Rescue Bleg: Cat TNR Volunteers in Georgia

From former lurker RL:

I’m a long-time lurker at Balloon Juice. I was first drawn in by the writings of Sarah Tall and Proud and have grown to love the site’s contributors over the years. I start every day perusing a few blogs and BJ is one of them.

My parter (business and life) has a Go Fund Me for her cat rescue operations. We have had more than a dozen stray cats walk up on our property in the last 3 years. We have kept a few, adopted some out, and trap-and-released some. We live on a dead end street that is sort of rural, but right against a very urban area, so apparently people use it as a cat dumping area. We try to keep up.

Then Romeo – one of our trap and release cats that stuck around – got into a some kind of scuffle and required surgery for his ear. That sort of pushed us over the edge cat fund-wise.

I’ll tell you a very quick, Readers Digest version of where we are. When Covid struck, my partner was employed as a waitress at a high-end restaurant and I was touring as a drummer in bands and filling other time with a construction crew. We were lucky enough to buy a small house in Stone Mountain, GA just before Covid hit. I am immune compromised, Crohn’s Disease. We realized we had to reassess quickly, as neither of our employment situations was safe. So we both left our jobs and started a company that specializes in “outdoor improvement.” I build fences and decks, pressure wash and do various outdoor things; my partner gardens and does things such as hardscaping. Also, my partner found part time contactless employment filling orders for a print shop. Through this and help from awesome Joe Biden, we kept our house.

(BTW – as an aside, I have lots of fun stories from touring. I’ve played for Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, John Sinclair, and lots of bands you probably have not heard of, lol. Glad to trade stories for funds!)

So – A friend convinced my partner to set up a Go Fund Me. I’m helping spread the word and I thought of the BJ community…

There’s a picture of Romeo over at the GoFundMe:

HELP ME SURVIVE KITTEN SEASON!

I never set out to work in cat rescue. But I live near an industrial area where cats are dumped a lot, and they just started walking up to the house. At last count, there have been 15 and I have gotten them all fixed.

Some have been feral, and I have trapped, neutered and released them (TNR). I have socialized some and gotten them adopted into loving homes. I’ve personally housed as many as I can, both inside and out. I can either fix the adults or else be swarmed with kittens, many of whom will be in rough shape.

Each year brings a fresh wave of tomcats, all duking it out to be king of kitten season. The mamas with fragile kittens are right behind them. I am committed to spaying or neutering every cat that comes to my yard (or that I help someone trap in their yard) so that the feral population can be controlled instead of euthanized in shelters (they are all full) or suffering life on the streets.

There are vet bills. TNR spay/neuter surgery fees currently range from $30-$50, depending on where there are available appointments. Recently, retired community tomcat Romeo was attacked by a feral tom and had to have his head stitched up ($580, before suture removal). I also keep up with yearly vaccination and registration.

On The Road – Albatrossity – Snow Days

It’s Albatrossity Monday!  Then we have the frosty post that didn’t publish on Wednesday of last week, followed by a 3-part series from UncleEb.

On The Road - Albatrossity - Snow Days 10

Albatrossity

Much of the country was hit with major cold temps and snowy weather in mid January, and my patch of Flyover Country was no exception. So I thought I should put together a batch of images from that time, even though some of us (including me) would really rather put that kind of weather in the rear-view mirror. Some of these are common backyard feeder birds, since last week’s series of birds at a feeder in North Carolina seemed to be well-received.

I was not able to get out and about as much as usual after a series of snowstorms dumped 5-8 inches here, and many of the back roads were either unplowed or inadequately plowed. That meant that I spent a lot of time filling the feeders, scattering seeds on the snow-covered deck, and replenishing the water in the birdbath, as well as watching to see what birds took advantage of those resources. A lot of them were Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis), who discovered the seeds on the deck quite quickly. As you may know, Dark-eyed Juncos come in a variety of flavors, and we get most of them here in Flyover Country. This is the pink-sided version. Click here to enlarge the image.

Sunday Night Open Thread

by John Cole|  January 28, 20248:27 pm| 95 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "Stories from the Road", John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Another perfect day today weather wise. We did a lot but it doesn’t feel like we did much. We went to breakfast with her friend Buzz who is basically her Tammy and they have been a bonded pair for close to 30 years, and I had never met him before. Went to First Watch which is typical chain breakfast (don’t get eggs benedict the hollandaise is NOT made in house and wretched or if it is made in house that person needs to be fired but probably publicly shamed first).

Then we went to this massive antique mall called the Brass Armadillo with is a lot like the antique market I go to in Steubenville, where it’s just a space filled up with different and mostly unattended dealer lots and you just grab what you want and take it to the people up front and they sort out who the money goes to. Ironically enough given our thread the other day I discovered a couple caches of Revere Ware and I briefly entertained picking up a couple more pieces and then just taking the stuff she had to goodwill or to anyone who would take it. Still might, they had a bunch so I can think on it.

Pretty much just browsed there for a while, then went home and just sat outside on the patio for a couple hours. That was nice.

Joelle is trying to downsize/rightsize her furniture situation, so we were hitting these places for the right piece and the right price, and at 4 pm we drove to an estate sale where Joelle had arranged to pick up a MCM hutch and credenza, precisely what she needed. We have to go pick that up next Saturday.

Other than that, we had… fajitas again. I could honestly eat them every day, and it was the best kind of dinner- already cooked and already paid for. Now it’s off to the couch. I see that Taylor Swift’s boyfriend won his sportsball game.

*** Update ***

I am such a clown, I forgot that at the second place, the estate sale, I was standing there minding my own business when out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of red so I went over and looked and there was this beauty of an office chair obscured by sold stuff:

Sunday Night Open Thread 5

Sunday Night Open Thread 6
It was not yet sold so I snatched that bad boy up for 50 bucks like I was robbing someone. Damned this is every bit of 50 lbs and all that solid metal base and thick ass pleather. Could not pass that up. Could probably list it on ebay for several hundred and flip it in a week if it wasn’t an item that wasn’t perfect for her tastes.

I’m sitting in it right now. They used to have this in the old computer lab in the 70’s with those steel desks that weighed 50000 lbs and I always though they were the ibm model m of chairs. It says that it is a Sturgis or at least there was a patent for sturgis pedestal chairs on it but other than that I have no idea what it is. I’d wager it is at least as old as me.

Medium Cool – Medium Cool – Dorothy A. Winsor: Romance, Romantasy, Fantasy

by WaterGirl|  January 28, 20247:00 pm| 119 Comments

This post is in: Books, Guest Posts, Medium Cool, Culture as a Hedge Against This Soul-Sucking Political Miasma We're Living In

Medium Cool is a weekly series related to popular culture, mostly film, TV, and books, with some music and games thrown in.  We hope it’s a welcome break from the anger, hate, and idiocy we see almost daily from the other side in the political sphere.

Arguments welcomed, opinions respected, fools un-suffered.  We’re here every Sunday at 7 pm.

Dorothy is here tonight with a set of reviews for another 3 book categories.  Welcome Dorothy!

Romance, Romantasy & Fantasy

by Dorothy A. Winsor

As jackals may recall, I set out to read a book from each of the 15 categories Goodreads uses in its Best Book of the Year contest. This post covers categories four (Romance), five (Romantasy), and six (Fantasy). Wait! Don’t run away. See what you think of the books I read and maybe give us the lowdown on your own reading.

Romance: Love, Theoretically

Medium Cool – Medium Cool – Dorothy A. Winsor: Romance, Romantasy, Fantasy

Love, Theoretically – Kindle edition by Hazelwood, Ali. Contemporary Romance Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

First, my Romance confession: Even though Romance is the best seller of any category of fiction, I don’t usually read it. But on principle, I don’t diss romance novels. I believe it’s as hard to write a good romance novel as it is to write a good book in any other genre. I think the disrespect commonly shown for romance is a sign of disrespect for its largely female readers. Actually, I’d say the same thing about disrespect for the YA category, especially since women writers dominate YA. I recently saw a discussion on Reddit that implied YA was great until it got girl cooties.

In this category, I chose Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood. Elsie, the central character, is an adjunct professor of physics at U Mass and other Boston universities. Let me just explain that adjuncts are hired year to year in non-tenure-track positions. The pay is so bad that, like Elsie, they teach at multiple places at the same time. Elsie supplements her income by working as a girlfriend-for-hire.

But as the book opens, things are looking up for Elsie because she’s one of two finalists interviewing for a tenure-track job at MIT. Elsie’s job hunt is complicated by the presence of an existing faculty member with whom she has history.

My major reservation was with the male lead. In my opinion, Jack is a cliche. He’s desirable at first sight but slightly mysterious. To quote the book: He has “a dash of bad boy…a hint of mystery…a dollop of smoothness.” And in the next paragraph, he’s “distant. Uninterested. Effortlessly confident. Charismatic in an intriguingly opaque, inaccessible way.”

Additionally, the tension in this story dropped way off for me in its last third. By that point, the plot problems raised at the book’s start are all resolved, and we’re left with Elsie’s internal issues and the romance. Sadly, the man is the one who guides Elsie to self-knowledge, a move I thought undercut her and her growing strength.

Romantasy: Fourth Wing

Medium Cool – Medium Cool – Dorothy A. Winsor: Romance, Romantasy, Fantasy 2

Amazon.com: Fourth Wing (The Empyrean Book 1) eBook : Yarros, Rebecca: Kindle Store

Romantasy is a combination of Romance and Fantasy. The category is new this year because so many submissions combined these two genres that they’d have crowded everything else out.

Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros, is the story of characters training in a fantasy battle school that, among other things, requires them to bond with a dragon. The central character is Violet, whose brittle bones were supposed to send her to train as a scribe rather than as a combatant. But plans have gone awry.

I was engaged enough in this book that I picked it up whenever I had a free moment. I wanted to find out what happened. So that’s a good sign about the plotting. I’m also a sucker for found family stories and that comes into play here, as the cadets at the battle academy form friendships and struggle through trials together. There are some action scenes, including a long battle scene at the climax, and a couple of hot sex scenes. So, if those are your jam, they’re here.

I was, however, skeptical about the world building, and remained so throughout. I was never sure exactly why they were at war or even who they were at war with. There’s an acceptance not only of death but of murder not just of external enemies, but also of their classmates. Generally, societies don’t act that way. They might murder groups they see as “Other,” but not their own kind, at least not routinely as something they see as good. Also, people witness death over and over, and seem to suffer no trauma.

Fantasy: Tress of the Emerald Sea

Medium Cool – Medium Cool – Dorothy A. Winsor: Romance, Romantasy, Fantasy 1

Amazon.com: Tress of the Emerald Sea: A Cosmere Novel (Secret Projects Book 1) eBook : Sanderson, Brandon, Lyon, Howard: Kindle Store

In this category, I chose to read Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. Tress lives on an island in a sea of dangerous spores. She’s a window-washer by trade and has never imagined leaving home. Then the man she loves is taken captive, and Tress sets out to rescue him. The plot is full of twists that require Tress to grow and change. It’s not particularly tense, and I could put it down when I had to. But I always picked it up again because Tress’s company is enjoyable.

Sanderson calls the book a “grown-up fairy tale,” and it does have that tone. In some ways, the narrative voice reminds me of Neil Gaiman’s stories. Here’s an example of the description of a character: “Imagine him as the answer to the question: ‘What if that gunk from your shower drain were to come to life?’” I only gradually realized that the narrator is a character in the story. Unraveling his identity eventually becomes part of the plot.

The book is often humorous, but it treats serious, heart-felt matter. One of my favorite parts is when a tertiary character is killed, and the narrator stops to tell us more about this character, turning him into a person, rather than an anonymous red shirt.

Sanderson says the idea for this story came from watching “The Princess Bride.” His wife noted that Buttercup scarcely appeared. She wondered how the story would change in the princess was the one to set off to rescue the person she loved. Sanderson originally published this book on his Kickstarter as part of a project of his own called “Secret Project.” For a long time, Sanderson and his wife were the only readers. I like secret projects. In writing, I think they’re particularly useful because they provide a place the writer can play without worrying how anyone else will judge them.

How about you? Are there genres you don’t read? Do these books sound appealing? What have you read recently that you want sound off about, no matter the category? Have you ever had a secret project?
