Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

I really should read my own blog.

The willow is too close to the house.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

This fight is for everything.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Afternoon Open Thread

Alrighty- let’s talk about something else. I am currently packing the car for my trip to Arizona that starts tomorrow or Friday morning depending on whether I still feel like driving tomorrow, and wouldn’t you know it that despite it not raining for several months here I no more than put the back seats down and lifted the hatch back but it started to rain. Because of fucking course we did.

So let’s play a fun game and try to figure out what the fuck I am going to forget to pack.

And on a serious note, if any of you are considering self-harm or doing something rash, please reach out to someone. That is not the answer. Simply pick up your phone and dial 988 to reach help. Please. Do it for me if no one else.

Some Reads This Morning

Here are a couple of posts that struck me as making good points.  First, just an overall acceptance of how fucked up our “fellow Americans” are by Barry Petchesky at Defector.

I agree with some of this post by Steve M, and not with other parts, but overall I think he’s really on point when he talks about the negative way that Democrats are perceived, including the great deal of self-hate embodied by some of our campaigns.   He also says that Trump’s followers view him as some kind of angry Andy Kaufman.  The anger part is important because it partially masks his mental decline (angry still seems “with it”).

Just to address the “Biden didn’t seem to care about high prices” part of Steve M’s post — this is the strength of Trumpism, and the weakness of politics based in rationality.  Trump is going to fuck up the economy, but at the same time he and his myth-making machinery (Fox, X, etc.) will build up a story that denies that the economy is bad, explains how it isn’t Trump’s fault (“the Biden/Harris economy I inherited”) and then will provide myriad distractions to keep people’s minds on something else.  You saw this a few months after Biden was elected,  with the “I did that” stickers plastered on gas pumps in red states (and in some blue ones — I saw one on a “Black Lives Matter” poster in Denver).

Democrats just don’t have this in our DNA, from soup to nuts.  We’d never print out these stickers and put them on gas pumps.  We are pretty terrible at combating right-wing fables because we basically ignore them as stupid, and we think the smart thing to do is accentuate positive progress of our agenda.   So, in hindsight, Biden missed an opportunity to address higher prices head-on, though I doubt any other person with Democratic DNA would have done better.

There is a god damned firehose of stupidity channeled through social media directly at persuadables.  We must develop the talent of picking a few peanuts out of this shit and pushing it back at the people producing it — disrupting the deny, blame and distract cycle that’s so effective for Trump.  Otherwise, it’s just death by a thousand cuts.  We need our own media ecosystem, it’s been said forever, but, as Atrios points out, the money Democrats spend on elections generally doesn’t build us anything.  (I specifically don’t mean B-J fundraising, which I think is quite good and helps build organizations.)

More on this to come.

Some Post-Loss Decorum

This starts right the fuck now and let me be clear about this. We are not going to spend the next couple days lashing out at each other in the comments. It accomplishes fucking nothing and no one needs it right now. There will be plenty of time for post-mortems and accountability when the data has been analyzed, and we can fucking wait until then and look at things with clear eyes and try to find a way forward.

I am hurt, sad, depressed, and angry. I’m scared. I have been shot at and been and been through catastrophic explosions, through two car windshields, fallen off a roof, fought alcoholism and anxiety and depression and had multiple life changing injuries. I have been through a lot of shit, and this is the scariest thing I have ever encountered. My head is spinning and I am dizzy and in disbelief. I don’t need a bunch of people in here attacking other people because Biden should have stepped down earlier or should not have stepped down or whatever your deep thoughts are. I don’t need or want your bullshit half-baked analysis. I don’t need or want you attacking other people. And I am a white man who can blend in and not at all the target of what is about to come.

People are hurting, vulnerable, and scared. We have a lot of people who do not have the privilege of being able to blend in like I do- they are exposed, defenseless, and have targets on their backs. If what you are about to spew in the comments isn’t a constructive way to move forward, just shut your rancid piehole for a couple days. We don’t need immediate internecine warfare. Coming on here and shitting all over people to make yourself feel better is not the winning play you think it is.

We are all in this together, and there is a lot of ugliness about to come down the pike and there is a very real potential the America we know and love may be gone for quite some time. So if you are not about helping those around you and lifting people up instead of pushing people down or attacking people who are in the middle of a traumatic nightmare, you are not fucking welcome.

I don’t need a bunch of edgelord douchebags reciting “hard truths” to people. I need people looking out for each other.

Do you motherfuckers understand me? Don’t say things you regret, and let’s try to be the helpers, not the haters. We have many immigrants here, people of color, gay/trans people, a lot of women. It is our job to protect them. Do not let me down.

A Little Hindsight

This post is in: Open Threads

I went to bed at midnight eastern last night because it wasn’t looking good and I figured that I didn’t need to suffer in real time.  And here we are.

Thinking back, there’s one campaign artifact that I think will probably be the tale of this election — Tim Walz’ attempt to convince four undecided voters to vote for Harris/Walz.  They were three middle-aged males and one first-time woman voter.

The males were all wearing union shirts and worked, or had worked, union jobs.  Their main concern was cost of living.

Walz’ talk about preventing price gouging didn’t seem to convince them of much.  Biden being the best president for unions in modern history didn’t mean shit, because they still had anxiety about their jobs and, let’s face it, the Democratic party hasn’t been all that great for unions in the couple of decades before Biden.

I think the other factor is “Trump is just Trump” which makes it hard for Democratic attacks to do much to someone whose negatives are so baked in.   His voters don’t care about his racism and, frankly, I’m sure racism played a part in Harris’ loss, as did sexism.

When you have a prosperous economy and prices are “too high”, well, it’s tough for the incumbent party.  Losing the Senate was pretty much baked in to anything but a shockingly good Harris/Walz showing.  The House is still possible and boy do we need it.  I hope Pelosi is right.

Anyway, as LBJ on Twitter said, welcome to Texas. We’re all living in it now.  Get your shots!

North Carolina notes on a shitty morning

by David Anderson|  November 6, 20247:44 am| 38 Comments

This sucks.

I think we’re going to be looking at North Carolina in a few weeks once both data becomes available and our heads become clearer as we try to figure out what next.  Right now, it just looks like a near uniform 5 point shift right with a few exceptions that are concentrated in the swing states.

North Carolina Democrats had a pretty good night at the state level.

    • Governor
    • Lt. Governor
    • Attorney General
    • Secretary of State
    • Superintendent of Public Education

Most importantly, it looks like the Democrats broke the Republican super-majority in the State legislature.  The governor’s veto actually means something now.

They also held onto the single competitive seat in Congress after the state got aggressively gerrymandered.

I’m not sure where I’m going with this beyond looking for shimmers of good news somewhere, but I think North Carolina will be a center of figuring out what is next.

But that is not a today problem.  I’m gonna just get through the day while checking in on my friends and having them check in on me.

As much as it breaks my heart and shatters my soul, it’s over.

We will fight like hell the next four years to stop his destruction of our country. Today, we grieve the harm this will do to our country.

Tomorrow, we get to work to defend our democracy. pic.twitter.com/gsMtoUTyH5

The exact JRR Tolkien quote:

“‘We must do without hope,’ he said. ‘At least we may yet be avenged. Let us gird ourselves and weep no more! Come! We have a long road, and much to do.’”

Even as a devout Cynic (Original Eeyore branch), sometimes I feel like one of those mussels they dump into polluted waterways for filtration cleansing, but: Now more than ever, we’re going to need community, not least the community we’ve built here. Honor to all who fought their best, doorknocking and donating and doing the gruntwork.

So, we start the hard work of rebuilding. And as a start, here’s some bright spots from last night. WINNERS!:

Andy Kim was elected to the U.S. Senate in a historic win that upended New Jersey politics. Kim will be country’s first Korean American senator. https://t.co/mNRjbzC2Ap pic.twitter.com/NUia5v8B1d
