Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Not all heroes wear capes.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Let there be snark.

How stupid are these people?

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Republicans in disarray!

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Have the photos in the Fall Colors series inspired you to send in your own?  If so, now’s the time.  Thanks. :-)

Mike in Oly

Some of the fall foliage photos I have taken around my hometown of Olympia, WA. The native trees here are not all that showy for all color, but the city trees like to show off.

Wednesday Evening Open Thread: The NYTimes Field-Trials Its Official Biden Hate-Stalker

This post is in: Biden-Harris 2020, Information Warfare, Media, Our Failed Media Experiment

I really, really hate this type of reductive framing where the media (& the 'left') just boil down someone with an impressive record to one single descriptor, which is of course the most negative possible framing.

Basically invalidated all the good accomplishments they've had. https://t.co/UaNwo5Fn8O

Sure, court stenographer Maggie Haberman may have provided four years of comfy-chair interrogation to the Trump Crime Cartel, but now that there will be a Democrat in the White House, the NYTimes is bringing back the snipers. And Politico alum Ken Vogel has been diligently laundering ‘troubling implications’ concerning the Biden family for years now!

This post is in: Election 2020, Georgia Runoff Races 2020, Open Threads, This Fight Is For Everything

This fight for the two senate seats in Georgia is a fight for everything.  Imagine a world without Mitch McConnel running the show in the senate.  Imagine that.  And let’s make it happen.

Lots of good information below – if you’re interested in learning more about Georgia and the organizing that helped turn Georgia blue.

I learned that Stacey Abrams is sharing some of the money that comes in to Fair Fight with some of the smaller organizations that have been on the ground for years – the ones that helped turn Georgia blue.  So fo folks who specifically want to give to organizers, that’s one more reason to give to Fair Fight rather than giving directly to the campaigns themselves.  Or want to do both!

Fair Fight provided a link to their events.  There are two new events: a training for both phone and text banking and one for phone banks for the coming weekend.

The New Georgia Project is a nonpartisan effort to register and civically engage Georgians.  It was founded by Stacey Abrams in 2010.

Georgia’s population is growing and becoming increasingly diverse. Over the past decade, the population of Georgia increased 18%. The New American Majority – people of color, those 18 to 29 years of age, and unmarried women – is a significant part of that growth. The New American Majority makes up 62% of the voting age population in Georgia, but they are only 53% of registered voters.

I think I need to start posting his daily briefings to balance out the firehose of garbage from the Impeached-Forever-Lame-Duck President we seem to have to suffer through on Twitter/FB/Media.

I realize this is minor compared to the horrifying display with Lindsey Graham, but she really, really needs to retire. It’s a pretty bitter pill to swallow that, if she were to get sick, her care would be so much better than the average 80-something year-old in pretty much any state in the USA. She should act as though she understands that.

Some Real Courage

by @heymistermix.com|  November 18, 202012:19 pm| 80 Comments

This post is in: COVID-19

The Dakotas are getting a lot of (well deserved) bad press because of their elected idiots and a bunch of allied COVIDiots, but there are a lot of very courageous healthcare workers there risking their lives in overcrowded, understaffed hospitals. Here’s one of them, Jodi Doering, an ED nurse, who got a few minutes of attention for this set of tweets over the weekend:

Going to ruin the USA. All while gasping for breath on 100% Vapotherm. They tell you there must be another reason they are sick. They call you names and ask why you have to wear all that “stuff” because they don’t have COViD because it’s not real. Yes. This really happens. And

Which is what I will do for the next three nights. But tonight. It’s me and Cliff and Oreo ice cream. And how ironic I have on my “home”
Hoodie. The South Dakota I love seems far away right now. pic.twitter.com/3e5Qg4yAuS

— Jodi Doering (@JodiDoering) November 15, 2020

Of course, like anyone else telling the truth about COVID, she received a lot of threats, and her reply shows what she’s made of:

If people think 72 hours can’t change your life, they have never tweeted from the couch while eating ice cream. I debated on locking down my Twitter. You know, death threats and stuff. I have worried about the safety of my two strong, independent daughters. But if ever there was

And don’t be a Twitter Dick. ✌?

— Jodi Doering (@JodiDoering) November 18, 2020

Here’s her interview on CNN. Really worth a watch, especially since I timed it to cut out Dollar Store Sarah Palin’s (Gov. Kristi Noem) stupid comments. And, by the way, that’s a real South Dakota/North Dakota accent. Marge on Fargo had a rural Minnesota accent.

Precautions Work

by @heymistermix.com|  November 18, 202010:22 am| 42 Comments

This post is in: COVID-19

Monroe County (Rochester) New York is trending towards becoming an “orange zone” (average 4% positive rate on a 7 day rolling average). This would mean that schools would be required to go online only. But, as part of being a “yellow zone”, we are required to test 20% of the in-school population, and right now the positive rate in schools is 0.14% on a significant (~3650) number of tests.

This means, put simply, that COVID precautions work. Kids in the districts being tested are going to school daily with masks and distancing. They’re not coming to school obviously sick, and they’re not spreading it if they’re not obviously sick. Based on this finding, our county public health commissioner is going to recommend that schools stay open even if we become an orange zone.

The sad part of this is that the testing isn’t happening in the mostly brown, low-achieving Rochester City schools, because they’re online, for a variety of reasons that include total chaos in the administration after the last superintendent basically hid a $60 million budget shortfall. Our mostly white, high-achieving suburban schools are being tested and doing well, even though the suburban towns where they’re located have just gone through a post-Halloween spike. The kids who can least afford to miss school are being hurt the most.

Well, I guess it could be worse — they could live in North or South Dakota.
