Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

“woke” is the new caravan.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Giving up is unforgivable.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Yikes, I leave to go pick up a check from a client, and I come back to this.

What did I miss?

A VP has been chosen.

Everyone can start making weekend plans again.

They Are All Mob Bosses Now

They are all mob bosses now.  So brazen – they are confident that they can get away with anything.

Don’t like your neighbor?  Don’t like how someone votes?  Now, in Georgia, you don’t have to just grumble about that.  You can request that they be taken off the voter rolls!

NEW EPISODE: The state of Georgia has created a new online portal that makes it easier to cancel people’s voter registrations. @marceelias shares his concerns about how the website will likely fuel election vigilantism in the state.

Lady Justice cannot be happy abut any of this.

In November, let’s show them that they’re wrong about that.

Update:  Drip, drip, drip, you bastard.  Maybe if you step down you won’t be prosecuted.

Justice Clarence Thomas failed to report a 2010 trip from Hawaii to New Zealand on the conservative donor Harlan Crow’s jet, Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat of Oregon and the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said.

Open Thread: Veepstakes – Andy Beshear

This post is in: Elections 2024, Kamala Harris for President

This is 100% the message that Harris should be putting forward. No better a messenger than the second most popular Democratic governor in the country in a deep red state. Andy Beshear is the one folks. pic.twitter.com/d1OuFtTQP7

— Jason Daniel Randolph 🇺🇦 (@JasonDRandolph) August 4, 2024

This may be out of date by the time it’s posted, but even if he’s not Kamala’s Choice this time, I suspect we’re gonna hear more from Gov. Beshear:

I think a lot people have forgotten that Andy Beshear, who is actually from Appalachia, has consistently had great points of attack against Vance, and comes with none of the baggage/drawbacks of other VP contenders who have grabbed the media spotlight. https://t.co/OBif2LkhZG

— Brash ♡♡ (@brashstrike) August 3, 2024

Here is Gov. Andy Beshear on how to win back Trump voters to the Democratic Party. Out of all of the potential VP messaging… this is by FAR the best I’ve seen. ??

The Walz “weirdo” thing is funny and rallies the base, but it’s not going to hit well with most swing voters. pic.twitter.com/AkoMqTE0cy

Kentucky Republicans ridicule Beshear’s efforts to land spot on national Democratic ticket https://t.co/lFJh9Msaa7

— The Associated Press (@AP) August 4, 2024

Per the Associated Press, hit dogs holler:

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s efforts to land the No. 2 spot on the Democratic presidential ticket drew ridicule from prominent Republicans during the Bluegrass State’s premier political event.

U.S. Rep. James Comer lampooned the governor for trying to “reinvent his image from a wimpy choir boy to a liberal attack dog,” while U.S. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell fired his own zingers at Beshear during the political speeches Saturday at the annual Fancy Farm picnic in western Kentucky.

Beshear, an effective verbal counterpuncher in prior years at the picnic, wasn’t on hand to defend himself and dish out his own barbs. Instead, he was among a half-dozen Democrats being interviewed this weekend by Vice President Kamala Harris as she closes in on choosing a running mate…

The suspense over whether Beshear will be asked to join the ticket has dominated headlines in Kentucky. On Saturday, Republicans got in their word as they dominated the stage at the picnic grounds. The political speaking is a raucous event where Kentucky politicians compete to land the sharpest — and sometimes most outlandish — barbs, complete with shouting and heckling from partisans for both parties…

We’re supposed to get Harris’ VP pick today, and I have to admit I’m with the Blogfather on this one…

Hear me out- DNC, lights dim, in the background RATM's blasty ass bass riff from Wake Up starts playing at ear bleeding volume. Out strides Tim Walz, wearing a faded artillery t-shirt, faded jeans, boots, and a shit eating grin, arm in arm with Megan thee Stallion

— Cake or Death (@Johngcole) August 4, 2024

And yet:

To be clear, I have my own preference of vice-presidential choice, but if Kamala Harris picks to run on a ticket with Thomas Eagleton's cadaver, she has my unequivocal support. She is running against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance. No other perspective or consideration is necessary.

— David Simon (@AoDespair) August 5, 2024

Kamala Harris now has a national lead in the polling averages at 538 and RCP (lol).

Not a good sign for Trump that even polling averages engineered to benefit Republicans are now showing him behind. pic.twitter.com/yNSBQZDBvx

On The Road – Albatrossity – Spring and summer birds in Flyover Country — 8

I can’t believe it’s August, time is flying by.

Albatrossity

Summer birding in Flyover Country can be slow, but there are enough sights and sounds to keep you interested until shorebird migration starts (early August) and the waves of southbound songbirds build up starting in September.

One of the curious things about birding in  my patch of Flyover Country these days might be the relatively recent appearance of species that formerly were found only in the more woodsy eastern tier of Kansas counties. One of those is the Yellow-throated Vireo (Vireo flavifrons), a species that would have been a rare find here 30 or 40 years ago, but is a backyard bird at my home now. The yellow throat is complemented by yellow “spectacles”, and the slow fuzzy song is a nice addition to the local woodland soundscape. Click here for larger image.

Full disclosure: I’m posting these thoughts under the influence of some choice state-sanctioned medical marijuana. I still marvel at its availability in this backward-ass state, and good stuff too!

Am currently sitting on the porch as the wind howls and rain falls in hissing sheets. Hurricane Debby is passing west of us, and I feel better about it since the storm crossed our latitude.

Looks like Cedar Key will be sideswiped and Steinhatchee will take a direct hit. Best of luck to all in the path!

I heard a branch or something heavy land on our boat a while ago. It’s too dark to see what’s going on, but I hear debris occasionally.

The doughty vessel is a 1985 metal jon boat, so it is basically indestructible as long as the engine wasn’t hit. Sunrise will tell the tale!

What are y’all up to?
