    The fact is that Donald Trump has been wearing a mask for a long time, like Eleanor Rigby “wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door.” He studied larger-than-life titans like George Steinbrenner and Lee Iacocca and invented a swaggering character called Donald Trump with a career marked by evasions, deceptions and disguises.

    The young builder was intent, as T.S. Eliot wrote, to take the time “to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet.” Early on, Donald locked in his costume for the masquerade, the look of a C.E.O. in the ’80s. His body armor was a dark suit, white shirt and monochromatic silk tie. His hair was a blond helmet, his war paint was orange.

    As Oscar Wilde said, a mask tells you more than a face.

    Dowd should know. She and other New York reporters helped Trump burnish this image and present it to the world. They loved him as the swaggering New York millionaire playboy. They knew what a petty little shit he really was, but gleefully helped him keep his true face from the public.

    And it was by no means only or mainly the New York Times that happily kissed up to Trump. It was a damn media cottage industry.

    Here is more of Dowd’s self-serving bullshit from a 2016 interview.

    Donald Trump used to answer Dowd’s phone calls but no longer will, she says, after she posed a number of tough, uncomfortable questions to the candidate, including what the consequences would be if a narcissist became president.

    “He got mad at me and said I wasn’t treating him fairly,” Dowd recalled. “He doesn’t know he’s a clinical narcissist, which is maybe one of the symptoms of clinical narcissism.”

    She’s upset that Trump won’t talk to her. Makes you wonder who is really the narcissist here.

    Tipping hat to the Thin Black Duke, even if he doesn’t like DKnight’s jokes, for his comments.  Something like, what white people need to do is to vote Biden.

    @Brachiator: I agree that Dowd is not an innocent bystander, she’s been an active participant in the damage to our politics. But she’s a complicated case; I give her credit for writing publicly that Colin Powell (and by inference, Bush and Cheney) was lying to the UN about Iraq. I don’t see an advantage in blowing past the complications.

    When Does was doing her book your, she talked about how early on she covered Trump for the society pages. She probably saw his racism and sexism up close and approved it, or at least have it a pass.

    It’s not that complicated. And she didn’t have an exclusive on Colin Powell.

    For anyone who does not know, Tuberville is a college football coach who was at Auburn for quite a stretch. In states like Alabama, successful football coaches rank a notch below Robert E Lee among  white voters.

    I’d expect Tuberville to win the primary and general by wide margins. Am I way off? Does Sessions have a chance?

    There is that. At Auburn, he beat Alabama six straight. He was also at Ole Miss and Texas Tech. I do not believe the in-state rivalry will hurt him since it’s been a while.

I do expect Tuberville to win the primary but I think Jones will show he’s an idiot whose only qualification is he supports Dolt45. It might be enough because Alabama is all in on vote suppression but Jones might just eke it out.

    Just read an email from the auto club of so california that they are sending me a refund of 20% of my car insurance premium between Mar. 16 and May 15 due to claims declining that much while we were socially isolating.     @Mary G: Traffic is nowhere near normal levels, I look at Google Maps and see green on all the freeways during what would normally be rush hour.  There’s more traffic than there was at the start of the Stay-at-Home order, but it’s nowhere near what it’d normally be.

    ETA: I’ll give you an example, I was planning on driving to Joshua Tree this evening(I woke not feeling well).  It tells me 2 1/2 hours to drive there; last year, on a Saturday, it took 5 hours.

    I would agree if it were, for example, a former head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs running in Florida, but Auburn is in Alabama.

    Here’s an ESPN article addressing this issue.

    So I guess some Alabama white people have to choose who they hate more. Tuberville for coaching Auburn to victory over the Tide or Sessions for insufficient slavish worship of Trump.
