I know it SEEMS like it’s going to be hard to teach real American history in Florida, but you just have to be a little creative and lean into Trumpist doctrine.

Parson Weems’ career as a literary camp follower proved that historical hagiography can be profitable, and by their great god Mammon, modern ‘conservatives’ are determined to make pious lies more profitable than unpleasant truths once again…
Like hiding vegetables in your kids’ food, just hide little nuggets of actual history in Tuckeresque rile-up-grandpa blather.

As I see it, when Florida requires public schools to teach that America was founded on the principles of the Declaration of Independence, that means they are requiring the schools to teach that Lincoln was absolutely right in saying the Civil War war was fought in order to preserve a nation “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” So they must uncompromisingly teach the righteousness of the Northern cause, and the utter depravity of the Confederacy for treacherously rejecting those principles. Maybe begin each school day by ritually spitting on the rebel flag.

@jeffrey kramer:
I think they’re working from the originalist interpretation of the Declaration that specifies how the new young republic was conceived as a White Man’s Country, so the Confederates were actually the real patriots back in the day and why you Yankee snowflakes gotta play the race card every time, huh?

@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: Hopefully his bleached head-ferret keeps him in good spirits.
JWR
Haha! Dana Carvey on Colbert’s THE Late Show (now with audience!) Good stuff.
jeffrey kramer
@Tony Jay:
But “the revolution was fought to make it safe for white men to own slaves” is one of those CRT lies which are explicitly forbidden in Florida classrooms! So it would be a little too blatant an exercise in doublethink if they tried to fall back on that… wouldn’t it?
opiejeanne
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: Holy heck! That suit looks like shit, and there’s no excuse for that. This looks like the same suit he wore recently that caused so much speculation that he had the pants on backwards.
Tony Jay
@NotMax:
“Abe Lincoln. Che Guevara. Karl Marx. George Lucas. The beard as outward expression of tyrannical ideology – Discuss.”
@jeffrey kramer:
“Ah was not indulging in CRT indoctrination, Your honour. Ah was just exposing young minds to the real history that Liberals have tried to bury under decades of Marxist lies. An anyways. Our Founding Fathers wouldn’t have had to make a country for White Men if Those People hadn’t been so ungrateful an barbaric, would they? Case. Made.”
mrmoshpotato
@opiejeanne:
Shit never asked to be compared to that rumpled, baggy garbage! (And now to talk about the suit itself.) ?
Bruce K in ATH-GR
@mrmoshpotato: Hey, excrement is useful! I’ve always felt that a better comparison to TFG would be corium slag, which is useless and extremely hazardous to be around.
mrmoshpotato
@Bruce K in ATH-GR: You’re agreeing with me.
mrmoshpotato
@JWR: Yeah. Dana Carvey was good. But Jon Stewart needs to be smacked for his epibullshitologist take on COVID-19.
Anne Laurie
If TFG’s no longer wearing body armor every time he appears in public, that’s gonna change how his suits (don’t) fit. There’s also speculation that he’s been losing weight, possibly as a result of surgery, which would explain why he ‘disappeared’ for a few weeks & came back looking haggard & unwell.
Either way, you know he’s too cheap to buy suits that actually fit him now — assuming he could find a decent tailor *without* putting the money down in advance.
And, of course, there’s also the sad truth that TFG looks in the mirror and sees one of those thirty-years-younger, impossibly-fit-and-attractive images that decorate his Florida resort, not an elderly man in dubious health…
JWR
@mrmoshpotato: I didn’t catch much of Stewart’s schtick. It’s just been quite a long time since I found him very funny. Has he picked up a new line of epibullshitology about Covid lately? (OTOH, nevermind. I’ll watch it later today.)
OzarkHillbilly
@opiejeanne: He slept in it, hopefully under a bridge in a cardboard box.
David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch
@Anne Laurie:
Any rumors on what kind of surgery?
JWR
@Anne Laurie:
Funny, because those pictures of him gettin’ it on with Jeffrey Epstein back in the ’90’s, with his bushy, probably dyed, (or maybe not?), eyebrows, tell me that he’s never been a very attractive individual. But then, I’m a dude, so what do I know? What say you, ladies? TFG: attractive or disgusting?
prostratedragon
@JWR: To me he always gave such an impression of a spoiled rich brat that I wouldn’t have cared how he looked.
MagdaInBlack
@JWR: If we could take away every personality trait that makes him tfg, he would, at one time, have been a moderately attractive man. Since we cannot do that, he is and always has been just plain smarmy.
I pick B: disgusting.
Anne Laurie
Divided between ‘heart bypass, after an(other) infarction’ and ‘gastric bypass, so he’ll be thinner when he runs again / hits the talk circuit.’ Either’s possible, neither’s been reported by any reliable outlets — it’s all twitter chatter, repeating other social-media chatter, aka ‘wishcasting’.
David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch
@Anne Laurie:
I had a family member who had bypass, you spend 3 to 6 days in ICU and then another week to two in an assisted living facility or home healthcare. The hard part is it takes 3 months for the sternum to heal and you’re not allowed to use your arms. He hasn’t been off the golf course that long.
I could see Dump doing liposuction, but not gastric bypass because it would restrict his gluttony.
leeleeFL
@jeffrey kramer: I am fucking there for it! I still have one GrandBaby in the clutches of the Floriduh so-called”education system”. Anything that would help is welcome!
Chris Johnson
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch:
That guy’s gonna die. Either of natural causes, or Putin will make better use of his corpse. Nobody is going to help him, nobody is going to save him.
Remember, reality exists. We’re facing big problems but some of the worst problems are absolutely pyrrhic causes: in order to keep a political party worked up to the point of terrorism against a largely boring and centrist opposition, you have to damage them, damage your own people to keep them upset.
Normalcy, calmness and time are not the allies of these people. In some ways we’ve got to protect ourselves but in other ways we just have to STALL in order to make them wreck themselves.
We just have to stall, to see Trump die horribly. He cannot handle what’s happened, and is surrounded by enemies, and I don’t think he has Putin’s support or attention anymore. He is more useful to his Russian masters as a martyr. He’s gonna die.
Albatrossity
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: It’s sad that he doesn’t have Hope Hicks around to steam and press his pants for him these days.

@opiejeanne:
Were The Traitor still living in NYC, I’d note that Jeopardy!‘s donations this week are going to the Bowery Mission.
I look forward to the day that the only “employment” The Traitor can get is “cleaning” windshields at whatever Skid Row area he inhabits.
Bostondreams
As a Florida educator, this is just all massively depressing.
boatboy_srq
@JWR: Disgusting. At least since the age of 12. Have you seen any of the photos from his Studio 54 days? The smack was not kind, nor would it have made a difference if it were.
boatboy_srq
Unpossible. TFG was, is and shall ever be a target. It’s because he’s so wunnerful.

I love this historian’s take on teaching the “1836” project in Texas.
Boris Rasputin (the evil twin)
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: He usually looks like he’s wearing Rodney Dangerfield’s old suits.
Wonder if he enjoyed his last birthday unindicted.
WaterGirl
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: “Did you sleep in that suit?”
WaterGirl
@opiejeanne: I wonder if he can no longer work a zipper, so maybe they made him a suit with pull-on pants?
WaterGirl
@Albatrossity: I could have happily gone my whole life without having that image in my head.
I will also quibble with the framing of the article – that he MADE HER do it. She chose her life with Trump. She broke it, she owns it
edit: I see that I am talking to myself. never mind.
