A friend from college sent me this, and while it hurts too much to be all the way funny, I have to confess, dear reader…
I laughed:
I’ve got a longer post cooking about the fact that the GOP is the New Shimmer of politics: both the party of treason, and one that ideologically and intellectually can’t actually do government in the 21st. c. world. But that’ll have to wait until I get my syllabi done and/or another front-pager does it sooner, briefer and better than I would.
In the meantime, this is the thread in which to let the full Jackaltariat gift for snark, mean humor, pitiless ridicule and everything else delicious, rain down on the enemies of the Republic.

I question the integrity of the clinical trials that produced that age rating in such a short period of time. Did they really give that set to a fully representative panel of 5 year olds demonstrating that they achieved no better results than a control group? Since Wednesday? I don’t buy it. I have Scottish ancestry and I saw the Braveheart posters and I said ” I am not seeing that movie.” William Wallace died in 1305. Woad facepaint was around the Roman invasion, circa 300. Kilts weren’t until th 1590s.
Nothing about that movie was historically accurate except his name and the dates. Mel Gibson’s accent is the least of their problems.

I read this as the consensus coming around to mythologize their new savior for 2024, but Pence has the personality of a tape dispenser, and all his Democratic opponent would have to do is show a clip of Twitler saying something stupid like the bleach and UV in the body followed by a clip of Pence talking about “his great leadership,”

I got a nice reply from Senator Markey’s office in response to my email of yesterday re accountability and impeachment. The reply said, amongst other things,
“The insurrection that took place on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021 was an assault on our democracy. President Trump fomented and promoted it with lies and conspiracy theories about voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. He bears responsibility for the attempted coup and defiling of the Capitol. President Trump should be removed from office immediately, whether by impeachment that can also bar him from holding office again, or through the process for removal by the Vice President and Cabinet under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
I am deeply saddened and outraged by this attack on our democracy and the culmination of four years of disregard for our Constitution and its principles. There must be accountability and justice. Those who committed these acts of sedition and domestic terrorism must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We must also investigate the failures of law enforcement that allowed this attack to happen and take the steps necessary to ensure that it is never repeated.”
I am happy and proud to have supported Senator Markey both in the recent primary and in the general election.

My set of Lego mass spectrometers agrees with you. They were a huge hit when one of the manufacturers gave them away at a conference, and the Lego artist making a life-sized Lego mass spec was, if anything, even more popular. Apparently it was the engineers who insisted that a Lego theme would be popular over the objections of the marketing people. Score one for the engineers.

“We had an outline and George changed everything in it,” Kurtz said. “Instead of bittersweet and poignant he wanted a euphoric ending with everybody happy. The original idea was that they would recover [the kidnapped] Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”
The discussed ending of the film that Kurtz favored presented the rebel forces in tatters, Leia grappling with her new duties as queen and Luke walking off alone “like Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns,” as Kurtz put it.
Kurtz said that ending would have been a more emotionally nuanced finale to an epic adventure than the forest celebration of the Ewoks that essentially ended the trilogy with a teddy bear luau.

Since this is repite-ish, I wanted to share some feelings, thoughts, etc. that I have been having that are not really politics related. If you aren’t interested in someone’s inner musings, move on. I won’t mind.
As most of you know, the Wednesday before New Year’s, I went to a special clinic run by the health system I go to specifically to be evaluated for Covid due to a cough, shortness of breath and a couple other minor symptoms. I was given the rapid test and informed I was positive and should go to the ER to be admitted as my O2 level dropped when I was ambulatory. It was not until 5 days later that I found out my sample had been also evaluated or tested or whatever they call it (lamh, where are you) and found out that it was, in all likelihood, a false positive and two days later confirmed that I was, indeed negative.
Nonetheless, for 5 days, from a psychological point of view, I was positive. Keep in mind, I am 73+ years old and for 53+ of those years I was a smoker, stopping just shy of two years ago. I was, and am, a high risk person. I have spent the last couple days looking back at those days and looking at my reactions to what I was dealing with and the consequences.
Without a doubt, the hardest, most painful part of it was not when I received the positive result but 30 minutes later as Mrs. Japa dropped me off at the ER. We realized she wouldn’t be allowed in with me so she was going to drive on home. We arrived at the ER and sat there a second, looking at each other. We couldn’t hug or kiss. I could barely talk. We bumped elbows, I got out of the car and started walking away. After two steps, I turned, we looked at each other, blew a kiss to each other, then she started driving away and I walked in. At that moment, we could not be sure we would ever see each other again.
As most of you know, I was not admitted as my O2 level was not low enough. So I spent the next several days, primarily in bed. Taking O2 level readings, monitoring how I felt and if I could take deep breaths, etc. My symptoms had begun on Monday and I knew the 7 days mark would be critical as that is when many people start to crash.
Somewhat to my surprise, even knowing that if I had Covid I was very high risk, I was never afraid of dying. Not that I was sure I wouldn’t die, but that I wasn’t afraid of the prospect. I used my time mentally writing letters to my 2 sons, to each of my 6 grandchildren and, of course, Mrs. Japa.
I spent a lot of time here, though not commenting for the most part. This place has always been a humbling place for me. I consider myself relatively intelligent but the wisdom, knowledge and intelligence on display here awes me. I found myself hoping I would make it to Biden’s inauguration to have something to celebrate before I go. It was weird.
And then, I no longer had Covid hanging over me, just a nasty case of pneumonia. Relief, yes, but the experience had clarified my thining on some things, a few of which the fellow jackals will regret.
First of all, I am still going to write those letters, and the recipients will receive them now. Originally I was going to have them delivered after I do die (I am, after all, not immortal, I don’t think). But I have decided they should know my feelings now. We are not a highly verbally expressive family, though hardly cold to each other. But I remember how, when my FIL died less than 2 years after we were married, I wrote a letter to my father expressing feelings we had not shared in person. When he died only 6 months later my mother expressed to me that that letter meant a lot to him.
Secondly, I am probably going to express my thoughts and opinions here more often. I am not an expert in anything but I ain’t no dummy either. So get used to it.
I am still going through this period of self assessment, but I have to say I realize that if someone had asked me how I would respond to being diagnosed with Covid before hand, I am not sure I would have been accurate in my response.

They were there for Mike Pence as well. Dude is still stupidly standing by Chump instead of invoking the 25th ammendment
They literally were saying: “Find Pence…Hang Pence”
SMH…he must know he will NEVER be safe even when Chump leaves office. But he standing by his man til the bitter end…dumb azz

Well at least they aren’t talking about defunding the police.

Here’s the scene that box captures, unfortunately for them very close to how they really are: Four-year-olds playing a first-person shooter game in their sugar-addled brains, exclaiming look mommy I can poop on the congressman’s chair! Randomly switching through other stunted-development drag-soldier personas as they rush through doors/floors, amazed how much they must look like big boys/girls/whatevers who snuck onto an IQ-restricted amusement park ride. Snapping selfies and vids in amazed wonder at how easily they have conquered the world! Bwa ha ha! Trogdor, the burninator returns! Thundercats, ho!

No One of Consequence
@japa21: Well said. With no hint of sarcasm: Thank you for sharing.
I too comment rarely-ish, because so many here are typically so far more eloquent or snarkier than my meagre skills will ever be.
That said, these are Strange Times indeed. A case can be made for an entirety of a Nation with PTSD. I am glad you are well. I am glad you had the chance to experience what you did, even the bad, scary parts, if the result was learning. By that, I mean specifically learning again, or perhaps a quick refresher course, on what really matters to you.
My advice, show the people you love that you love them. Tell them too, and let them know how much they matter to you. We could all do with more of that, receiving and the giving. Start with the giving.
You’re a good person. Among good company.
Peace,

@Anya: Probably explains why the other tweet (the one Cheryl embedded) was deleted, it was spreading false information. Which doesn’t explain why Jr’s account is still active…
I wonder if Twitter has a statement prepared, in which they blame all the suspensions on an unspecified algorithm. “It’s not really our decision, the algorithm detected too high a percentage of lies, threats, and attempts to incite violence and shut off the account.”

@japa21: Hey. Thanks.

Dinner tonight. Spouse sneers at leeks because “brit” but braised leeks with rice and tilapia make an excellent meal.

Apparently there would be more benefits (to us) of impeachment which I hadn’t heard of–Trump would lose his $200K/year pension, his million dollar a year travel allowance, his secret service detail. (As well as the ability to run for office again, which has been mentioned here.) Cool.

I know Apple, and I believe Google, can remotely delete apps that are malicious. Apple has done this a couple of times for apps that are clearly malware.
So normally, if you have the app the app will stay on your phone, but if you delete it you can’t reinstall it. Apple/Google will need to determine if the existence of the app is itself of sufficient danger to remotely delete it.

@CaseyL: The money quote from Forbes:

@debbie: Yum! I just used the last of my garden leeks in a chicken stew and a thick barley & lentil soup. Figured all I was doing was checking back and forth online to obsessively watch developments, creative thinking was pretty much going nowhere. Also have had a rich chicken stock simmering since 3 PM. The local coop sells the bones from one of the free-range producers. It’s like 20º on the porch, good night to cool it off fast. The freezer will be well stocked for awhile.
Dan B
@japa21: That’s quite the saga. During AIDS I had several scares. Seeing so many people die young in a country where the majority of the population didn’t care or were actively hostile seems like history rhyming. It forced many people out of the closet so many people saw how ordinary most gay men were. I wish that many people will be moved to share their experience of COVID and their anger with the deniers. There are too many people who have to have their prejudices confronted directly and firmly. It must be done or we keep repeating the pattern.

Chetan Murthy
@Roger Moore: Oh hm, I’d think that if someone is perma-banned, then if they pop up with a different handle, once they have posted enough to be identified as that perma-banned person, the new handle gets locked, until the owner can prove (haha) they’re not that person. I mean, otherwise, Shitler creates two new accounts: “Shitler” and “Shitler-pointer”. “Shitler-pointer” tweets regularly, telling you what Shitler’s current Twitter handle is. That current twitter handle tweets all the treason; when it gets blocked, Shitler just creates a new handle and voila, business-as-usual.
Or at least, I’d think.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Shrimp and grits is wonderful. Make grits with a bunch of cheddar cheese grated in. Marinate the shrimp with Cajun seasoning (I used the Penzey’s blend). When the grits are cooked, nestle the shrimp on top and cover. Let cook for a few minutes. When pink – eat up! I don’t stock grits at home, so I’ll usually make it for the family when visiting. My mother, before they moved to assisted living, kept a pantry that invariably had some fancy gourmet grits nestled in the back.

I have been wanting to correspond with people more; I mean literally, hand written, even if just short notes or buying nice cards. Recently, while cleaning out some files, I found a bunch of hand written notes thanking me for custom calligraphy pieces I had done for people years ago. Those people had been kind enough to enclose a little note with their checks even if just on a piece of scrap paper. Twenty years later there was proof that I’d done something meaningful to someone; it was a sweet find. So I will use your comment as an extra motivator to go do this.

The first Republican said, “How did the Democrats steal the 2020 Presidential election?”
Peter replied, “There was no theft. Biden won fair & square.”
The second Republican turned to the first & whispered, “Wow, the conspiracy goes a lot higher than we thought!”
Peter said, “I heard that – and you’re both going to Hell.”
