We have our archives back.. All of it. Watergirl and I have seen them, been in them, and it appears to be all there. Next week we are going to discuss a plan on how to merge everything from this site, the archives, and the home away from home.

Additionally, I have purchased software to back up the site ourselves, and Bizbudding is creating as way for us to easily download a backup ourselves. I’m going to buy another solid state drive and just download a hard copy every couple of days.

In the future, we are also going to get a second hosting site that we will never use, but have host us in case anything like this happens again, so we will have our current hosting and their several backups on different cloud servers, my manual backups, and a different hosting site independent of those two that none of you can access. So all bases will be covered.

We’re going on a year since the last fundraiser, so we will probably do one in a bit, but I will keep you posted.

Again, great news and I am very relieved. We got the family jewels back.

    Great news!

    Not to make more work, especially not for WG, but please think a bit about whether it makes sense to dump everything into the active dB or whether it makes sense to have a small active dB (e.g. the current year or two) and a larger archive dB (or even flat-file dB since it won’t be changing) that people can look at when they want to see some history (years 3-eleventy-seven) without dragging the site down.

    Just a thought.   :-)

I saw both 3xxDC and BB had their normal sites back up a couple of days ago, so I was curious if something had moved and if the archives had been successfully retrieved. Did the target of the attack pony up? Or was there another resolution? I’m so curious about the details. But congrats to all and thank you for the hard work, especially you, WG.

    This is way, way better than rebuilding WordPress databases from the Internet Archive version. Your backup and DR design sounds pretty good. I would add a periodic DR test — there are hair-raising stories of organizations that did not realize that some configuration change somewhere had compromised their recovery plan until one day…

    I’m a little appalled you would have to pay for a backup site to swing to in a disaster, that hosting company should have had that. It’s a standard in the business.
