Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I really should read my own blog.

Not all heroes wear capes.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

One of the under-discussed consequences of Trump constantly golfing is that the Secret Service needs to deploy militarized helicopters to patrol the airspace, so if you’re in DC you now regular see Apocalypse Now style chopper battalions defending the golf boy

Arlington National Cemetery was founded upon the family estate of Robert E Lee after the Union Army had confiscated it. Became a way to thumb noses at the Confederacy, burying dead in the backyard of the man responsible for killing them.

We’re going to hit 100,000 deaths in the US on Memorial Day, if the rate holds steady. When that milestone hits, Donald Trump will likely be golfing still.

The strange thing about him going to his golf course is that if he were a normal president, it really would not be seen as all that awful. They have to get outside, too. And exercise is good for all of us.

But he was such an asshole when it came to Obama’s golfing. And he was such an asshole about Obama’s handling of ebola. And he’s been so callous about 100k dead citizens in the last couple of months.

Ergo, he gets no benefit of the doubt, no breaks, no mercy. All that said, what I think is going on is that Biden et al will just bait the hell out of him over golfing, and trump will take that bait. He won’t be able to help himself. Just watch, he’ll be tweeting about the glory of golf this weekend, and that will lead to another round of criticism.

    Open thread? Patience pays off.

Ordered a 10-pack of masks via Amazon on April 22 to be sent to Mom in NY. Tracked shipment through the original delivery date, through the revised de4livery date, through the re-revised delivery date.

Per Amazon, shipment is lost. Then waited through the days they require in order to contact the seller (which i did, to no satisfaction), then the requisite number of days following that until a notice popped up today that I’m eligible for a refund via Amazon.

Clicked through that procedure and – voila! – two hours later received an e-mail that full refund has been processed and issued.

Oh but most of those are just forgotten 95 year olds in nursing homes! Or black people. So who cares! Gotta get back to work! Can’t live in fear! And any increases in cases are just because of increased testing; hospitalizations are way down and are a better metric! /s

I was an undergrad at UCSB when Reagan was president. The campus is right next to the Santa Barbara airport. We always knew when he was out to visit his house outside town because a couple Cobra gunships would circle campus until the motorcade left the airport.

It is strange how so many republicans seem to dismiss the death toll because so many suffered from comorbidities.

Then I remember how those same republicans rallied behind Michelle Obama when she wanted to do something about those comorbidities.

@Jackie: I suspect a lot of “everyone who will die was going to die anyway so hurry up and get it over with” thinking is going to become more mainstream. Tautologically correct up to the hurry up part, we are all going to die eventually, but pretty starkly inhumane. The “so I don’t have to be inconvenienced for you” subtext may remain less explicit, or not.

@Geminid: Good luck with that in the rest of the country, especially the Midwest and deep South.

The megachurches might just be the worst, with such huge groups cimi g together, lots of maskless crying, singing, hugging, and communal food, and  if that’s not enough to infect the congregation, how about those small meeting room “support groups” for those who are ill with chronic diseases or addictions? Nothing like cramming a bunch of at-risk individuals into a confined, poorly ventilated, ineffectively cleaned space without PPE in the middle of a pandemic to keep them “safe”. The mind boggles.

Add to that the fact that Ohio’s governor thinks that weddings and receptions can safely resume, as long as they are limited to the oh-so-easy to supervise and control number of 300 guests. That’s correct. 300 guests, in the middle of a ridiculously contagious, virulent pandemic.

An Alabama pastor and wife spread Covid-19 to at least 31 members of their congregation. Three of those members have died. The infected congregants have spread the disease to at least 20 more people in the community. The church was reportedly having children feed “offerings” to adults (no sanitizing of hands, obviously no masks or gloves or distancing), amongst other high risk behaviors. This took place well after solid information was available about how to take basic precautions to limit the spread of the disease.

During the stay at home order, local Catholic churches here did not hold Mass. That didn’t stop at least one large church, however, from allowing parishioners to come and go for “prayer groups”, to organize junk stored in the basement and spare rooms, to “dust and tidy the church” in groups , all done with no sanitizing protocols, no masks, no distancing, and no limits on who could participate. My 84 year old asthmatic MIL law was right in the middle of that nonsense, and she and the other church ladies were mad as hell when restaurants were ordered to do carryout only, because they couldn’t then go and congregate with even more parishioners at Cracker Barrel or Dunkin’ Donuts afterwards. She’d still be doing it if her children hadn’t actively intervened.

I don’t have much reason to believe that that sort of behavior will suddenly magically improve here, especially now that the easing of restrictions is creating a “we owned the libs and WON” mindset.

My hairstylist is refusing to wear a mask because people at her church are telling other congregants that they have “guardian angels watching over them, so they can’t get the ‘bug’!”, and that hugging other parishioners and holding hands at funerals and church services now is “a healing experience”.

Yeah. There will be no haircut in my future for a long, long time, and I fear  that many, many churches are going to serve as super-spreader locations.

@Geminid: Just to clarify, my snarkiness is in no way aimed at you. I’m a non-churchgoer, too.

I’m sure that there are some religious leaders who are smart enough and sincere enough in their concern for others to enforce safe behaviors. I know of a couple of Unitarian ministers, a rabbi, and an imam who are going above and beyond to keep their congregants safe and make them follow protocols to keep the church community safe.

However, the majority locally seem to be following the MAGA playbook. I don’t see any way that the careless behavior ends in anything but Covid clusters wreaking havoc in their congregations and in the communities that surround them.

@Mary G: Well, if my husband’s cousin’s 20-yr-old daughter is any example, she turned up with covid toes the other day and had to get tested (no results yet).  They just think they’re immortal, like most of the youts, and think that NO ONE IN THEIR CROWD could possibly be infected, so what are you fussing about, Mom???  Unfortunately, a virus doesn’t care.

@Keith P.: The next “milestone” of note (IMO at least) is the total number of U.S. military deaths in all the conflicts since WW2 ended 75 years ago. That number (added up from this site) is 102,684 – and the COVID-19 death toll will roar past that by Wednesday at the latest. Heckuva job, Orangecandyass!

@Kent: My husband JUST received 5 free washable masks while at dialysis.  Marked with the HHS logo and everything.  Label claims outer layer fabric contains silver and copper (no explanation why — look exactly like the ones made by American Giant – Maybe they are and are a result of some Fed grifter contract).  They are horrible — the classic one size fits none.  We call them “Jared Masks”.  They do fit me, so I’m making him some nice fancy cotton ones in a Star Wars print and an Apollo 11 patches print.

    @JaySinWA:

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): I don’t think they are missing the point at all. They are conflating co-morbidity with imminent death deliberately, but really are thinking these are useless nonproductive lives that are a drain on society. Eugenics in masks.

Quality-Adjusted Life Year is a somewhat more respectable way of looking at disease effects and the effectiveness of interventions. I am far from sold on the concept – it’s designed to be used “in economic evaluation to assess the value of medical interventions” & having worked for economists, I automatically suspect the ethics of anything they propose beyond the simple counting of money** – but at least it doesn’t pretend that (e.g.) a year of my mother’s life in her early 70s (when she was firing and decorating ceramics, sewing clothes for dolls and her kids & grandkids, gardening, & seeing to Dad in his retirement) was no more satisfying and meaningful, for her and everyone around her, than one in her late 90s (after dementia had taken an unbreakable grip, when she rarely recognized any of us). I guess my main objection to QALY is the cold-equation presumptions (that everything can be & ought to be broken down into dollars & cents) baked into the computations.

** “An economist is someone who likes to work with numbers but isn’t personable enough to be an accountant.” Dunno who said that but he deserves one of those bogus “Nobel Prizes in Economics” that only exist because the Swedish National Bank bribed the Nobel Foundation in 1968, at least as much as the overcredentialed imbeciles who usually get it (not looking at you, Krugthulu! :^D).

@Mary G:I know I shouldn’t be shocked by the hordes of young white people out drinking in crowds today. I still am. It’s breathtakingly evil.

And tomorrow there will be hordes of old white people congregating in churches, singing and the tops of their lungs in close quarters, and hugging each other.

And even more evil on Sunday!

They claim to be religious, Christian, love one another… but really, killing anyway, in spite of their “religion” ~!!~

    Hypocrites to the Max~!!~

And our “Leader” President Trump plays golf when we desperately need federal leadership — haha.

It is a beautiful spring morning here in the WV hills, and I am shaking off and on with anger – my own little co-morbidity.

Are you questioning that actual life means more than someone making life and death decisions based upon some idea that lives don’t matter, only money does? How non republican of you!

OK snark over, this concept of money is the be all end all of life is a huge, maybe the hugest pile of bullshit conservatives have. From this allows every one of their traits that make them hate, and from which they operate and which they have used to create hate and devision among their ranks, to support the concept that the means of production, the common people, are theirs to own. I also wonder if this is why all the white women are angry and fighting people serving them for not obeying them or actually telling them what to do?

@NotMax: We ordered some masks on Amazon that were due in a month, showed up over a month after the original delivery date.  :-/

I ordered a book from Amazon that was due May 15.  Waited a week more, still no book.  Their online tracking information was blank, said it was lost.  Ordered a replacement (for free), was due in 3 days.  The day before the replacement arrived, the original showed up.  I did the return paperwork to have UPS pick it up.  :-/

tl;dr – Add 100% to the estimated Amazon delivery time, and be pleasantly surprised if it shows up earlier.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Scott.

God, no.  It’s the other way around.  If they hate, if they consider others inferior and less than human, if they just like fucking other people over, it’s easy to go balls to the wall on money and declare it the arbiter of good and evil.  The vast majority of Republicans aren’t making a dime off their hate.  They’re just assholes, but they fight to the death for the rich’s ability to shit on anyone they want, because the ability to shit on the weak is their concept of good and is the right they want themselves.  From Trump to McConnell to Cruz to the MAGA trailer trash to the evangelicals to Romney to the so-polite-never-Trumpers who are not racist at all, no, but call the cops when they see a black person in their neighborhood, the whole Republican spectrum is in on that.

This also explains why they have about half of white women.  White women get to be the #2 slot in shitting on everyone else.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that the Mango Moron would be golfing. He is not capable of empathy. I am not sure he could even understand the optics of situation. He only worries about his needs and not anybody else. I am more interested in knowing who the other three people were in his foursome. They should experience public shaming if they are not as uncaring as he is.

Question for the hive collective.  If it is generally accepted that Diminutive Donnie wears lifts in his shoes to break six feet tall, does he wear lifts in his golf shoes or does he go without on the golf course?  Is this one of the reasons that there are very few people allowed around him when he’s on the course?

Also, does he shut the course down for the duration of his golf game?  You would think he’d want to maximize the take but I’m not sure the Secret Service would allow just anyone to play on the links while Donnie Dumbass is out there.
