Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

When we show up, we win.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

T R E 4 5 O N

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Faunasphere: Gender-Free, Multicultural, Anti-Christian Veggie Burgers Edition

by Hillary Rettig|  September 28, 20164:20 pm| 96 Comments

This post is in: Faunasphere

1) First, in the LA Times, a vegan activist details the varied flavors of abuse she got after creating a petition asking In-N-Out Burger to add a veggie burger to its menu:

…dozens of vile Facebook screeds calling me: un-American, a fascist, a moron, delusional, an imbecile, fanatical, disgusting, disgraceful, a control freak sociopath, and the worst part of the human race….It turns out veggie burgers persecute religious groups (“You’re attacking a CHRISTIAN BUSINESS and it is WRONG”), seek to destroy American values, and are hell-bent on ruining everyone’s good time.

Also,

We have learned that this single menu addition could lead to In-N-Out, and quite possibly the whole country, becoming “a gender-free, multicultural safespace to cuddle in” that’s populated by “the worst types of humans.”

Eternal vigilance and all that… Still! That’s a heckuva fuss to make over a veggie burger. (The petition has 36,000+ signatures right now, btw. Please sign it!)

2) Relatedly, and music to my ears: Reuters reports that a group of forty large investors representing more than $1.25 trillion in assets is urging the top global food companies to shift to plant-based proteins:

“Investors want to know if major food companies have a strategy to avoid this protein bubble and to profit from a plant-based protein market set to grow by 8.4 percent annually over the next five years,” Coller said. The campaign follows an Oxford University study which said $1.5 trillion in healthcare and climate change-related costs could be saved by 2050 if people reduced their reliance on meat in their diet. The study also pointed to growing political pressure on companies to change, citing a consultation in Denmark on the introduction of a red meat tax and a Chinese government plan to reduce its citizens’ meat consumption by 50 percent, FAIRR said.

Among the companies being addressed: Kraft Heinz, Nestle, Unilever, Tesco and Walmart.

3) If you’ve ever had gall bladder problems then you might have some inkling of the agony bile farm bears endure their entire lives—trapped in tiny cages, and with their gall bladders constantly “milked” for bile for use in Asian folk remedies. Happily Laos has just announced that, in compliance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) treaty, it will close all its bile farms—and all its tiger farms for good measure. (Tigers are also used for folk remedies, as well as the pet and trophy trade.) The tigers and bears will be sent to sanctuaries. (No word on the lions, tho…)

4) Armani goes fur free. (And, btw, a lot of the supposedly fake fur out there isn’t fake. Here’s how to tell.)

5) Personally, I can’t wait for dairy to die:

Some of the nation’s largest dairy producers will pay $52 million to settle an antitrust class action with consumers in 15 states and the District of Columbia….The dairy producers were accused of conspiring to prematurely slaughter more than 500,000 cows between 2003 and 2010 to limit the production of raw milk and drive up prices for yogurt, sour cream and other dairy products.

Fortunately, it doesn’t look like I’ll have to wait long. (See, also, this article on how dairy farmers are converting their land into almond groves. Wheee! And because I know someone’s gonna bring it up: here’s a piece on water use in almond farms versus dairy.)

Looking forward to your thoughts and fauna-related news (and nondairy milk preferences) in the comments.

The Lies of Big Pharma: Hormone Replacement Therapy Edition

If you are a woman, or love a woman, or want a textbook case of the corruption of our medical system by Big Pharma, you need to watch, and share, this video.

(Edit – sorry, I can’t the embed to work, so please follow the link.)

(Edit2: Adam here – I went in and fixed it for you.)

Reminds me of the recently revealed news about how the sugar industry, with the help of a couple of bought-off Harvard researchers, successfully derailed studies on the negative health impacts of sugar, almost certainly contributing to the illness and premature death of…thousands?…millions?

Related: a bunch of links from Dr. Greger (the guy narrating the video) about dietary links to breast cancer. Also, a large-scale study concludes that soy alleviates menopause symptoms and another useful link on that.

Faunasphere: Dear Fresno Police…

by Hillary Rettig|  September 16, 20163:25 pm| 48 Comments

This post is in: Faunasphere, Shitty Cops

C’mon.

Six cop cars one day, four the next, threats of ongoing surveillance—that’s pure intimidation of activists engaged in free assembly and legal photography on public land.

Better be careful, Mr. Tough Guy With Your Badge Taped Over, [thx to commenters for pointing out that the tape might be for mourning, and the cop’s nameplate is over his right pocket] or someone will think you’re there to provide “safety, service, and security” for Big Ag at the expense of ordinary citizens.

SHARK’S a great group, by the way. Their thing is video, and they use it well. They’re also targeting Oklahoma Rethuglican James Inhofe’s canned pigeon hunts, in which big, brave “hunters” shoot pigeons released from cages. In violation of hunting ethics, but apparently in full compliance with GOP ethics, they leave wounded birds behind to suffer and die.

Related: the government’s true terrorist priorities.

And speaking of drones…federal biologists are using them to deliver vaccine-laced M&Ms to endangered black-footed ferrets. “We dropped the vaccine out of a bag while walking around, but that’s very hard to do over thousands of acres,” Randy Machett, a USFWS biologist told The Guardian. “We are working with private contractors to develop equipment to drop the vaccine uniformly across an area, rather than one hog getting to eat a big pile of them.”

Montanans: be on the lookout for one really fat ferret.

iOS10 Includes Automatic Organ Donor Registration

This post is in: Open Threads

Just a note to let everyone know that, with today’s iOS10 release, iPhone users can now legally register as an organ, eye and tissue donor right on their phone. Click on the Medical ID tab within the Health app. (App also lets you share your decision with family and friends via social media, which is probably a good idea.)

More info at Registerme.org.

PS – For those who are interested, the story of my kidney donation to an animal rescuer. (One of the best things I’ve ever done, btw.)

Alice Sebold on Remembering the Dead

by Hillary Rettig|  September 11, 20167:24 am| 56 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

One of the best things I’ve ever read, from Alice “The Lovely Bones” Sebold:

AND where do the dead go after they have sucked down their last breaths and drowned in the rafters of their homes? After they have died in the aftermath of fiery explosion? Do they gather, as some believe, together, and ascend to an otherworldly level; or do they remain, watching; or disappear altogether? Do they wait to hear the stories we will tell?

The truth is, none of us knows what the dead do. But on earth, where we remain, the living become the keepers of their memory. This is an awesome and overwhelming responsibility. And it is simple: we must not forget them….

Do the dead wish you to suffer? Do they want you to watch CNN and Fox News for days on end? Do they want your guilt or pity? All of these things are like jewels to them. In other words — valueless where they have gone.

Instead, a woman wants her husband not to forget her but to go on and live. A child longs for a lost mother’s arms again. A man grows peaceful when his partner finds new love. Some of the dead, I imagine, get enraged at these things. They are dead after all. They get to do and feel — I hope — what they want to….

Look up from this newspaper you are reading, ignore the morning traffic you may find yourself in tomorrow, turn off the television one day this week and watch the moon. Think of the dead of 9/11 and of Hurricane Katrina. Stay there a moment. Remember them.

Today’s a day for remembering; I wish everyone peace.
