Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Come on, man.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Cold Grey Pre-Dawn Open Thread: Sow the Wind, Reap the Whirlwind

3 shooters, 2 under 18, police say it was related to an argument. In our old neighborhood we had about 3 years of that nihilistic crap. Guys felt they were being “disrespected” on FB so they’d shoot at each other. They killed a few bystanders & wounded probably a dozen more https://t.co/yXhuTiYUSF

As information comes forward today about underage shooters at Chief’s event yesterday…remember Missouri Republicans passed laws making it LEGAL FOR MINORS TO OPEN CARRY WEAPONS IN PUBLIC.

Thursday Evening Open Thread

Hola. I realized today that it has been almost half a year (or maybe it already has) since I promised to set up a Spanish class and more than a month of living in Arizona and you want to know how many new Spanish words I have learned or taught myself.

Not a god damned one. Murrica, Fuck Yeah!

I have picked up a couple, but nothing that would help one speak the Spanish language. I mean how many times a day do you need to use the words “arroyo” or “tortilleria” or “carniceria” into conversation although now that I think about it I probably use the word carniceria way fucking more than my doctor would like me to with her always telling me that “You’re great there just needs to be less of you.” I’m just assuming she means physically, but who knows…

***

My sinuses have been kicking my ass the last couple of days- and don’t you fuckers run to the comments and tell me I have fucking valley fever or some other exotic bullshit it’s just my sinuses. Regardless, they have made me lethargic and feel like shit, so I have just been chugging a ton of water and taking it easy. Had several hours to burn before picking Joelle up from a work function, so I loaded Jack up into the car and we drove off to the dairy to return all the milk containers we had amassed, and after turning them in and getting a new half gallon, I decided to have a vanilla milkshake and because I asked real nice and they gave me an extra cherry on top. And it only came to a couple bucks.

I took the 202 on the way out and it was really pretty with the rolling hills and on the southwestern portion of the loop, the houses built into the hills were quite striking. I could live there were the houses not so close together. Little farther up to the west is the Gila River resort and casino. I just took Southern Ave to Baseline for the ride back, always on the lookout for something interesting. Went to Lowe’s to pick up a drill bit, then walked Jack for a bit and went to pick up Joelle.

I’m hoping I adjust to it. Still better than everything else hurting and being cold, I suppose.

I saw some clips of the Fani Willis testimony today and I enjoyed it immensely. The court may not hold these motherfuckers in contempt, but she and I are sure free to, and boy howdy did she:

“I listened to the argument this morning, where did an excellent job pointing out how dishonest you were with the court on Monday, and I'm actually surprised that the hearing continued. But since it did, here I am.”

— Skyleigh Heinen-Uhrich (@Sky_Lee_1) February 15, 2024

I feel better? How about you?

And for dessert there is this:

An FBI informant has been indicted on two counts of allegedly feeding the bureau false information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Alexander Smirnov, 43, disliked Joe Biden and was arrested in Las Vegas after returning from a trip overseas, according to the Justice Department. The case grew out of the special counsel investigation being led by David Weiss, who is also leading the case against Hunter Biden. Weiss had been appointed by then-President Donald Trump as the top federal prosecutor in Delaware.

The 37-page indictment alleges that Smirnov had been a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010 and “provided false derogatory information to the FBI” about both Bidens after Joe Biden became a candidate for president in 2020.

Smirnov allegedly told the FBI — falsely — that officials with Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company that Hunter Biden worked for, had told him they hired Hunter Biden because he would “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems.” Smirnov allegedly told the FBI — again, falsely — that Burisma officials had told him they paid Hunter Biden and Joe Biden $5 million and that it would take investigators 10 years to find the illicit payments to Joe Biden.

Ouch. That sure is going be a problem for Comer’s House “investigation.” Speaking of Comer, I misread something this morning that said Comer and thought it said “Comey” and shouted outloud “FUCK THAT GUY” and then when realizing it said Comer and not Comey I bellowed “AND FUCK HIM TOO.”

Thurston’s diet is going well and I thought I saw his spine for the first time today in a long while. And I mean his actual spine not a metaphor for courage, because he is still a cowardly little shit who starts things that yelps like bloody murder when other animals react. At any rate, here is a picture of the little bastard:

Thursday Evening Open Thread 3

When Joelle is not around I like to remind Thurston that even his mother didn’t love him. And she didn’t!

I had other things to say but I forgot them.

Mike Johnson didn't even consult with moderates before blocking Senate deal: GOP insider https://t.co/mP04kOAanH

— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) February 15, 2024

Pekka Kallioniemi just published one of his famous #vatniksoup threads devoted to Johnson — here’s a selection. Throughline: Johnson’s entire career is as a servant to extremely fundamentalist businessmen, there’s been at least one incident where millions of dollars ‘disappeared’ while he was nominally in charge, and now he’s taking donations from Russian oligarchs. (Kallioniemi doesn’t reference Johnson’s ‘never had a bank account’ excuse for leaving no financial trail, but it’s certainly one more questionable detail.)

For those wondering, the House is in recess until 28 FEB 2024. The first of the stepped continuing resolutions expires on 1 MAR 2024. The second, which includes the DOD and the Department of State, expires on 8 MAR 2024.

Yikes!

Earlier today I saw that M4 and Cole were both putting posts together, so I just focused on work and ignored Balloon Juice.

Here’s an open thread because it looks like we can use one!  I don’t even have a fun photo to post.

Okay, here’s a last-minute snap of Henry.  Not a great photo, but it’s something!  You can see the kitties heading into the kitchen because they think it’s dinner time.

The Disgraceful 2023 Hugo Awards

by Major Major Major Major|  February 15, 20243:53 pm| 111 Comments

This post is in: Books, China, Foreign Affairs, Justice

Before I get into this–Chinese science fiction is so much more than the chauvinist, authoritarian “Three-Body Problem” series. A great place to start is the short story collection Invisible Planets, and its eponymous story which you can read for free here. I’m also enjoying the Sinopticon collection right now. If you’d like to support the victims of this farce, you should check these out!

There are a handful of awards in the sci-fi & fantasy world that are considered the Big Ones. There’s the Nebula, where the guild (the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association) votes. Most of the rest are decided by fans–the Locus and BSFA, for instance. The most famous of these is the Hugo, voted on by attendees of the World Science Fiction Convention. The Hugos have been roiled by controversy in the past, most notably by a gamergate-adjacent group called the Sad Puppies attempting to elevate an anti-diversity slate. This led to “No Award” winning several categories, and ultimately, the introduction of some changes to their ranked-choice system to disempower slate voting (discussion in the comments).

One fun thing about ranked-choice voting is that it’s tamper-evident. Which brings us to 2023, where the voting was extremely, extremely tampered with.

2023 Worldcon was held in Chengdu, China. When this was announced, fans of human rights expressed concerns that this might endanger both participants and the awards themselves, in addition to maybe just not being an appropriate venue for a genre that has traditionally opposed oppressive governments. It felt, perhaps, like a cash grab on behalf of the industry; certainly reputation-washing on the part of China. This is far from an unheard-of arrangement; similar things have happened with golf and chess in the Middle East, for example. But it was surprising to see something with such an anti-authoritarian reputation go for this. (Some future hosting bids have come in from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Uganda; a Tel Aviv bid is also controversial. These are now expected to go down in flames.)

So, were we right? Did this seriously damage the Hugo awards? Oh goodness yes. It even seems to have damaged civil rights in China.

The entire process was suspect from the get-go, and it’s only gotten worse as more has been revealed. People noticed three weird things about it right away:

  1. The nominees were announced ninety-one days after the start of the convention, which was the maximum allowed delay. This has never happened before; they’re usually released almost immediately. Figuring it out is a simple process–you count nominations. So why the delay? No clear explanation was given.
  2. A lot of works that probably would have won were declared ineligible, most notably those by R.F. Kuang and Xiran Jay Zhao, two North American writers who are not always friendly to the Chinese government. Neil Gaiman’s Sandman TV series was also declared ineligible–once because it was eligible for two awards and you’re only supposed to be eligible for one; and a second time for unstated reasons. Gaiman is an outspoken critic of China’s tendency to imprison dissident writers.
  3. The ranked-choice results don’t look right at all.

Hypothesis #3: The math is bogus. That is, the reported nomination statistics include large numbers of nominations attributed to the “top group” that do not arise from an actual nomination process. […] There really aren’t any conclusions other than the ones that were immediately apparent from the raw data. The 2023 Hugo Nomination Statistics are implausible and anomalous and as a result we don’t actually know who should be on the Hugo Long List. (And–based on factors that I haven’t discussed here–we don’t entirely know who should have been on the Hugo Short List.)

The whole thing stank to high heaven. Most assumed this was a case of state-encouraged self-censorship, though there was considerable pushback from the left against the idea that China would ever do such a thing. Well, guess what–some emails leaked, and we were right.

Crazy Thought Open Thread

This post is in: Democratic Politics, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Politics

With some Republicans now looking back longingly on the Speaker McCarthy years, and thinking longingly about the Squeaker’s fundraising abilities, might someone initiate the Motion to Vacate?  And nominate McCarthy as speaker?

With just enough Democratic votes to give him the small number of votes that it would take him to win?  With the agreement, in writing, that he would appoint people to the rules committee that would allow him to bring all votes to the floor for an up or down vote.

McCarthy feels vindicated after they voted him out, we get up or down votes on everything, and the crazy religious guy is no longer in any position of power.  Likely ever, with his track record.

Crazy or brilliant?

Open thread.
