” Trump told a friend recently. A Republican in frequent contact with the White House told me Trump is “frustrated by all these people telling him what to do.”

With the departures of Hope Hicks and Gary Cohn, the Trump presidency is entering a new phase—one in which Trump is feeling liberated to act on his impulses. “Trump is in command. He’s been in the job more than a year now. He knows how the levers of power work. He doesn’t give a fuck,” the Republican said. Trump’s decision to circumvent the policy process and impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum reflects his emboldened desire to follow his impulses and defy his advisers. “It was like a fuck-you to Kelly,” a Trump friend said. “Trump is red-hot about Kelly trying to control him.”

According to five Republicans close to the White House, Trump has diagnosed the problem as having the wrong team around him and is looking to replace his senior staff in the coming weeks. “Trump is going for a clean reset, but he needs to do it in a way that’s systemic so it doesn’t look like it’s chaos,” one Republican said…

[Spoiler alert: It will look like chaos. Because it will *be* chaos.]

…Sources said that the first officials to go will be Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, both of whom Trump has clashed with for months. On Tuesday, Trump met with John Bolton in the Oval Office. When he plans to visit Mar-a-Lago next weekend, Trump is expected to interview more candidates for both positions, according to two sources…

Next on the departure list are Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Trump remains fiercely loyal to his family, but various distractions have eroded their efficacy within the administration. Both have been sidelined without top-secret security clearances by Kelly, and sources expect them to be leaving at some point in the near future. One scenario being discussed is that Kushner would return to New York to oversee Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign with his ally Brad Parscale, who was hand-selected by the Trump family…

People who have spoken with Trump said his reset is being driven in part by the looming midterms, and he’s been fielding advice from Corey Lewandowski and Dave Bossie. They’ve counseled him to return to his 2016 campaign message. Another source said Trump has felt newfound validation after a CPAC straw poll last month showed him with a 93 percent approval rating. “He felt the crowd desiring more,” a Republican close to the White House said. “He knows there’s going to be a battle ahead.”…

Trump dined with Seb Gorka and Fox News’ Jesse Watters at the White House this week because “he couldn’t get enough of them on TV,” as one source put it to The Daily Beast. https://t.co/hxbGElkYY4

So yesterday morning, I go to the bedroom to get things ready to go to sleep(yes, I do sleep) and it seems a bit dark. I then notice that the computer I have mounted on the wall with a photo screen saver is not on. So I check the power on the compute stick and it’s working, power toggle the monitor and a pic displays for a second and then goes blank. I went to Fry’s and got a new monitor. First world problems…

For those who miss the Obama years, the Atlantic just posted a piece that could have been titled “I blame Obama.“*

At a moment when many of his former voters believe that America is facing a genuine democratic crisis, former President Barack Obama has been largely silent about what is happening in American politics. ……
    ……
The last time Obama was too timid, the Republicans roared. His party can’t afford to see Obama make that same mistake once again.

    Ah, nostalgia.

*ETA: The actual title is “Where is Barack Obama?”

tariffs received decent coverage this week

long time progressive economist Robert Reich was on MSNBC denouncing tariffs as regressive taxes that hit the working class and the poor the hardest.

I saw Chris Hayes say he opposes tariffs because they produce bad policy and bad outcomes.

I saw Maddow decry Drumpf for pulling out of TPP.

Yet when Obama was president each of these idiots were bashing him and pushing Wilmer’s pro tariff demagoguery and hysteria.

Now that he’s gone, the children want their dad back.

    @Baud: More from the article:

Given that Obama ended his term with high approval ratings and remains an admired figure within much of the electorate, he could use his standing to build support to check Trump, the most unpopular president in recent history. A vibrant party is capable of handling many voices, new and old, at the same time.

Much of what the writer says about Obama could also be said about Hillary Clinton, who isn’t mentioned once in the article. What a strange omission!

The press will give him great stateman fellations, and then in 2021 the next president will put in competent people and pay attention to intel and end up having to scramble to prevent a war because of whatever Cheetolini lets him get away with.

Every time I start to think there’s a magazine out there worth subscribing to, they come up with their own version of the Obama story. There’s a bitter old Cuban saying, “en pescaderia de blancos, el negro carga el jamo.” Literally it means “when whites go fishing, the black guy carries the bait” but it’s used by black Cubans in the sense of “whenever white people have an issue, the black guy will get the blame.” It’s playing out in our world beautifully. They harassed him for everything he did, attacked him for saying things that were self-evident, questioned his credentials at every turn, but he’s supposed to devote his life to saving them from their own folly.

His primary gripe with Trump, along with many NeverTrumpers, is that he’s coarse and impolite. They can exchange polite cocktails with Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III and shake their heads at the sad state of black culture and how it just DESTROYS colored youth, but can’t handle it when the schoolin’ gets stripped back and somebody goes full George Wallace. Makes them squeamish because it makes the consequences more immediate. Trump and crowds, jeez, that guy has a serious mental problem understanding that dynamic. He always, _always_ thinks that the crowd in front of him is representative of general public opinion. “I’m doing great, but I’m getting all these bad headlines,” Trump told a friend recently. A Republican in frequent contact with the White House told me Trump is “frustrated by all these people telling him what to do.”

This is all you need to know. This and this little nugget.

Another source said Trump has felt newfound validation after a CPAC straw poll last month showed him with a 93 percent approval rating.

A great president of the United States might be noted by his ability to make the best use of the advice of his staff. Trump wants to be obeyed and confused advice with attempts to rein him in.

Trump wants to be acknowledged as the greatest white man since the invention of whiteness. And so he lives in his delusion that he is doing great and that his approval rating is sky high.

And so, speculation about staff reshuffles are meaningless. It doesn’t matter who this president surrounds himself with because of the fundamental emptiness at the center.

The media, and more importantly, the political leadership of both parties, keep pretending that Trump is ultimately a traditional president who will do traditional president things. This is also a delusion.

ETA. Is the North Korea meeting on or off? I hear conflicting stories that Trump was merely babbling when he said it was happening. Anyway, look for increasing craziness if Obama gets an official invite to Prince Harry’s wedding and Trump is left twiddling his little thumbs.

    @chris

A favorite truly no-knead recipe, although I prefer it sans bacon and add some herbage (oregano or basil) instead.

    Beer, Bacon and Cheddar Bread

    3 cups all-purpose flour
    1½ tablespoons baking powder
    ½ teaspoon salt
    3 tablespoons honey
    1 egg
    12 ounces beer (room temp)
    3 pieces thick-cut bacon, diced
    1 cup shredded cheese

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Use cooking spray to thoroughly grease a 9×12 loaf pan.
Cook the bacon, drain fat and pat bacon dry
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl.
Lightly beat egg with honey, then pour it onto flour mixture and mix.
Add beer and mix into the batter, then add bacon and cheddar and fold into batter.
Spread batter evenly into the pan and bake for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the bread comes out clean.
Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack.
Cool another 10 minutes before cutting.

Optional: Brush top of loaf with melted butter at 40 minute mark, return to oven.

Wonder of Donny Dollhands will be tweeting some nasty comments about Britain or Saudi Arabia in the next day.

@Gretchen: As a divorced father, worrying about them was a waste of time. I just prepared myself for the worst. When we first got word, either my oldest misspoke or I misheard, that CJ went into the ambo “unresponsive”. Spent the next hour thinking he was in all likelihood dead. I went to a place inside me where there was no feeling. I’m not sure I could survive such a thing.

…thoroughly depressing me. Think I’ll go fix myself a nice vodka amobarbital cocktail.

Too early (7a West Coast) for vodka on a normal day … but we are so fucked, I may start pouring. If he’s going to manage everything with the skill and efficacy he showed with Korea, this is going to get bumpy. Fred Dalton Thompson is ringing in my poorly caffeinated ears.

    Nice going, Republicans and TeaShits.

@NotMax: Gods that looks good! Saved for the time when I can eat that many calories. Soon!

Today’s plan was to go to the little smoke for stuff to put in the freezer but I can’t go all that way without visiting the light. With 20-30 knot winds and snow/rain it ain’t looking good. (Go Fullscreen.)

Answering my own question perhaps US Companies can’t built jets without imported steel and aluminium which now means US companies have been priced out of the market thanks to Donny Dollhands.

I’m starting to think that, if your income is at or above 400% FPL, you should have to pass a citizenship test like they give to immigrants if you want voting rights, or a job in the news media.

Bones found in 1940 likely Amelia Earhart’s, study says.

Check out the Tighar folks for more information on the history of the search for AE on the former Gardner Island (I won’t try to spell the Islands current name). I was sold when they talked about the wreck of the Norwich City.

I bet they find parts of the plane before too long … if they stay funded.

@OzarkHillbilly: This reminds me of when I broke my back in Atlanta in 74. My old man came down and stayed for a few days. It was post surgery and there were a couple of other people here (I lived in Urbana in those days) so we had a party on the ward and watched the NCAA Hoops!

Not to rule out a political reason for the decision, but there’s a perfectly good non-political one. If it were you buying fighter planes for the Royal Saudi Air Force, would you want the long-delayed (and still not quite ready), overpriced, and unreliable F-35? The American military has spent three decades making a pig’s breakfast of the development project for that plane.
ETA: … And the Saudis may have been one of the international partners who spent those decades watching their share of the bill rising with little to show for it.

Happy and sad today. My husband’s blood work yesterday showed he’s still not needing any treatment for his CLL and hopefully it stays that way. One of my closest friends found out her much older husband’s prostate cancer is terminal; they have kids who are still in high school. She’s a few states away from where we live.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who is finding the Dump era to be a mental and physical time sink, I just don’t get much done because I’m spending too much time trying to keep up with the news and praying Bobby Three Sticks hits hard, fast, and completely. Its like a constant dark cloud, and the more I read the more stressed I get. I’m thankful for my husband’s continued good results and our two wonderful kittens; both bring me so much joy.

Can I just point out this is a terrible cartoon. Lisa Simpson is the conscience of the Simpsons – morally upright, thoroughly earnest, and gifted in intelligence, compassion, and artistic ability. Comparing Ivanka to her is terrible. And Bart isn’t academically gifted, but he is clever and quick witted. Again, absurd to compare him to Eric. And Homer, while being a bumbling ignorant boob, is rarely intentionally cruel. He is everyman, not a stupid Monty Burns. Again, it is a cruel and inapt comparison.

@Aardvark Cheeselog: I’m firmly of the belief that no one should be allowed to hold public office without passing the citizenship test (one can take it as many times as needed, but can’t be sworn in and perform duties until the test is passed). Of course, if that were the case America would still be waiting for the ShitGibbon to be sworn in…

Good catch on Brooks being a WFB disciple. Really he is a WFB clone with a more simpleton style. WFB, conservative racist asshole that he was, liked to dress up his speech with big words to make him sound authoritative and smart. He was neither. He and drumpf are opposite ends of the same spectrum, conservative racist asshole scum. Brooks is somewhere in the middle of that.

Definitely bread. Lots of types of beer breads. The beer sort of fills in for the yeast in kneaded bread so far as creating texture is concerned and the baking powder makes it rise.
