Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, man.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Republicans do not pay their debts.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

In my day, never was longer.

Here’s the updated chart of Trump’s false claims by week. Look at those last three months. pic.twitter.com/SjmBT7clLc

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 17, 2018

This afternoon in chronological order:
– President stands by Supreme Court nominee accused of crime
– Special counsel announces former national security adviser to be sentenced for crime
– Investigation of FEMA chief referred to prosecutors to assess possible crimes

— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) September 17, 2018

the WH will stand behind Kavenaugh but one thing you have to remember:
1. the WH is thinking more about Trump than Kavenaugh
2. the WH is not very competent https://t.co/YQ0DVC4BC3

— Greg Dworkin (@DemFromCT) September 17, 2018

… Republicans should be holding themselves to an especially high standard on this, and not only because they have nominated and elected a president who has had serious accusations of sexual harassment and sexual assault leveled at him. Politicians of both parties have, over time, been guilty of terrible crimes. But Republicans have a particular obligation here because their public-policy positions have put them on the side of those who oppose equality and full citizenship for women, and because they nominate far fewer women for elected office. To be sure: Many Republicans (including many Republican women) strongly dispute that they are in any sense anti-woman. This, then, is an excellent time for them to demonstrate that they really do consider crimes against women to be major offenses…

“The country?” Meaning, you & your rich white male friends?…

I had my first cardiac rehab session yesterday. Those people weren’t kidding around. It’ll be an hour, three times a week, for 12 weeks. I’ll be wired up while I do half an hour on each of two machines. Yesterday, I had orientation so I only walked for 25 minutes on a treadmill at 3 miles/hour with a +1 incline. The nurse orienting me explained some thing whose acronym I can’t remember (MEG?) but it had to do with your metabolism. I supposed to improve by 1 over the course of the rehab

Had an incident Friday that I’ve been chewing on ever since:
My estimator (woman) and a body man, in front office, trading “blsck” jokes. ( isnt it nice they no longer say N. ) i made my disgust known, and reply was ” Its ok, my g/f is black.” And back to jokes. I took a walk, as you can’t teach pigs to sing.
My question is this: the day before, I spent the morning in that office, with our regional trainer, a black woman. I know they would not make those jokes in her presence.
Why in mine? Because I’m white and therefore in the club?

metabolic equivalents, an estimate of how hard you are/can work, calculated from speed and grade on the treadmill. Lying in bed awake is 1 MET. Often a cardiac rehab program would like to see you able to maintain 9 METS but that goal can be different for a program as well as the individual.

What jumps out to me in RNC poll: “soft” GOP voters care more about Medicare/SS, funding veterans mental health services + reforming student loans than Trump agenda of tax cuts, border walls, ICE:

That’s why there’s this weird disconnect going on where Democrats are actually running on these economic issues and they get no coverage. With the exception of Dave Weigel. He covers their actual campaigns.

They’re running on these issues because the Democratic position is popular.

My only complaint this cycle is I wish Democrats would focus more on student loans. Trump and his low quality hires flat-out suck on student loans. There’s a huge target on their backs. DeVos can be the poster child. No one likes her anyway. It’s not a huge group, people who are really upset about student loans but they’re 1. young and 2. they probably vote. It’s a good investment.

    Seriously?

Uh oh. If she said it was small, what are the odds of seeing a dick pic from the president? He’d say it was his, but it would really be some male porn star who is especially well endowed.

@Immanentize: And we are seeing grandparents on the hook for their family’s student loans, when they need the $$ for retirement, and cannot make it anew.

Student loans is a great cause. The system does not have to be this way; it did not used to be. Europe handles it way better.

Having well educated citizens, and excellent colleges and universities, is in the public interest. For everyone but Republican politicians and their owners, I guess.

@Kay: Agree 100%. My experience canvassing in a remote corner of Maryland is that the four pressing issues are: protecting Medicaid and Medicare, tackling the opioid crisis, school funding and school safety, and bringing jobs to the county that actually have a benefits package. Local Dems are running on these issues. Trump’s name doesn’t even come up in the campaign literature.

Apparently Mayor Mike is making noises about running for Pres in 2020 as a Democrat.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Another vanity campaign. 2019 is going to be full of them. We’ll see how many drop out before the Dem primary debates vs how many will stick around to participate in humiliating “kids table” forums packed with also-runnings. Should be a nice blow to the ego for a number of politically-inclined celebrities. (At least Bloomberg’s been elected to something.)

    Well yeah.
Also for a pretty good sized portion of their respective populations, they seem to differ in finding glory in working with the populations that they serve. My friend who is now in the middle east thinks the people from the country he’s in are cool. How many cops think that the populations they serve are? On the whole it seems to me that cops are more at war with the people they are paid to serve than the military is.

@Formerly disgruntled in Oregon: Started off my birthday morning yelling at a Leftier-than-thou FB friend who was moaning about our governor John Hickenlooper exploring a 2020 Presidential run. And all of her friends piling on with the Hillary/moderate Dem hate. I mean, really, people? When we’ve got Trump in the White House, and other assholes in the Evil Richie Rich Club thinking they’re entitled to run for President, you have some nerve meeping about John fucking Hickenlooper.

@rikyrah: I almost always listen to Maddow as a podcast, but I can’t get through last night’s episode because of the replay of the Thomas debacle. It’s too painful to listen to those old white men fail and fail in the face of a brave woman. I really can’t forgive Biden.
