Thursday Morning Open Thread: Repubs Trying to Dodge Consequences

Now that the Senate has made it clear his vaunted impeachment is going nowhere, I guess Green plans to slither back home to Tennessee and present his ‘achievement’ as a personal best. Per the Associated Press, “House Homeland chairman announces retirement a day after leading Mayorkas’ impeachment”:

Tennessee Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Green on Wednesday announced that he won’t run for a fourth term, pointing to the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas just the day before as among the reasons it is “time for me to return home.”

“Our country – and our Congress – is broken beyond most means of repair,” Green said in a statement. “I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington.”

As chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, Green was a driving force behind the Mayorkas impeachment push over border security in a deeply partisan and highly unusual attack on a Cabinet official. His panel conducted a months-long investigation of Mayorkas, his policies and his management of the department, ultimately concluding Tuesday that his conduct in office amounted to “high crimes and misdemeanors” worthy of impeachment…

Green flirted running for governor in 2017, but suspended his campaign after he was nominated by former President Donald Trump to become the Army secretary. He later withdrew his nomination due to criticism over his remarks about Muslims and LGBTQ+ Americans, including saying that being transgender is a disease. He also urged that a stand be taken against “the indoctrination of Islam” in public schools and referred to a “Muslim horde” that invaded Constantinople hundreds of years ago.

After winning the congressional seat in 2018, Green once again made headlines after hosting a town hall where he stated, without citing evidence, that vaccines cause autism. He later walked back his comments but not before state health officials described the Republican as a “ goofball.”…

Presumably because it’s frowned upon to use the (correct) word ‘asshole’ in an official document.

The Sinai peninsula was lifted out of the sea by lava pushing from below. In this process cracks opened up at right angle to the direction of the lift. These cracks were filled in by lava which then cooled. The color of this fill is different than that of the surrounding granite, which is typically grey or pink. As a consequence one can observe these black veins that are running as a straight line for as far as one can see.

This particular spot was unique in that two of the fractures crossed each other leading to this black cross on the mountainside.

I had assumed — and I don’t think I’m the only one — that ‘Pastor’ Johnson ended up in the Speaker’s chair because he was the schlub who got lucky when McHenry threw the thinly-gilded apple of discord at the backbenchers waiting like bridesmaids for the bouquet. He could, after all, stand in for Mark Twain’s childhood acquaintance who became a preacher because “the contents of his brain could have been replaced with the contents of a pie, and nobody would be worse off except the pie.”

But I’m starting to suspect that the man with less attempted charisma than Ted Cruz was a deliberate Judas goat, chosen by the oligarchs and the Fellowship to further break the government at whatever cost. (To quote the unofficial GOP motto, You don’t need brains to break stuff.) I only hope his personal Rapture into the bowels of Christianist think tanks and highly compensated sinecures happens as quickly as possible.

+1 russian ship was upgraded to a submarine.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with the units of the @DI_Ukraine, destroyed the Caesar Kunikov large landing ship.
At the time of the attack, the ship was in the territorial waters of Ukraine, near Alupka.

Black Sea fish will definitely like Caesar salad.

Would that President Biden, and the rest of us, had that luxury. There are times I’m very glad to be a volunteer aggregator on a not-quite-ten-thousand-top blog, and not a professional journalist. Mr. Charles P. Pierce, at Esquire, on the last ‘Second Amendment’-related tragedy — “The Shooter’s Family Was Begging for Intervention Before She Opened Fire at a Megachurch”:

… Our latest unfortunate public exercise of Second Amendment freedoms took place in Houston, at the headquarters mega-church of Joel Osteen, a prominent teevee huckster Pharisee. (Osteen was the whited sepulcher who refused to open his megachurch so that poor and homeless people would not be left outside to face Hurricane Harvey in 2017.) On Sunday, a 37-year old woman named Genesee Moreno showed up at Lakewood Church with both her seven-year old son and her AR-15 in tow. She set up a firefight with two off-duty cops that ended up with Moreno dead, her son in critical condition with a gunshot wound in the head, and a bystander slightly wounded in the leg. The subsequent investigation has revealed Moreno to be quite insane. From CNN:

“My daughter-in-law when she was taking medication for schizophrenia was a very sweet and loving woman,” Walli Carranza, the mother-in-law of 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno wrote in a Facebook post that Moreno had been put under an order for emotional detention in 2016. She had a mental health history documented by Houston police, said Christopher Hassig, commander of the Houston Police Department’s homicide division. Carranza, the shooter’s mother-in-law, had unsuccessfully petitioned to be declared conservator of Moreno’s son Sam in 2022. She said Sam was wounded in the head when off-duty officers shot and killed Moreno at the church. Moreno should never have been allowed to own firearms, her mother-in-law said. Texas has no red flag law – also known as an extreme risk protection order law – that would allow authorities to take weapons from a person thought to be in crisis.“
