Watergirl Broke the Rule

Never say that it’s a “slow news day”:

The parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty-cementing Super Bowl win ended in gunfire and chaos, with officials reporting that multiple people were struck near the site of the rally that followed the parade, and that one person has died. Police said they took two armed people into custody, and local television live streams showed parade-goers running from the rally site and police entering buildings.

The day had started as a joyous party, the first time in 20 years any city had celebrated back-to-back Super Bowl wins.

But it ended far differently; police asked attendees to leave the rally area and asked witnesses for information about the shooting. Some children who attended the parade with their families to see Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the team’s other stars were separated from their families in the crowd and needed to be reunified with loved ones.

Making sure you’re scared everywhere is a gift from the Republican Party that just keeps on giving.

I know it’s twitter, but please take a minute to watch this video, or go find it on MSNBC and watch it there.  It’s quite heartening, and we can all use more of that.

Rosenberg: If we take a district that we lost by seven and a half points last time, in 2022, and flip it, it means all those Republicans who won Biden districts in 2022, are terrified. Because this is exactly the kind of district the Republicans have to hold. pic.twitter.com/fA3CQDB5bg

Today is the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, people invite the God of Wealth, affectionately known as Cai Shen Ye (???) , to their houses.
The God of Wealth is believed to bring fortune to people.

Speaking of improving wealth…

Wow: CNN spoke to a number of Republicans in NY’s 3rd congressional district who have previously voted for Trump and they said they voted for Democrat Tom Suozzi because “Republicans can’t govern.” That’s amazing. Americans are fed up with Republicans. pic.twitter.com/YOXDpY5QUq

— Harry Sisson (@harryjsisson) February 14, 2024

Worth noting that Suozzi bashed Republicans for killing the border deal in the home stretch of the race, which also suggests it's good politics for Dems to be associated with wanting to make a deal (its specifics aside) and bad for Rs to be associated with killing it for Trump. https://t.co/VryDahCfF3

On The Road – TKH – Sinai Trail Part 2

TKH

In Part 2 and 3 I will show some pictures of the scenery we walked through. I must confess that I really had no idea what to expect in terms of landscape and terrain before I started to do some background work while I was deciding whether this trip was for me or not. It turned that there was going to be mountains, lots of them, and so it was an easy decision to go for it. I am a mountain kind a guy.

Right off the coast as one drives North from Sharm El-Skeikh there are mountain in the several hundred to thousand meter height (1500- 3000 ft). Across the Gulf of Aqaba one has a view of Saudi Arabia and it looks pretty similar there (he says without having actually been there).

As you go inland the mountains get taller reaching 2650 m (8750 ft) at Mt. Catherine with several other summits nearby nearly as tall. The rock varies between granite of the grey and pink variety, sandstone and basalt. Between the mountains run the wadis, essentially flood plains, which can be deeply sandy (and I mean “deeply”) and often blindingly white, or rocky, filled with what one would call scree in the Sierra.

Both types of surface pose some challenges for the hiker as the sand “gives” and as you push off with each step your foot may actually slip back a bit before catching. The rocky surfaces just massage the soles of your feet and the soles after a while just don’t like it too much. The easiest surface to walk on was sand that had been hardened by the wind or by precipitation. If one got lucky it was a smooth surface so hard that one could walk on as if it was dirt. The absolute worst areas were those where the ubiquitous Toyota pickup trucks had passed through and left deep scars in the sand. Those stretches were really exhausting.

My desert hiking experience is mostly in the US Southwest, specifically Arizona/New Mexico/Utah. I had thought I had seen some rather barren places, but the Sinai peninsula can easily top that, especially after years of drought.

I had never been to a place before where the geology is so unobscured by vegetation as the Sinai. I found this “in your face” feature fascinating. Alas, I do not know much about geology as a science, so please do not expect that I expound on the features shown in the pictures to follow.

UPSTREAM OF COLORED CANYON, SINAI PENINSULA
One of the first attractions we walked through was the Colored Canyon. I must confess that I was not as impressed as I was expected to be. But if you have hiked some of the slot canyons in Utah, it would take a bit to be impressed by slot canyons elsewhere. It did not help that while we were working our way up the slot the sun was obscured by clouds and the colors were not as Impressive as they could have been. We had hardly exited the slot canyon and the sun came out, illuminating Colored Mountain. Some fine banding there!

Open Thread – Dems Win the House Seat in New York!

Dems Win the House Seat in New York!

I don’t know much about Souzzi, but I am celebrating his win!

(Washington Post gift link)

I’ll just say hallelujah and leave it at that.l

Democrat Tom Suozzi won a hotly contested special election for Congress on Tuesday, the Associated Press projected, retaking a seat in suburban New York and offering his party some reassurance amid high anxiety about President Biden’s political vulnerabilities.

Suozzi beat Republican nominee Mazi Pilip to replace Republican George Santos, who was indicted on a charge of fraud and then expelled from Congress late last year amid revelations that he fabricated much of his life story. The race for New York’s 3rd District — long viewed as a dead heat — played out in a suburban part of Long Island that favored President Biden by 8 points in 2020 but then swung toward Republicans.

With 85 percent of the vote counted late Tuesday night, Suozzi led Pilip by about 8 points.

National issues dominated the campaign, making Tuesday’s vote this year’s first high-profile test of the parties’ messages on abortion, the economy and, above all, immigration. Suozzi represented the area for six years previously and campaigned as a moderate who wanted to work across the aisle. But with New York City struggling to absorb more than 100,000 migrants arriving from the southern border, much of the campaign centered on what polling suggests is Democrats’ toughest issue.

Anybody know how fast we can get this guy sworn in?  (Confession: I haven’t read the full article yet, maybe the answer is in there.)

Open thread.

Update: Oh, and don’t forget that the deadline for the Ukraine quilt raffle tickets is Wednesday at 5pm Eastern.

Update 2:  This seems like big news!

BREAKING: Democrat Jim Prokpiak just WON his special state house election in Pennsylvania’s 140th district. This now means that the Pennsylvania State House, State Senate, AND governorship are *all* Blue. Another Democratic trifecta. Amazing news for Pennsylvania & Democrats.
