    White House Security Chief Crede Bailey adds a lot imo, since he seems to have gotten sick before anyone else in the White House we know about and intereacted with a lot of people who subsequently became ill.  Press needs to follow up on his case today and establish his timeline.

    TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan is planning to remove a ban on overseas travel to China and 11 other countries next month, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Thursday.
    The 11 other countries and regions include Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam and Malaysia, the Yomiuri said.
    The Japanese government, which currently bans travel to 159 countries and regions, will recommend that travellers refrain from unnecessary and non-urgent visits to those 12 countries, the newspaper said.

    First world problems but Jeebus Reuters, is it that much trouble to report all 12 countries???? I can’t help wondering which 4 were so unimportant that they didn’t make the cut.

    Yesterday, China reported 0 new domestic confirmed cases and 0 new domestic asymptomatic cases, 11 new imported confirmed cases and 8 imported asymptomatic cases and 1 imported suspect case:

    • Shanghai Municipality – 5 confirmed case, 2 Chinese nationals returning from Ethiopia, 1 each from France and the US, and a Russian national coming from Russia; 1 suspect case, no information released
    • Chengdu in Sichuan Province – 3 confirmed cases (2 previously asymptomatic), 2 Chinese nationals returning from Iraq (via Qatar) and 1 from Nepal
    • Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province – 1 confirmed case (previously asymptomatic), a Chinese national returning from Indonesia
    • Xiamen in Fujian Province –  1 confirmed case, a Chinese national returning from the Philippines; 2 asymptomatic cases, 1 Chinese national each returning from the Philippines and Kazakhstan
    • Fuzhou in Fujian Province- 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from Singapore

    Malaysia’s Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced at his media briefing today that the Department of Prisons has drawn up revised SOPs for handling persons in its custody, to address the surge in new infection brought about by clusters in prisons in Sabah and Kedah. These measures include, among other things, testing and a 14-day quarantine for incoming prisoners, plus procedures to ensure social distancing when transporting persons in custody.

    Malaysia’s daily numbers. 375 new cases were reported today, for a cumulative reported total of 14,368 cases.

    371 cases are from local infection, including 29 non-Malaysians. 18 have a recent history of travel to Sabah. (A detailed breakdown will follow.)

    Four new cases are imported: all Malaysians, returning from Belgium (two) and India (two).

    18 more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 10,519 patients recovered — 73.21% of the cumulative reported total. 3,703 active and contagious cases are currently in hospital; 60 are in ICU, 20 of them on respirators.

    Five deaths have been reported today, all in Sabah, and the total is now 146 deaths — 1.02% of the cumulative reported total, 1.37% of resolved cases.

    Excluding the 18 who have returned from high-risk zones in Sabah, 271 local cases are in Sabah: six from the Ramai-Ramai cluster, five from the Laut cluster, three from the Benteng Lahad Datu cluster, three from the new Tujuh Serangkai cluster, two from the new Tanamera cluster, and 252 from miscellaneous screenings. eight cases are in KL, all from the Jalan Pantai cluster. 32 cases are in Selangor, comprising 12 from the Jalan Meru cluster and 20 from miscellaneous screenings.

    Five cases are in Sarawak, comprising three from the new Bah Arnah cluster and two from miscellaneous screenings. Eight are in Labuan, all from the new Bah Bangat cluster. Two are in Johore, both from miscellaneous screenings. Three cases are in Perak, two from the Bah Puchong cluster and one from miscellaneous screening. Four cases are in Terengganu, all from miscellaneous screening. One case is in Putrajaya, from the Selasih cluster. The one case in Melaka is from miscellaneous screening. And one case in Penang, from the remand prison cluster.

    Correction: the imported cases are all non-Malaysians, not Malaysians as I previously said. My bad.

    The five deaths, all in Sabah, comprise a 55 year old man with diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidæmia; a 75 year old woman with hypertension; a 57 year old man with diabetes and hypertension; an 82 year old man; and a 53 year old man with diabetes.

    Well, crap.  Cases in Germany more than doubled today, 4058 for a total of 310,144.  16 deaths for a total of 9578.

    It’s felt almost normal here lately, with everyone sitting outside to eat, but with the weather turning and what I expect to be another hard lockdown, it’s going to be a tough few months for restaurants.

    There were 14,162 new cases in the UK yesterday, about 400 less than the day before. Broken down by home nation,

    11,528 cases were in England (down by @1000)

    828 cases were in Northern Ireland (up by @200)

    1054 cases were in Scotland (up by up by @200)

    752 cases were in Wales (up by @300).

    Not good.

    Deaths – There were 70 yesterday. 65 in England, 3 in Wales and 1 each in Northern Ireland and Scotland. This is a return to the average after Tuesday’s lower number.

    Testing – 261,336 tests were conducted out of a capacity of 306,173.

    Healthcare – Over 3000 people are now in hospital with COVID with 410 on ventilators. Numbers continue to tick up in all nations.

    General – Nicola Sturgeon has announced new restrictions which include closing all pubs and restaurants in central Scotland (which includes both Glasgow and Edinburgh). Pubs and restaurants elsewhere can remain open but can only serve alcohol outdoors. Given the weather, this is, for all practical purposes, a closure. The First Minister has announced a support package to help affected businesses but this hasn’t prevented the pubs lobby from screaming loudly and the opposition from saying that the size of the package is too small. In the meantime, new restrictions are expected to be announced for parts of England in the next few days.

    Otherwise, the weather over the last week has been atrocious and my county library has re-instated fines for late library books.

    @Searcher: County judges in Texas are the equivalent of county commissioners elsewhere in the United States. They don’t hear cases, but they really like having “judge” rather than “commissioner” as a courtesy title.

    Christ I just want these assholes the hell out of my government.  Hoarse just posted a tweet by Senator Mike Lee saying “Democracy isn’t the objective; liberty, peace, and prosperity are. We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy can thwart that.” (Italics mine) By rank democracy I assume he means the fact that Democrats represent 15 million more voters than Republicans.

    I read these roundups every day and they give an excellent picture of what is going on across the world.

    If I have one criticism, it’s using Reuters for the news from Australia. We get these alarming headlines about an increase in cases in Victoria for instance when the numbers go from 5 to 11 in a day. That’s not 5000 to 11000, but 5 to 11. The situation here is under control as much as anywhere in the world. There virtually no interstate travel. Melburnians can’t even leave the city to visit regional Victoria. I can’t travel more than 5km from home. But the cases have come down from hundreds a day to a 14 day rolling average of under 10.

    I’d rather be here than virtually anywhere at the moment. So can we have some less alarmist headlines. How about using abc.net.au?
