Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Afternoon Open Thread: This and That

First things first, shoutout to Watergirl for doing something super kind for me today. It doesn’t take much to change a day, and she did that for me. ❤️ Much appreciated.

Seems like kind of a slow news day. Hopefully, by saying that,  there will be more bad news for the moldy orange one breaking later today.

In other news:

WV Makes the National News!

by John Cole|  February 21, 202412:05 pm| 70 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

As a lifelong West Virginian, when you hear someone say “Hey did you hear that WV was in the national news” your gut instinct should be “Oh no goddamnit” or “Fuck, what now?” I’m not passing this off irresponsibly as folksy advice, I am very serious. It’s NEVER good news when WV makes the national news. The closest we get to good coverage is occasionally someone writes about pepperoni rolls or the color of the leaves in the fall. Those are the only exceptions. Trust me:

As book bans continue to sweep the United States, public librarians, educators, schools and museums could soon be exposed to criminal prosecution for showing children “obscene” material in West Virginia after state lawmakers advanced a controversial bill.

Known as HB 4654, the legislation overwhelmingly vaulted through the West Virginia House of Delegates on Friday and then made its way to the state senate. A delegate confirmed with Law&Crime on Tuesday that the bill is now being weighed by the West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee before it goes to the floor for a final vote.

***

But in West Virginia, while supporters of the bill — it passed 85-12 in the House of Delegates — argued it was a simple law aimed at protecting children, its opponents say HB 4654 is an end run at state censorship and criminalizing speech.

Critics argue that part of their issue with the bill is that it is too vague.

During debates before passage last week, House Minority Whip Shawn Fluharty openly worried that librarians, for example, might not be aware when a book contains obscene material, let alone know whether that material was shown to a child.

“But because it was in the facility and it was sitting on a shelf, it could still be prosecuted,” Fluharty said. “What you are seeing is done in third-world countries and now it’s going to be a headline in West Virginia.”

Notably, an amendment that would have made an exemption for public health teachers who provide materials for sex education was shot down as well.

The WV House of Delegates is composed of 89 Republicans and 11 Democrats. So one lone Republican joined to vote against. Disappointed to report that my own Delegate, the 20 something Jimmy Willis who was elected in large part because he has an (R) after his name and because he had large Trump stickers on his pickemup truck and put out embarrassing videos calling Biden an idiot and the then Democratic House of Representatives a bunch of socialists (I can’t find them anymore on his candidate page on FB). It was not for his ideas. His one big idea was rural broadband, and I supposed he has been active in spending the money the “idiot” Joe Biden and the “socialist” House of Representatives appropriated for rural broadband.

I suppose I am not surprised. I grew up with his mom (in the event of my parent’s early demise I would be adopted by her aunt and uncle), and I spent a number of years boozing and hanging out with his dad while I was in the Volunteer Fire Department. His dad was a good guy who died young, and I liked him and he was generally just a typical 80’s and 90’s WV redneck back before rednecks became bootlickers and cop worshippers. Regardless, I can report his dad, like the son, had little use for books.

Biden in Action: Serious Crimes in the Military

by WaterGirl|  February 21, 202410:05 am| 73 Comments

This post is in: Biden Administration in Action, Military, Open Threads, Politics

This has been a long time coming.  As they say, the best time to plant an oak tree is a hundred years ago; the second best time is today.

One more victory from the man who brought us the Violence Against Women Act.  It’s almost like he respects women and sees them as equals!

Special military prosecutors will now handle accusations of sexual assault, domestic violence and murder among other serious crimes, taking prosecutions out of the chain of the command of the accused.

This is one more big fucking Joe Biden deal that demonstrates that Joe Biden is here to change the world.  He’s been preparing for this his whole life, and it’s pretty clear that he intends to make every minute of presidency count.  Biden has a vision and he must be really great at delegating, because if he tried to micromanage everything, he couldn’t accomplish even a tenth of what the Biden Administration is accomplishing.

It must be pretty tough to report a rape in the military, especially when the offender is in your chain of command.  Or a member of the good old boys club.

A major overhaul in how the military investigates and prosecutes sexual assaults and other serious crimes launches today as the Pentagon shifts decision-making from unit commanders to independent prosecutors to determine if an accusation should go to court martial.

Starting today, cases of military members accused of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and murder —regardless of where they occur — will be overseen by an independent office staffed by specially trained lawyers the Pentagon is calling “special trial counsels,” a senior defense official said in a briefing with reporters last week. Each military branch will have its own office of special trial counsel and the lead prosecutors for each will report to their service Secretaries in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

Historically, service members accused of serious crimes would be investigated and prosecuted by legal teams under the same local chain of command as the defendant, a system that many alleged created conflicts of interest for commanders. Those cases will now be handled by independent prosecutors who will decide what actions if any, from a court martial to dismissal, a case requires.

In 2025, the office authority will extend to sexual harassment cases.

The Office of the Special Trial Counsel was established by an executive order signed by  President Joe Biden in July. The independent office grew from recommendations made by ani Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military, stood up by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in 2021. The DOD accepted the commission’s 82 recommendations which centered on accountability, prevention, climate, culture and victim support.

I would encourage you to read the whole article.  Or just celebrate the difference that this is going to make in people’s lives.

Open thread.

Former Rep. @AdamKinzinger urges Republican House members to force Speaker Johnson to allow a vote on Ukraine aid:

Both presidential and Biden’s own history make obvious why he’s not likely to just drop out. https://t.co/pSJ9HMbbpv

— Philip Bump (@pbump) February 20, 2024

I’m finding Philip Bump’s weekly Washington Post “How to Read This Chart” newsletter at the really helpful. This week’s entry — “There’s an obvious reason Biden isn’t dropping out of a tied race” [Unpaywalled MSN version]:

… It’s useful to remember 2020 when considering Biden’s path toward his reelection bid this year. Then, he and his staff took a very even-keeled approach to the nomination and the general election, watching allies and supporters get spun up into a sense of crisis while they simply pressed forward. To some extent, Biden’s team got lucky in the way any candidate might, but either way, the approach worked. Biden won.

On The Road – TKH – Sinai Trail Part 6

by WaterGirl|  February 21, 20245:00 am| 17 Comments

This post is in: On The Road, Photo Blogging, Sinai Trail

I am surprised (and delighted) by the enthusiastic response to the pictures from this trip. I guess that it is due to seeing pictures from a place that is so off the beaten track for one. Second, everybody knows of the Sinai from the Bible and probably has an image in their head of the Sinai being like the Sahara, an endless expanse of sand (I don’t know whether this is true for the Sahara as a matter of fact). Some readers of the earlier parts expressed something like “I had no idea the Sinai was like that”  when they saw that the Sinai is not like the Sahara.

I will conclude this series with another set of pictures of the landscape we walked through, less focussed on geological features as Pts 2 & 3 were and more illustrative of larger scale features of the landscape.

And then it is about time to get ready for this year’s hiking season which for me will start in early April and will likely end in November if my old bones hold up to what’s on the agenda.

On The Road - TKH - Sinai Trail Part 6 9
Jebel El Gunna Sinai peninsulaNovember 30, 2023

Jebel El Gunna is a long-stretched mountain of about 1500 feet height that has only a few points where it can be accessed by climbing a moraine. here we are looking back over the system of wadis we walked that day to get to the base of one of these access points. It was a particularly desolate area, we encountered vegetation in only one wadi where the Bedouin had built a dam to collect rain water and used it to irrigate an orchard.

… The high-tops were produced under a licensing agreement with a company called 45Footwear. Each one comes with a “custom charm” blazed with an illustration of Trump clad in a tight red superhero jumpsuit, muscles bulging out from underneath.

During Trump’s Sneaker Con speech, the Republican presidential frontrunner said “the most important thing” was “to get young people out to vote”. In 2020, Pennsylvania’s youngest voters, aged 18-29, overwhelmingly voted for Joe Biden, with Trump winning only 35% of the demographic.
