Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Bark louder, little dog.

… Mostly for that line under the Squatter-in-Chief’s petulant pout: Sarah Palin joins Trump allies in making false election claims.

In case anybody wondered why the six anti-democracy members of the Supreme Court suddenly found their spines, it’s one thing to be remembered for encouraging sedition, and a whole different thing to be remembered for encouraging walking punch lines.

Late Night Turkey Open Thread

by Cheryl Rofer|  December 11, 202010:56 pm| 59 Comments

This post is in: Birdwatching, Open Threads

Looks like we need a new thread. Fortunately, I have a fascinating link.

How Wild Turkeys Took Over New England

The turkeys’ subjugation of New England residents is a relatively recent phenomenon. Just 50 years ago, the Wild Turkey population in New England was essentially non-existent, and had been for over a century. Then, an extensive, coordinated effort to trap and transfer turkeys across state lines rejuvenated the population—a comeback lauded by wildlife biologists and agencies as a conservation triumph. “It was an all-hands-on-deck restoration effort,” says Chris Bernier, a wildlife biologist at the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. “It’s a fabulous success story.” But now, with turkeys practically running the show, agencies must find a balance between celebrating the Wild Turkey revival and ensuring that human and bird get along. “We’re at opposite ends of the spectrum from where we were 50 years ago,” says wildlife biologist David Scarpitti, who leads the Turkey & Upland Game Project at MassWildlife. “It’s gone from a conservation success story to a wildlife-management situation.”

The turkeys were moved into the Berkshires from New York’s Adirondaks. And nature took over from there.

Seems like turkeys are doing well everywhere, though. My sister in Oregon thinks they are increasing there too.

Open thread!

On The Road – Dagaetch – Election Respite, New Zealand Edition

Dagaetch

Many years ago I took a bit of a personal sabbatical and traveled around the world. One of my stops, and probably my favorite, was New Zealand. I spent a month there, driving around with a rented car, enjoying a place that truly does feel like a natural movie set. It was actually so beautiful that in some ways, I found taking pictures difficult – there was such an abundance of scenes that I couldn’t focus on specific compositions, and found myself just looking around with a smile on my face. Nearly every spot in the world has some form of natural or human-made beauty, but I can’t think of any other place where the beauty is quite so endless.

I arrived in New Zealand after 2 months in southeast Asia, mostly in cities. I was prepared for culture shock, but I wasn’t prepared for the utter peace that hiking in these open valleys would bring. At one point I simply sat on the ground and looked around, content to enjoy the serenity and allow myself, however briefly, to set my cares aside.

As expected. But they are going to weaponize all of this “election fraud” to work harder to suppress even more Democratic votes.

KEEP YOUR GOAT SMELLING ASS AT HOME

Within the past month, #COVID19 weekly hospitalization rates in every age group have reached record highs. This includes young, previously healthy adults. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/uvul03isgA

This is a fucking disaster and apparently I was wrong earlier this year when I predicted all this and said “at least this will be an opportunity for America to learn about the concept of exponential growth” because we haven’t learned a fucking thing.

Why is everyone so stupid and selfish?

Proud of my Attorney General:

Ken Paxton got tired of disenfranchising people in Texas so now he's coming for voters in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

I've joined 22 AGs in support of an amicus urging the Supreme Court to throw this lawsuit into the trashbin of history.

Things we won’t miss in 2021

This is sort of a lapsed tradition: a list of people or habits or other things that should fuck off in the upcoming New Year. COVID-19 and Donald J. Trump are at the top of MY list, of course, and yours too, I suspect.

But I’d also like to hear less from Malcolm Gladwell. Is it wrong to hope the dearth of paid corporate events killed his inexplicable career as a speaker?

I DO hope to see the inside of a pub again someday. I DON’T want to see any Gose-style beer on tap. If I were after that flavor, I’d just borrow the bartender’s sour, wet bar rag and wring it into my glass.

“New normal” — let’s normalize never uttering that fucking phrase again, shall we? Ditto “we’re all in this together.” Manifestly not!

What people, places, things, ideas, etc., would you like to see in the rear-view mirror as we speed toward 2021?
