Republicans haven’t misread American society this badly since Terri Schaivo https://t.co/sfBsq3q6wg

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) January 30, 2024

The word has gone out, and every good little Trump-humper hastens to obey. Per Rolling Stone, “Trump Allies Pledge ‘Holy War’ Against Taylor Swift”:

Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift hasn’t even endorsed President Joe Biden for reelection yet. That hasn’t stopped members of MAGAland’s upper crust from plotting to declare — as one source close to Donald Trump calls it — a “holy war” on the pop mega-star, especially if she ends up publicly backing the Democrats in the 2024 election.

According to three people familiar with the matter, Trump loyalists working on or close to the former president’s campaign, longtime Trump allies in right-wing media, and an array of outside advisers to the ex-president have long taken it as a given that Swift will eventually endorse Biden (as she did in 2020). Indeed, several of these Republicans and conservative media figures have discussed the matter with Trump over the past few months, the sources say…

Last month, the source close to Trump adds, the ex-president commented to some confidants that it “obviously” made no sense that he was not named Time magazine’s 2023 Person of the Year — an honor that went to none other than Swift in December…

Meanwhile, as Trump has been having a popularity contest with Swift in his own head, others close to him —including GOP operatives, some of his 2024 staff, and Trumpy media figures — have been brainstorming different ways to go after Swift. Since late last year, these Trump allies have repeatedly discussed how to turn the culture-warrior dial up to 11, if she re-endorses Biden this year, the sources recount.

“It would be more fuel thrown on to the culture-war fires,” says an official working on the Trump reelection efforts. “Another left-wing celebrity who is part of the Democrat elite telling you what to think.”

Publicly, members of Trump’s inner sanctum and social circle are already signaling Swift’s prominent position atop their enemies list — a situation that has reached fever pitch now that Swift’s boyfriend will once again be playing in the Super Bowl.

On Monday, Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba shared a post on social media that includes the caption: “Who thinks this country needs a lot more women like Alina Habba, and a lot less like Taylor Swift?” (Habba has represented Trump in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case, where he was ordered to pay $83 million.) …

For those who don’t do twitter, here’s how the Susan Collins story I saw last week framed:

GOP Sen. Susan Collins says she will not endorse former President Trump, even if he becomes the Republican Party’s nominee for president.

Here’s the next sentence, which totally belies the first part.  Look for the weasel words in bold below.

Asked if she could see herself endorsing Trump if he wins the nomination, Collins replied: “I do not at this point.”

Same thing here.  (The Hill)

Title: Collins, leading Senate GOP centrist, won’t endorse Trump in 2024

Except she didn’t actually say NO.  She essentially said “At this time, I do not see myself endorsing trump if he wins the election.”

I don’t know if I’m more pissed off that Susan Collins is such a weasel, or that the media is so awful in their reporting of it.  In their reporting of everything!

Oh, and another quote from the Hill article.

The highly respected Maine senator was one of seven Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump on the impeachment charge of inciting insurrection during his second Senate trial in 2021.

Highly respected by whom????

Are weasel-dom and bad reporting your pet peeves?  They sure are for me!

I'm glad that President Biden spent the weekend campaigning in SC, even though the primary isn't competitive and it's not a swing state come November. They earned their new FITN status, and that includes
increased Presidential attention.

Idaho wants to kidney-ize its hospitals

by David Anderson|  January 30, 20248:14 am| 11 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance

Idaho’s House has a Medicaid expansion modification bill under consideration.  The big thing it wants is work requirements.  It is unlikely to get that without an act of Congress given the litigation that went against work requirements for Medicaid during the Trump administration.  However, it also wants to transfer a lot of funds to its state’s hospitals from the middle class via its Medicaid program:

The department has, with federal approval if necessary, allowed  persons eligible for medicaid under this section who have a modified adjusted gross income at or above one hundred percent (100%) of the federal poverty level to receive the advance premium tax credit to purchase a qualified health plan through the Idaho health insurance exchange  established by chapter 61, title 41, Idaho Code, instead of enrolling in Medicaid, except that a person may choose to enroll in Medicaid instead of receiving the advance premium tax credit to purchase a qualified health plan;

This is a modification of the Arkansas Private Option where Arkansas placed its Medicaid Expansion population into ACA exchange plans instead of traditional Medicaid under an Obama administration waiver.  Arkansas enrollees are placed into the ACA unless they meet certain complex medical conditions.

However this is discretionary in Idaho as currently written. This optionality changes the dynamics. It is an invitation for a huge transfer to hospitals from the 138% federal poverty level and above ACA enrollees.

Hospitals get paid substantially more from an ACA enrollee than a Medicaid enrollee.  CSR-94 plans, which is what these enrollees would be eligible for have some premium and cost sharing (~$500 deductibles is not uncommon) while Medicaid has token premiums and minimal cost-sharing.  We know from Allen et al that ACA plans have substantially more spending mainly due to price levels than Medicaid expansion plans for individuals who barely qualify for one of the two programs.  We know that most people have minimal spending and minimal interest in buying access to care.

I’m working on a project with several collaborators where we examine the impact of consolidation in the dialysis industry on ACA premiums.  Duopolies in dialysis means substantially higher premiums for the ACA.  A good chunk of the hypothesized mechanism is that dialysis firms are very happy to pay for the premiums and cost-sharing of an ACA enrollee who needs dialysis through a charitable foundation.  They are happy to do this because ACA plans pay the dialysis center substantially more than Medicare or Medicaid so even net of paying the premium and cost-sharing, the dialysis firms come out WAY AHEAD!

I would be shocked if hospitals don’t send their social worker to every Medicaid Expansion patient who has cancer, hemophilia, or other very high cost disease with an offer for the patient to elect an ACA plan with hospital foundation grants to pay the premium and any additional cost-sharing.  Doing this would be a massive windfall to the hospitals and it would mainly be paid for by either the federal government in the form of higher premium tax credits OR really sick individuals with incomes that are high enough to make them subsidy ineligible.

On The Road – frosty – 3rd Annual National Park/COVID Challenge Part 2 – Pinnacles National Park

frosty

Pinnacles is named for the volcanic peaks rising from the many faults in the area. There are two unconnected sides to the park; we were on the east side that has the only campground, where we stayed. The west side may have better views, but the access is from a long winding, occasionally one-lane road. We opted out of a day trip to that side and instead went on two short hikes.

Bear Gulch Cave Trail goes up to a talus cave (boulders piled on each other). Condor Gulch Trail goes to an overlook with a good view of the pinnacles, and as it turned out, a view of two of the ~90 California Condors who have settled in or near the park after being raised in captivity. In 1987, the last 22 condors were captured in 1987 and bred at the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the LA Zoo. They have been released into the wild since 1991 in Central California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja California.

Along with the condors, there were a few other interesting birds in and around the park.

California Condor. Getting a picture (even a bad one with too short of a lens) of one of the ~330 condors in the wild was the high point of the visit.

‘Take Our Border Back Convoy’ heading through Central Texas to Eagle Pass https://t.co/9KkHQHpDwB

— Texoma's Homepage (@TexomasHomepage) January 29, 2024

Per Austin news station KXAN, “‘Take Our Border Back Convoy’ heading through Central Texas to Eagle Pass”:

The “Take Our Border Back Convoy” will head from Dripping Springs to Eagle Pass, Texas later this week in a show of force organizers say will “call on our government to take action” to “secure the southern border.”…

The trip is part of a nationwide call to action bringing people to various hotspots along the border including Eagle Pass, Yuma, Arizona, and San Ysidro, California. The group invites “active and retired law enforcement and military, veterans, Mama Bears, elected officials, business owners, ranchers, truckers, bikers, media, and law-abiding, freedom-loving Americans.”

The Texas stint will include a “pep rally” at the Dripping Springs H-E-B on Thursday, Feb. 1. The group will then leave from Dripping Springs on Feb. 2 and travel to the Cornerstone Children’s Ranch in Quemado.

A spokesperson for H-E-B reached out to KXAN to let us know company policy prohibits rallies or protests on company property regardless of the reason for the event. They have attempted to let organizers of the event know they will need to gather somewhere else…

“We’re not going to blockade,” an organizer said in a Sunday video address. “We don’t want to cause any problems for law enforcement or the National Guard… we don’t want to put anyone in danger.”

Some border residents and advocacy groups are wary, however. The League of United Latin American Citizens issued its second-ever “National Alert” in response to the convoy, warning of possible violence and criticizing Gov. Abbott of spreading harmful rhetoric…

The convoy’s official conduct expectations requires that members agree to “peacefully participate.”

After all, if the Big Gubmint brings the hammer, no more sweet sweet ‘love offerings’…
