The Empire was a lot simpler: rule by fear, kill without remorse, incidentally providing a modern cultural example of Machiavelli’s warning that if you can’t get the people to love you, fear works as an alternative, but you absolutely do not want the people to come to hate you.

One answer is obvious and right under everyone’s nose.
In a clip of an interview with a right wing news outlet, Trump angrily asks if anyone expected him to sit down for hours reading classified documents or hiring someone to sit down for hours to read classified documents?
We know that Trump is too lazy to read. We also know that with Trump, an accusation is a confession. So yeah, he hired someone to read classified documents.
A clip on MSNBC provides more answers. Trump is to crass and too stupid to care about a Trump presidential library. Also he is all about immediate gratification. The quick buck.
And so sure enough in one of his hotels there is a bar called 45. Inside along the walls and in cases are photos, memorabilia and at least one of the empty Top Secret memo covers.
I will bet in some of his restaurants, the idea is that guest would be handed a Top Secret folder with a menu inside it.
That’s the kind of guy Trump is.
He is probably also working on a new TV series called Presidential Apprentice. Contestants would read copies of classified papers as part of team challenges.
And a few documents were probably sent to Trump’s best buddy Putin.

As much as I loved Trek, I don’t think the showrunners depicted the Klingons well. It was clear that the writers didn’t care for Klingons and never showed how their Empire actually worked. But this was almost OK since you rarely saw any of the Federation, apart from Star Fleet vessels.
But fans loved the Klingons and fed off their leather biker alien Viking persona and the ultimate warrior posturing.
Later, DS9 was much better at depicting working evil empires in their depictions of the Cardassians and the Dominion.

The DOJ’s investigation may be in part reverse engineering, so to speak, aimed at establishing through legal process facts they already know (of course they had to secure the documents too).
This is one reason I’m not especially concerned about how soon the grand jury hands down indictments. I want them to develop a fuller story about the involvement of trump and his henchmen. This story may turn out to be far more devastating than what we know now.

@Shalimar: in the old days fifty years ago, someone (human) did page layout—where on the page, how much space, size of headline for each story. News stories were written so the most important information came first. If the reporter had written an eight-column-Inch story and the page layout allowed six column-inches, the bottom two inches was cut—no rewrite. The size of type and number of lines for the headline was specified, and in those days the letters had different widths, so if you wanted to use a “w” it took the most space, and an “I” took the least. Working on the copy desk, you had to come up with an appropriate title for the story that also fit the space and line layout, and you didn’t have much time to do it. Headlines were an art in those days. That’s how headlines got “jab” instead of “shot” or “injection”.

But given his aversion to reading it would not surprise me in the least if he has no idea at all what is in any of them.
All of which in my mind makes it all worse, because some of the people around him surely do and they already have all kinds of motivations.

What really chaps my ass is the hiring spree these assholes went on “in anticipation of the ‘inevitable’ Republican wave” coming in November. Now, the Democrats are favored to hold the Senate (at least from where I’m sitting) and the House is toss-up, with trends heading towards the Democrats.
If you’re shocked by this turn of events and watching politics is your day job, you should just quit and go make (or just drink) wine in Oregon. I was saying this last year, when they started writing the Democratic majority’s epitaph, and I have a day job and a 3 year old. We KNEW that a major rollback on abortion rights was coming this year, at minimum. We KNEW there was more to come out about January 6. We had just witnessed how unforeseen things could all of a sudden become the most important story in the world for YEARS.
And yet these stupid, lazy assholes just assumed “ho hum, back to the old cadence, actual events don’t matter”.

I have a new theory on who tipped the FBI off as well: I’m on team ‘Trump shows them off to feel like he’s still president’ and the tip-off came from someone he gave a signed classified document to. It is SO easy to imagine him doing that and the recipient being horrified. Yes, there are people sure he can’t be so bad until he gives away national secrets right in front of them. Or the recipient just didn’t want to be legally liable.
Elizabelle
@OzarkHillbilly: Everything is supposition at this point. Which is why brachiator’s blithe assertion of Trump’s “proven” reasons for retaining classified material set me off.
Please do not explain away, by virtue of mental and personality quirks, what might have a darker reason for having occurred. Why be helpful in furthering a false narrative?

@Kay: If I had to guess it’s the classic “he’s not doing it the right way or for the right reasons” sure Biden is not looking for fights and is winding down a lot of the dumber ones but he doesn’t come out and say things like “The American Empire is worse than Hitler!” so it doesn’t count. And he’s not going to cut the DoD budget by 95% etc. etc.
So really the classic if it’s not exactly what I want it’s not only not good enough it’s worthless.
Probably a side order of only being able to view the government as the bad guy so not really able to adapt when the government starts doing things they want or stops doing things they don’t want it to do as the case may be.

Biden is a convert. He veered from the Democratic version of “hawkish” to something else between 2001 and 2009. One would think an “antiwar” faction would find that worth mentioning.

There was a story a few weeks ago that word had gone out among trump’s confidants that they should stop talking to Meadows. And before he clammed up, Meadows provided the J6 Commitee a lot of materials. Even then he may have been conflicted in his loyalty to trump.
I think Meadows was more of an opportunist than a fanatic like Roger Stone. Meadows can see that he basically ruined his life when he gave up a safe Congressional seat to take trump’s Chief of Staff job. Now it may not be a question of whether Meadows will serve prison time, but rather how much.

Tis funny, I was in a crowd of half a million or so people protesting the impending Iraq war in San Francisco with my wife and my then 4 year old daughter back in ’03. Not a single Democratic politician or organization could be bothered to help organize it or show up for it. The organizing was left to the Socialist Workers Party and other groups you folks laugh at. As we know, exactly one national Democratic politician (who, thankfully, is our congressperson) ended up voting against the AUMF.
A few months ago I was at a protest, with wife and now 23 year old daughter and a few thousand other people a week after the Dobbs leak. Once again, not a single Democratic politician or organization could be bothered to help organize it or show up for it. That was left to the SWP and various LGBQT groups.
More to the point, a few months ago I stumbled across a tiny anti-Yemeni war protest at a local park. That one was organized by Yemeni refugees and a few very young SWP members. A few commenters from another “liberal” blog that I sometimes read stumbled across the same protest. They commented that they couldn’t understand what the protest was about and laughed about it.
The anti-war movement and its publications are a shadow of their former selves. “They” used to be “us”, but no more, the “Democratic Establishment” made them irrelevant by treating their concerns as jokes, unless they see a good opportunity to gather more votes.
Let’s also remember, that while there is something of a cease-fire in Yemen, there is also a civil war in Ethiopia that is killing more people on a daily basis than the war in Ukraine. No one here cares.
Jim, Foolish Literalist

In “opinion” so no substantive coverage of the fact that US women in more than ten states now receive substandard, NOT “best practices” medical care for reproductive health due to the demands of religious zealots. @Brachiator:
The problem is that the “Christianity” the RWNJs want to impose is no such thing. The current threocratic patriarchal beliefs of the Right Wing have nothing to do with the teachings of Christ in any ancient version of the Bible.
There may be some new “Calvinist translations” that allow for hate of Jews and the colored proples, the subservience of women, the sexual abuse of children and young men and women by pastors, but I can confidently say that it is not actual Christianity, which requires the comfort of the poor and wretched, the refugees, and the acceptance of prostitutes, etc.
How we get from where we are back to real Christianty is beyond my level of expertise? But perhaps the shifting tides of people and megachurches will move in that direction so long as there are real Christians preaching the real gospel out there. I know there are some out there, some of them are friends of mine. Liberal friends, actually, who believe what they read in the original Aramaic and Greek and Hebrew.
