My son’s favorite song these days is the theme song from “Happy Days” so I thought it might be a good time to raise some money for a Cunningham.
Cal Cunningham is a very interesting candidate, a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan, who has also served as a state senator. North Carolina is one of out best pick-up opportunities this cycle. Thom Tillis is awful and should be sent home.
I think it’s pretty likely that control of the Senate comes down to this race along with Montana, Maine, and Iowa.

My two cents: I liked the show better before they made it all about Winkler. That lasted for the first half-season.
Baud
The initial them song was “Rock Around the Clock.” I think that lasted one season (or half season as swiftfox mentioned). After they disappeared Rich and Joanie’s brother, they changed the theme to “Happy Days.”
ETA: The original Fonz was also more of a “hood” than the Fonz character eventually became.

I remember those days, when the kiddo would get fixated on a song. Eventually one learns to completely tune it out. It’s a survival mechanism that no doubt evolved over the centuries to protect both parents and children.
Godspeed to Mr. Cunningham.

Done, Doug–you don’t get enough appreciation for these!

When you lose Cilizza. . . .
This Republican senator has a wild idea about what voters will care about in November

Done, once more.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
Every time I see a Tillis ad, it is immediately followed by a Cunningham ad. I am constantly left wondering how the Cunningham campaign arranges that.
Old Dan and Little Ann
I read a book of faces article about Hapoy Days yesterday. They originally wanted Micky Dolenz to play The Fonz but he was too tall. Ayyyyyyy……….

@john b: I do, in fact, remember how good my life was in February, when I traveled out West to go skiing, and then on a nice, relaxing tropical vacation with my wife. And the memory of how easy life was then will certainly guide my vote in November. That may not be exactly what Tillis is anticipating, though.

@swiftfox:
Did the Fonz’s transition from edgy to cuddly happen around the time Mrs Cunningham started calling him Arthur?

Saw on Twitter that Bari Weiss is self-deporting from the NYT.
Nicole
I’ve been keeping track of my kid’s song obsessions from when he was little, figuring it’ll make for an excellent playlist to give him when he goes to college. “Last Train to Clarksville” will be immediately followed by “Gangnam Style.” :)
Yutsano
@Gin & Tonic: Oh good. She can final get the Fox News gig she’s been desperately craving.
Old Dan and Little Ann
The Fonz wore some sort of light windbreaker like James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. The powers that be thought a black leather jacket made him look like a criminal. When the show took off after a few seasons they decided to give it a chance.
A Ghost To Most
A school district in Missouri is requiring parents to sign a waiver in case children become infected with COVID-19 and die.
The “waiver of liability” from Hazelwood School District was shared on Tuesday by attorney Natasha Scruggs.
“I feel sick reading it,” Scruggs said.
The document asks parents to acknowledge that COVID-19 is a public health crisis and to relinquish their rights to hold the district responsible even if a student’s death is “caused by the negligence of carelessness” of school staff.

My DIL posted a meme that looks real but is a joke (I hope!). Its about preparing your child for school, and includes items like “talk to your child about how everybody dies eventually” and “encourage your child to make a will of their own.”

@Gin & Tonic: That’s good news. Buh bye, Bari Weiss.
JPL
@Gin & Tonic: Her resignation letter comes up short, because she blamed everyone except the readers of balloon juice for her leaving.
Elizabelle
@JPL: And — since Sulzbergers! — they will hire someone even worse to replace her.
Horrible woman.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: It’s funny (not really “ha-ha” funny), but I visited my grandkids last week, and my grand-daughter, aged 5, who would in normal circumstances be starting K this fall, was interested in death. I know it’s a developmental stage, but she was asking about various relatives, and wanted to know who/where my mother was, so we got into that.
Mike in NC
I recall reading that nitwit Thom Tillis was originally a Floriduh Man, but eventually landed in North Carolina and worked his way up the ranks of the state Republican Party. That just shows what a low bar he had to pass. Color him dead meat in November.

From Bari Weiss’s self-serving flouncing off letter: second paragraph:

@JPL:
What did we ever do to Bari Weiss that she would leave us out? My feelings are hurt.
Soprano2
I saw a story from the St. Louis paper that said Nicole Galloway, who is the Democrat running for governor, and Parsons the current governor are basically tied according to polling. Trump won this state handily in 2016, and it’s become a pretty conservative state (we were still considered a swing state in 2008). That more than anything tells me how bad Republicans have it this year. Of course, like a lot of Republican officeholders, Parsons’ response to COVID-19 has been mostly a shitshow. Just last week he appeared with a bunch of MO cattlemen with no masks and no distancing at all!
cleek
Cunningham’s commercials against Tillis are brutal. he’s got one running now that takes Tillis to task for saying that employees having to wash their hands is odious government overreach – and it’s set in a COVID19 context.
bam! pow!
Tillis’ ads are all “I’m fightin China cause they stole all our medical supplies!”
Skippy-san
And keeping Doug Jones seat in Alabama.

Thanks Doug. Just chipped in.
