The AP is reporting that the state of Michigan is filing multiple felony charges for each of the 16 Republicans who signed a fake electoral vote certificate.
I AM SO NOT A LAWYER, but reading through the felony complaints, I would imagine there are strong incentives for people to plead and squeal.

Excellent news.
I am thinking of a vacay in Michigan, in the next year or two. Have never been anywhere north of Traverse City.
I would LOVE if Michigan sees an influx of blue $$$ not being spent in Florida.
Got to reward courage, and good government.
Kay
Hooray. I really wanted this punished.

From one news report:
Good luck with that defense, lady.
mrmoshpotato
Haha! Felony the fuck out of the fucking fuckers!
Yarrow
@twbrandt: That is hilarious. Good luck with that.
Ken
@twbrandt: Between that excuse, and the guy in the morning thread who says he accidentally voted in both Florida and Missouri, I’m finding it hard to decide which is dumber. I may have to wait for Popehat to weigh in.
oldster
This increases by 16 the number of people who may be able to help Jack Smith make the case that tfg was actively agitating for insurrection. So, these two good-news stories may be related.

@Elizabelle: I’m just a week back from a visit in upstate Illinois. It was so lovely and we were lucky enough to be there mostly during a break in the smoke, and the weather was perfect. We ended up taking a vacation in Minnesota/Wisconsin last summer and it was also just extremely scenic and calm. I know those places are not Michigan but I sort of group them together as lake states with interesting geology and forests. We are thinking of going to Michigan next year (we live in CA)
As for all the legal news, I am surprised at how little reaction I am having. They’re all just lying self-serving MFers from the top down. I’m out of emotions about it. I’m glad they’re getting a tiny drop of what they deserve but it won’t keep them from being sadistic antidemocratic jackasses.

@Kay: You’re moving to a good state.
Kay
Was it worth it, Kathy? You ruined your life for that sleazy, loathsome piece of shit who has no idea who you are.

@Kay:
I want to marry that sentence.

@Kay: Nice website there.

I’m actually more interested in there being some consequences down at this level of the insurrection than I am for Trump. Reason being that deterrence at the top level would really have to be the death penalty. When what you have to gain is the whole state, you’d need that kind of penalty for deterrence. And of course that isn’t on the table.
Down here with the groundlings, where people are doing this “meh, should I, or shouldn’t I…” is where any felony conviction or serious fine or any actual consequences could make a real difference.

@Kay:
There was that one dude who got shot dead by police for Trump. In Ohio IIRC.

I would imagine there are strong incentives for people to plead and squeal.
Well, we can at least be sure they’ll squeal. It IS, after all, a weaponization of government as part of a political vendetta against citizens exercising their First Amendment Rights solely because of their political views.
(Can I haz 6-figure rightwing think-tank salary now plz?)

@Kay:
The really sad thing is that for some of them, they probably do think it was worth it.

@Kay: @dmsilev: now they are Righteous Victims of Persecution, just like Jesus!

I misread those two charges of “uttering and publishing” as “littering and publishing.” I thought, “How dare they litter!”
I guess I am just too used to GOP pols getting charged with all kinds of crimes these days. But littering is beyond the pale! LOL
@Kay: Thanks for the lovely Michigan election crimes hall of fame.

@Kay:
There was a 50 something year old Jan 6th defendant, Audrey Southard-Rumsey, a respected piano teacher in her community, that Betty linked to downstairs who was absolutely unrepentant:
I don’t get some of these people honestly

@dmsilev: I think the ones who take a plea bargain won’t serve much time. That’s probably what the dairy farmer will do.
The true believers who try to tough it out will be sorry, though.

@C Stars: Did you go to Illinois’ crown jewel of state parks, Starved Rock?
Ben Cisco 🇺🇸🎖️🖥️♦️
FAFO University needs an Alma Mater…
Jharp
@Elizabelle: I have. Dozens of times. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is spectacular. Keeweenaw Peninsula is super cool. And Mackinaw, though touristy, is pretty good.
Jharp
@C Stars: I am a frequent visitor to Michigan and will likely retire there. The tourist towns are unlike the rest of the Midwest. The redneck factor is a fraction of 98% of the Midwest. The lakes are stunning. As is the natural beauty. I go to hunt for agates on the south shore of Lake Superior, the most spectacular body of fresh water on the earth. And two little known facts. The rocks along the shore are among the oldest on the earth. Like 2 billion years old or even more. Yet Lake Superior is only 11,000 years old. I’m heading up soon. Oh, and do the research on bugs. They can be awful in the more remote spots.

I’m sure she’ll be cheered up when the kids and grandkids she’s so proud of come visit her at the state penitentiary.

We might have to do a Michigan vacay BJ meetup! And thank you for all the information about places to visit in The Rational State.

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):
Oh yeah! That’s it!
On the Saturday after Inauguration Day 2016, we gathered in downtown to listen to speakers (including my Representative) and console each other. We did not storm the Capitol building in DC out of anger that day, or earlier in the month!

@Scout211:
Remember how seriously littering was taken, once upon a time. :^)

@Elizabelle: The temperature is pretty warm, so maybe a little north country vacation is warranted. Great idea, Elizabelle.
Subsole
@Kay:
But it wasn’t for him, Kay. That’s what we keep missing.
He was just the excuse. The man who gave them permission to finally put down the horrible, heavy burden of being human and stand there, purple-faced with their teeth bared and their eyes bulging, tendons on their necks standing out in self-satisfied vicious rage, and tell us what they really felt.
These folks did it because they hate us. It’s hard for sensible, thinking people to understand just how much they fucking hate us.

I don’t think you really have any better understanding of “these folks” (is this a monolith?) Than anyone else. And the way this kind of take parralel’s the deplorables’ ridiculous “it’s has to be all about me” bitterness should be a warning that you may not be thinking clearly.
