NBC obtained an excerpt of Hillary Clinton’s upcoming book, in which Clinton describes that whack moment during a town hall-style debate when Trump was lumbering around behind her like a sour-faced, spray-tanned golem:
“My skin crawled,” Clinton said. “It was one of those moments where you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching ‘well, what would you do?'”
Clinton said during the debate she decided against telling Trump, “back up, you creep, get away from me,” and in order to keep her composure, she gripped the microphone “extra hard.”
But, in hindsight, Clinton wondered if she should have taken the time to tell Trump off for following her.
“It certainly would have been better TV,” she said. “Maybe I have over-learned the lesson of staying calm, biting my tongue, digging my fingernails into a clenched fist, smiling all the while, determined to present a composed face to the world.”
Wouldn’t have made a difference — the Beltway morons would have implied that only a brittle, hysterical, ambitious, deceitful, inauthentic woman would have reacted to Trump’s purposeful, dynamic movements in such a way. Still, I want a “back up, you creep” bumper sticker.
In other news, Trump also creeps out Katie Couric:
This morning, after reading the totality of @realDonaldTrump ‘s speech in Phoenix, I am truly afraid for our country.

Wife and I bought a century+ old house a few years ago.
Previous owners (who knows how many decades ago) decided natural wood was “not bright enough” and so painted all the doors, mold, trim, etc. off white.
I ponder stripping off the old paint to get the natural wood grain back. But I didn’t have the desire or budget to go that route.
Last week my wife came home with some cans of various shades of brown paint. She painted doors and woodwork with small brushes. It looks EXACTLY like natural, stained wood. She captured the look of real wood grain. I’m amazed every time I see it.
She was an Art major and is expert with pen & ink and paintbrush.

I agree, a “back up, you creep” bumper sticker is one that I might actually put on my bumper.
I guess I get tired sometimes of the media’s persistent bias against women in general, and HRC in particular. You are absolutely right, that they would have tut-tutted about HRC’s “shrillness” or whatever for asserting her space, even while they were high-fiving each other over Trump’s every rude, belligerent, triumphant (and, unfortunately for all of us, true) dick-waggling takedown of his Republican opponents, for example.
Sometimes I find myself thinking that the next time I am in a situation like the one she was in, I am just going go all Patrick Swayze in Road House, where the villain tells him gloatingly about all the atrocities said villain intends to commit upon his person, whereupon the Swayz just glares at him, in a combination of disbelief and disgust, and says, thru’ clenched teeth:
“You are SUCH an ASSHOLE!”

Am I the only one who wishes Hillary wouldn’t be coming out with a book now? I really think Trump is on the ropes now, and we need the media to focus on him and what he’s doing to the country. Last night I actually watched CNN after the Trump tirade. There was some Breitbart shitstain who was questioning why the panel was saying that Trump might be unstable, etc after the speech since the speech was basically just a replay of his campaign last year. I agree with you about walls, but I think doors and moulding should remain natural. But I remember seeing photos of John Lennon posing in the Dakota, and all the wood trim around his windows and doors were painted white! In the Dakota! Home of Greta Garbo and Lauren Bacall.

I agree generally, but what you forget is that Trump’s behavior is going to be getting so much worse that there will be no ignoring it. In fact, he will be incited by her book to be even worse (though everything incites him).
My question is: what is the endgame here? While I know that the Republican run congress has been and will continue to be avoiding any action, even THEY will have a trip wire at some point.
I laughed at what Major, Major, Major said upstring that he is afraid OF his country. I definitely hear that but I think though I can’t define what exactly will happen, that the congress will have to act. Watch the goings on around the budget and debt ceiling. McConnell already put his stake in the ground that the debt ceiling is gonna be raised. If Trump fucks with that, we will see what the congress is prepared to do. They will have no choice but to stop Trump — somehow — though its not clear whether he would go without a fight…. As I said, he has been gining up his supporters into a fevered lather and keeping all the hate groups on board, so this could get really really bad. Anyway — let me stop here. Getting too carried away but seriously, what is the endgame? Is there any scenario where this presidency ends without a fight?

We also probably have a walk-in fireplace we could expose, but again the amount of work and the dust it would create are too much to contemplate. It took long enough to replace all the dangerously done old wiring in the house.

I think the media is still conditioned to turn and nitpick Hillary, however Trump is president and has power over us. Hillary doesn’t. He will quickly do something else bad and the media will turn back toward his stories. Hillary bashing won’t get the momentum it used to.

@MoxieM: We had knotty pine paneling in a 1934 house we owned, in the family room. It looked like natural knotty pine unless you looked at it and really thought about the knot placement. The real knots were bleeding through the beautifully done faux paint job, sometimes overlapping the painted ones. Then I noticed that when I scrubbed the grubby dirt off the door frame, the faux paint came away and it was white underneath. We eventually ended up sealing all the painted wood and painting it white again. The room was an illegal addition, an enclosed patio with a glass ceiling; a sun room in Riverside CA, a place where it hits 112 in the late summer.

I suspect she knows the extent the media screwed her over this election. She’s always struck me who wasn’t overly fond of our media in the first place. I got the impression that during the campaign, that she like Obama was trying to do her best to go around the traditional media and reach out to voters directly or through more local media. She doesn’t quite have Obama’s charisma so the national news media was able to bully her into going through them by endlessly criticizing her for crap like not giving press conferences or interviews to national news sources.

– One scenario is that he would not be removed, but explicitly “managed” by the congress and the three generals — that he would be blocked somehow from executing his worst instincts. Irony abounds. McConnell spent Obama’s entire presidency blocking everything he could, not because of danger to the republic, but his warped power needs. Now he may (and the Congress), have to block this president to actually keep the republic safe. I think McConnell for sure and probably most of the senate are pretty close to being there. He is already protecting his senators and screaming expletives at Trump on the phone.

The problem with that as a bumper sticker is precisely its double meaning. The vast majority of Americans would have no idea that it applied to Trump,so that primary message would be lost. To make things worse, it would be needlessly aggressive when viewed by motorists who aren’t creeps and aren’t necessarily tailgating, but just very close in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
To be effective, a bumper sticker has to be instantly recognizable and “back up, you creep” wouldn’t be. There is already enough aggression on our highways; I don’t think such a bumper sticker would be effective in any way except to satisfy the relatively small number of people who understood its message.

Even if the media were tearing her apart, Trump couldn’t stand to have their attention stray from him for more than a few hours at a stretch. Uncounted Kansas ballots fuel fears about Kobach’s proposals
BY ROXANA HEGEMAN
Associated Press
AUGUST 23, 2017 7:22 AM
WICHITA, KANSAS
A conservative firebrand promoting President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud oversees a Kansas election system that threw out at least three times as many ballots as any similarly sized state did, fueling concerns about massive voter suppression should its practices become the national standard.
Only six states — all among the top 10 in population — discarded more votes during the 2016 election than the 33rd-largest state of Kansas, according to data collected by the bipartisan U.S. Election Assistance Commission, a federal agency that certifies voting systems. Kansas’ 13,717 rejected ballots even topped the 13,461 from Florida, which has about seven times as many residents.
Critics of Kansas’ election system argue its unusually high number of discarded ballots reflects policies shaped over several elections that have resulted in many legitimate voters being kept off voter rolls in an effort to crack down on a few illegitimate ones.
There is particular attention on Kansas now because its secretary of state, Kris Kobach, is co-chairman of Trump’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. The architect of strict election policies requiring voter ID and proof of citizenship, Kobach has suggested Kansas’ rules could become a national panacea for voter fraud, which Trump — without providing proof — blames for Hillary Clinton’s popular vote victory.

@WaterGirl: I am meeting with both the surgeon and the medical oncologist. I honestly can’t remember how much I said earlier because my head was in a very shitty place, but the long & short of it is that the tumor was discovered as a complete fluke just last month (I have no symptoms). The plan was a quick lobectomy to remove it, but my surgeon discovered cancer in one lymph node and therefore didn’t remove the lobe. The oncologist agreed that a quick, aggressive chemo regimen was called for, and as soon as I’m strong enough following the chemo (the plan is four rounds, one day each, three weeks apart), they’ll reschedule the surgery.
@Immanentize: There is talk of a port, and I’ll find out Friday, prior to Saturday’s first infusion. Pro-port: I’m kinda hard to stick, with my slippery veins. Anti-port: If I need only four rounds of chemo, I can maybe deal with a bit too much poking?

So in addition to polluting my city with his presence yesterday, the damn motorcade and Air Force One departure made me over an hour late to work. Took me two hours to get from my house to the office.
Local media is full of shit like the Arizona Republic’s ludicrous headline “VIOLENCE ERUPTS”, with a front-page picture of a man kneeling on the ground with his hands up in front of a phalanx of Phoenix PD in riot gear. As I mentioned last night, I witnessed no violence and heard no warning from Phoenix PD before they set off the flashbangs and teargas. People started screaming and panic was about to break out, but I heard lots of protestors telling one another not to run, not to freak out so as not to cause chaos. A friend of mine is at a press conference being held right now by the Phoenix PD to discuss the fact that it looks like the police got twitchy and ended up causing more problems through overreaction.
As always around here, the biggest problem was the heat….over 50 people needed medical care for heat exhaustion and heatstroke and some were hospitalized, including police officers.

What we really ought to be doing right now is figuring the best way for her to prevent the opposition Congress from shutting down the government just to spite her. Hilarious how we’re near that spot anyway, with our fucknozzle “president” threatening to shut it down if funds for his vanity wall aren’t appropriated.

@TenguPhule: Would these even pass muster for publication in local news “Letters to the Editor?”

@TenguPhule: Oh damn. I was worried that that was the case. I missed whatever announcement that was made

@germy:
I recall a discussion about Modern! in an episode of iirc Rehab Addict. People deciding to cover the hardwood floors in their old Victorians with linoleum so their homes didn’t look like the ones in which they grew up. Then along comes Nicole Curtis, who strips out the linoleum and rehabs the old hardwood. Everything old is new again.
MJS
@Amir Khalid: I get that. I don’t know when the time would be right. I just felt that the past week was a watershed moment where I wanted the spotlight to be exclusively trained on Trump. Yes, the media sucks, and will continue to suck, and will be distracted no matter when the book is released. My concern is interrupting what seemed to be momentum. That’s it.
TenguPhule
@Butthurt Jordan Trombone (fka XTPD):
Sadly yes. The editors have no standards these days.
No, I’m not joking. I have actually seen stupidity that rivals this in local letters. And I live in liberal Hawaii. Our nuts are fewer, but harder.

@MJS:
Just wait till the Debt Ceiling fiasco. This is going to vanish down the media memory hole once that crisis hits.

@TenguPhule:
The scary thing about the debt ceiling is that we’re already in the “extraordinary measures” phase. When we hit it, we’ll hit it hard. Somehow, Congress is supposed to pass a budget and the debt ceiling in September. They’re still talking about tax reform, but I can’t see them able to cobble together a bill that could pass with all the warring factions. We could end the month with a government shutdown AND a debt default.
opiejeanne
@Kristine: Bless her, she’s like an insane little Energizer bunny when it comes to rehab. She’s brought back several houses that I thought were unable to be saved and they were gorgeous when she was finished.
That couple in Waco (Fixer Upper) has brought back several houses I’d have just torn down they were so bad and nothing special to begin with: poorly built, badly added onto, etc.
Jeffro
@TenguPhule: And you were totally correct. I’m just floored that even a Trumpov supporter would go with “Trump’s anti-stupid” as one of the things that comes to their mind about Donnie. It’s beyond what even a dumb person would say (and Trump supporters are plenty dumb, obviously)

I trust him, as I trust people like you who have been through this. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness to me when I feel as though it is I who should be focusing on you.
TenguPhule
@Insane Clown POTUS:
Its even worse then that. The official September deadline was based on optimistic assumptions of tax revenue back in March. That optimism proved unfounded in reality. And did not account for any unexpected major spending which might pop up in between then and September.
So we’re more in the extra-extra ordinary measures to Rob Peter to Pay Paul and the Treasury could literally find itself in yet another Constitutional Crisis where it finds itself having to either use untried means to pay the bills or default unexpectedly on automatic payments.
And McConnell and Ryan have still not scheduled a vote yet. The stupid asses think they’ve got a margin for error.
When it comes to the full faith and credit of the US government, there is no such margin.

@The Moar You Know:
Hillary can’t win. Women often can’t win. No matter what they do, someone will interpret it negatively compared to some man. You saw a variation of this with Obama, where some closet racist would complain about something Obama did, despite freaking proof that some white president once did the exact same thing.
Sometimes Clinton would come across as overly cautious and calculated, especially compared with a loose cannon like Trump or the cuddly Uncle Bernie. I would tell her and the next woman candidate to relax and be herself and not give a fuck about media interpretation of her actions. Never play a game that you can’t win.
BTW, I thought that Clinton was often no less calculated, but often still more engaging during the 2008 campaign. Also, more attention was focused on Obama.

@A Ghost to Most: Them too. Even my numbskull* sister has finally awakened to the fact that he’s dangerous.
She’s fretting about the planned America First rally in Upland, corner of Foothill and Euclid, just a couple of blocks from her house and no idea which direction they’ll head. She did bother to ask me about America First, so that’s a start.
I look forward to the day when she stops listening to men for her opinions and instead READS SOMETHING so she can make up her own damned mind. I’m sure she got the idea from a combination of blindly voting for Republicans because our parents did (Dad didn’t, but she doesn’t believe me) and listening to the opinions of the guy next door, who also gives his wife her opinions.
*I can say that here because she doesn’t read this blog, doesn’t read anything other than a rare foray onto book of faces

@Brachiator:
Being comfortable in your skin is an important attribute for a successful politician. You can succeed sometimes without it, but it’s much easier if you feel that way. That’s one thing I think is good about Gillibrand. I joke sometimes that I like that she curses, but what I actually like is that she doesn’t seem to be calculated about it – she’s talking the way she talks, not in politician-speak.
Of course, all reports are that Hillary actually is like that in smaller settings, and there were hints of it in her acceptance speech (well, really, more than hints) and in her Benghazi testimony, but with the press she often seemed to be mostly looking for the hidden traps in whatever she was being asked. (Entirely understandable and often justified, but nevertheless offputting to a lot of people.)

@smintheus: ex and I bought an old house, we weren’t sure of age other than it had been there before WI was a state, we gutted and lived under construction for years. Decided to simply pull old kitchen off and replace with new including basement. Found stone cistern under old kitchen, when pulled the lathe and plaster off discovered that the kitchen was original log cabin. I would do it again, the 2 X 4’s were solid hardwood and had been nailed together while the wood was still green, not only were they hardwood but they were at least 2X4, some were even bigger. The “bones” of house was still good, even if it had a floating foundation that had to fix by putting in basment.

@Quinerly: thanks, and I hope that cocktail was yummy! As an only child, and since my dad’s been dead 22 years and she hasn’t gotten involved, I’m IT when it comes to her nearby direct family. We moved back from Colorado to be closer to our parents before it was too late after my wife’s mother was taken too soon. My wife was the one who went home to help and be there, and now it’s my turn. I’m truly thankful the call from the surgeon last week, mid-surgery, told me that she has to fight hard rather than what most mid-surgery calls from the surgeon mean.

@Karen: We own a cabin built in 1923. We pulled the cheap panelling off the walls in the bathroom and discovered that not only was the room actually square (and it was an addition in 1925) and the 2X4s were actually really truly 2X4s. And not only were the corners perfectly square, this was after the building had been stabilized in 1990 because it had a bad foundation. On the front porch there is still the end of the cable that ran from the front wall to the rear of the cabin to hold it together while they put new posts under the floor and cemented the dry-stack foundation.

@lamh36: Happy Birthday, Layla Grace! And thanks to your auntie for sharing photos!

@opiejeanne: I was completely impressed by the workmanship that went into the house, an architect gave us a ball park time frame since the 2X4’s had square nails. The log cabin was mortise and tendon, and the floor was pine logs that had been shaved flat on three sides. Some of the floor joists for the craftsman T shape had bark on crawl space side, the house was balloon framing which made it easy to remodel and turn some of the tiny rooms into a big room
