Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Republicans got rid McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Glad to see john eastman going through some things.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Everybody saw this coming.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

White supremacy is terrorism.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Site Update: Good News

by WaterGirl|  November 2, 20208:30 pm| 63 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Site Maintenance

FacebookTweetEmail

I promised an update before tomorrow, and there’s some good news.

Here’s the site update thread from Sunday, if you want more details.

WordPress Search plugin – Yay!

The new code for the Search plugin was installed late this afternoon, and the site is being indexed as we speak.  The graph of Search plugin activity – before and after the new code was installed – is like night and day.  In a good way.  So I believe that one is resolved.  Happy dance.

?

The Custom Twitter Feed plugin – Boo!

I gave you a heads up that I would need to turn on this trouble-making plugin on at some point for the plugin developers to see the problem in action.  I turned it on today for them as requested, and we lived with the site slowness for most of the day, and they never f-ing looked at it.

We’ll get it figured out.  But that plugin will stay off until next week.  In case you missed the thread yesterday, that’s why you don’t see John’s twitter feed in the sidebar.

?

Impossibly slow site loading on some older iPads, sometimes – Better?  Or not?

My suspicion was that the WordPress search plugin issue was affecting iPads, particularly older iPads, more than other devices.

Now that the new code for the search plugin is in, we should know right away whether the two issues were related.  I know I can count on you to let me know either way, right?

If it’s not resolved, I’ll be in contact with the folks who offered to help with testing. NEXT WEEK.

?

Ads turned off until Thursday!

John has graciously agreed to turn off all the ads until Thursday.  So we get to be ad-free until then!

Open thread.

Love that the ads are turned off, I’ve been getting Republican ads like crazy on my phone, including advice from Pete Fucking Wilson about keeping Uber and Lyft drivers free from those pesky benefits like sick pay and healthcare.

First time it’s loaded immediately since I could remember — iphone 7.

It was loading so slowly I was opening BJ and then going off to another site to while away the time. So huge improvement.

Forgot about the time change and flipped over to MSNBC to see if Maddow had moved past a 45 minute introduction to a story and got (ugh) Chris Hayes.

Luckily the return to last channel button is in a convenient place on the ol’ remote.

It always amuses me when people say “6 million comments!  How could a computational device ever handle such loads!?!” Back in ye oldene dayes we knew how to optimize. Now nobody bothers until they have to.  Now they spend their time water skiing and collecting stamps instead of optimizing indicies.

Patrick Svitek (@PatrickSvitek) tweeted at 8:25 PM on Mon, Nov 02, 2020:

Message for anti-Trump Texans who may still be undecided on your race? Cornyn says straight-ticket voting is gone, so voters will have to evaluate individual contests, but “obviously my preference would be people come down the ballot and vote Republican the whole ballot.”

What kind of internals is Cornyn seeing? I figured our chances of beating him were similar to beating Mitch.

Also, to WaterGirl: I managed to take one mediocre photo of one cat and may have managed to upload to your dropbox. If it’s the black cat it’s Chenille, if it’s the grey one it’s Shiloh. All my tech is misbehaving, and I’ve trying to get this done all day between phone banking and fending off nine zillion texts from campaigns asking for more money. I finally figured out that I can text back stop. Feel free to not use the photo (if it’s Shiloh, it’s the same one as last year), and I will try to get a camera that wasn’t manufactured in 2008 and take photos for next year.

This is annoying.  Even Booman does it:

How to Tell if Trump is Going to Win Pennsylvania

Four years ago, Hillary Clinton lost the Keystone State by a mere 44,000 votes. Could Biden suffer the same fate?

Why can’t it be framed this way: How to Tell if BIDEN Is Going To Win Pennsylvania
