Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Fight them, without becoming them!

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

As you read this post, russia is continuing to commit systematic large-scale crimes against humanity by destroying the electricity grid & heating system across Ukraine, threatening the civil population to die from cold and epidemics.

russia has been openly trying to erase the Ukrainian nation.

Holodomor (“hunger mass-death”) is what Ukrainians call the genocidal artificial famine created by Soviet dictator Stalin in the 1930s that killed millions here.

Now fascist Russia has added a new word to the vocabulary of Ukrainian genocide – Kholodomor, or “cold mass-death.”

Trump has spent a year trying to pressure Ukraine into surrender, growing angrier each time it failed.

Emboldened by these developments, Russia has spent the past year bombing Ukrainian civilians: children on playgrounds, churchgoers on Easter, families asleep in their beds at night.

Here’s the map of last night’s Russian strikes on Ukraine.

After latest Russian attack, nearly 5,600 buildings in Kyiv without heat in -14°C temps. 80% had only just had heating restored. Entire Left Bank has no water, while Right Bank is on reduced pressure. Pechersk has partial supply. Dnipro, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Poltava also hit.

— Euan MacDonald (@euanmacdonald.bsky.social) January 20, 2026 at 3:11 AM

And here’s the Ukrainian air defense tally:

During last night’s attack, Ukraine shot down 342 of 372 aerial targets launched by Russia.

Destroyed / launched:
• 0/1 Zircon anti-ship missile

Government Officials Must Put Forward Non-Linear Proposals on How to Protect Lives and Reorganize Operations – Address by the President

20 January 2026 – 20:00

Dear Ukrainians!

I have just held a special coordination call on the situation in the regions – on recovery efforts, and the deployment of necessary resources. Kyiv is in the hardest situation. This morning, once again, “shahed” drones struck an energy facility in the region. Repair crews are working now. The performance of the Air Force against the “shaheds” is unsatisfactory: we have interceptors, significant forces are engaged – mobile fire groups, F-16s are available – but the organization of Air Force operations must be different. We reviewed this situation separately with the Minister of Defense – conclusions will be drawn.

I spoke with our delegation – Umerov, Budanov, Arakhamiia. They are actively working with the American side, working with European representatives on potential meetings and support packages. Air defense missiles are needed daily. Weapons are needed daily. Equipment for recovery and reserves is needed daily. If the Davos format delivers this – real results for Ukraine – Ukraine will be represented there. No one needs empty politics or talks with no results.

We must focus on the situation inside the country. Every official, local authorities, all heads of state-owned companies and energy companies – everyone must be right here, in Ukraine, working in cities, in villages, in the areas where restoration and protection are needed. As of this evening, more than one million consumers in Kyiv alone are without electricity. A significant number of buildings are without heat – more than 4,000 apartment blocks. All efforts must be directed toward easing the situation. Government officials must put forward non-linear proposals on how to protect lives and reorganize operations: how to support our people, how to support businesses. Maximum coordination with business is needed: how to redistribute power generation, existing consumption, so that people can feel the situation stabilizing, and what additional support programs are required for people. All of this must be discussed in detail, and answers must be provided to the questions I posed to government officials today. All of them. Personal responsibility lies with the Government – tomorrow, I expect a concrete, clear list of actions and solutions.

Every hour must be dedicated to the energy sector – Ukrenergo, the Government, regional authorities, local authorities, Kyiv authorities – everyone. Everyone.

There were reports on what was done over the course of the day in some communities – in the Kyiv region, Dnipro region, Kharkiv, Chernihiv region, Sumy region, and Rivne. I am grateful to those who are working efficiently. The situation in Zaporizhzhia is extremely difficult – “shahed” drones have been striking the city all day. I instructed that more assets and more crews be deployed for protection, and there are specific tasks to adjust logistics – the Ministry of Defense is working on this.

The Minister of Internal Affairs reported on the operation of assistance and heating points in Kyiv and in other regions. The Border Guard Service and Customs must ensure the swiftest possible clearance of equipment entering Ukraine. And if there are any delays, the response must be immediate.

Today, there is also a personnel decision. Oleksandr Kubrakov will be responsible for infrastructure issues and relations with communities from his position in the Office of the President. I have appointed Kubrakov as my Adviser, including on the situation in Kyiv. I will expect proposals. I will continue to involve professional people from Team Ukraine who can join the public service. All forces must now be working for Ukraine. And that is how it will be.

Glory to Ukraine!

Nominal coupons + TIPS did $775bn/day in par value trading volume during December, and that’s not including futures. So yes, this is a pebble.

Pretty skeptical it becomes an avalanche but it certainly could; if the US actually invades Greenland very likely it will.

Also it’s important to NOT think of this as a direct move *by the Danish government*. The pension’s board has a Ministry of Finance member, but 9/10 are non-government. This is an independent move undertaken by non-government actors, not a diplomatic decision.

Europe:

As the previous world order crumbles, a new one is taking its place.

With US stability and trustworthiness disappearing in an orange fog, Europe is building a new defence alliance based on the “coalition of the willing” plus Ukraine.

We are indeed living in interesting times.

— Maria Drutska (@mariadrutska.bsky.social) January 20, 2026 at 3:27 AM

From Militarnyi:

Europe is considering the Сoalition of the Willing as the basis for a new military alliance without US participation, but with the likely membership of Ukraine.

This was reported by Politico, citing sources among European officials.

Europe is concerned about US President Donald Trump’s policy on Greenland, as well as his threats to impose sanctions on a number of countries.

Many consider this a clear and unprovoked “attack” on allies across the Atlantic.

“I think it’s seen as a step too far. Europe is being criticized for its weakness in front of Trump. There is some truth to that, but there are also red lines,” said an anonymous European diplomat.

Senior European officials increasingly believe that the US is no longer a reliable trading partner and security ally. Therefore, in their opinion, “coordinated steps” must be taken to adapt to the new reality.

Some in Europe find it easy to imagine a future without the US. In particular, this applies to countries that are part of the Сoalition of the Willing and cooperate with Ukraine virtually without Washington’s involvement. These are European Union member states, as well as non-EU countries, including the United Kingdom and Norway.

It is noted that within the coalition, national security advisers from 35 governments maintain regular contact, often meeting online and in person.

According to people familiar with the work of this group, the level of trust within it is high.

It is possible that the Сoalition of the Willing format could potentially become the basis for a new security alliance in an era when the US no longer supports NATO and European security to the same extent as before. The new agreement does not rule out cooperation with America, but it does not take it for granted either.

Ukraine is also part of the Сoalition of the Willing and is currently considered the most militarized country among its members.

Taking into account the military power of France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom, the potential armed force of the Сoalition of the Willing will be significant and will include both nuclear and non-nuclear states.

Back to Ukraine.

War for Ukraine Day 1,425: The Small Hours of the Night Are Once Again the Deadliest Hours

Today started with a deadly attack on civilians and civilian targets in Kharkiv, among other parts of Ukraine, and it finishes with attacks in the small hours.

From morning russian missiles to afternoon glide bombs, it has been a day of relentless strikes on Kharkiv. I’m just hoping for a quiet night for once.

It’s not ok to watch an entire nation being bombed into freezing in brutal subzero t°.
It’s not ok to pretend russia wants peace while it targets homes, hospitals, and energy grid, aiming to destroy Ukraine.
It’s not ok to delay air defences while civilians sleep in cold shelters and darkness.

There Will Be a New Approach to the Use of Air Defense by the Air Force – Address by the President

19 January 2026 – 20:48

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Briefly about this day. Air defense: there will be a new approach to the use of air defense by the Air Force, specifically regarding mobile fire groups, interceptor drones, and other means of short-range air defense. This system will be transformed. I approved the appointment of a new Deputy Commander of the Air Force – Pavlo Yelizarov. In the army, he is known for Lazar, a special unit that operates – and operates effectively. Together with Ukraine’s Minister of Defense and the military command, a new organization for the entire component of this particular type of air defense must – and will – be developed.

We had a detailed discussion during the energy coordination call on recovery efforts in the regions after Russian strikes. The situation is extremely difficult in all border and frontline regions. First and foremost in Kharkiv and the region, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro region, Chernihiv, and Sumy region. Work continues in Odesa – there are tasks to be done. Special attention is being paid to Kyiv and the region – the situation is currently the most difficult there, and additional repair crews have been brought in for Kyiv, including from Ukrzaliznytsia and other state-owned companies.

We agreed with Prime Minister of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko that the Government must adopt the necessary decisions for energy workers this week. There must be additional monthly payments, in light of this emergency situation – for each month – for those of our people who work directly on the ground after the strikes, at the accident sites, in repair crews. The state must be grateful to everyone who ensures that Ukraine restores what the Russians destroy.

In the coming days, we must remain extremely vigilant. Russia has prepared for a strike – a massive strike – and is waiting for the moment to carry it out. Please pay close attention to all air raid alerts, and every region must be ready to respond as quickly as possible and support people.

Today, representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine provided reports. Major General Yevhenii Khmara reported on combat operations and further personnel restructuring of the Service. I approved operations that will strengthen us. Major General Oleksandr Poklad reported on countering Russian subversive activities. The Russians are constantly trying to influence Ukraine from within – in particular through attacks on well-known Ukrainians. We are defending Ukraine. There is an important result from the Security Service in combat operations on the frontline – they captured a Russian who killed Ukrainians who had been taken prisoner. This happened in October of last year in the Kursk region – nine of our warriors were killed. May their memory be eternal! We will find every Russian murderer. Every single one will be held accountable. I instructed Oleksandr Poklad to provide the public with all the necessary details. Lieutenant General Vasyl Maliuk delivered a report – there will be active asymmetric operations against Russia, and there are resources for this.

And one more point.

A report by our delegation: they held meetings with envoys of the U.S. President. It is important that Ukraine is constructive. It is important that Ukraine is genuinely working toward a diplomatic solution. It is important that support for Ukraine must be sufficient. We are doing everything for this.

Glory to Ukraine!

🇬🇪🇮🇷Georgia is strategically very important to the Iranian regime.
Not marginal. Not incidental.
Under Georgian Dream, Georgia has become a country Iran actively relies on to move money, goods, and political influence.

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:10 AM

That importance did not emerge by accident. It grew as Georgian Dream steadily lowered political, diplomatic, and economic barriers between Tbilisi and Tehran, even as Iran faced deeper international isolation.

In 2024 alone, Georgia’s prime minister
@PM_Kobakhidze
made two official visits to Iran. These were not routine diplomatic exchanges. They occurred at moments when most Western-aligned governments were deliberately keeping distance.

At the same time, trade patterns shifted sharply.
Imports from Iran surged, while Georgian exports remained minimal. The relationship became one-sided, and dependency quietly replaced reciprocity.

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:10 AM

The most sensitive part of this trade is oil and petroleum products.
For Iran, oil is not just commerce. It is regime survival under sanctions. Every additional outlet matters.

Why Georgia? Because it offers something Iran urgently needs:
easy company registration, limited scrutiny, and access to Western markets through existing trade agreements.

Iranian business platforms openly describe Georgia as a place where Iranian goods can be imported, processed on paper, and re-exported as “Georgian” with fewer obstacles. This guidance is public, detailed, and explicit.

🇺🇸US authorities have already sanctioned Georgia-registered companies for Iran-related schemes. By enabling sanctions evasion that Washington is actively trying to stop, Georgian Dream is acting directly against US strategic interests.

When Georgian Dream’s parliamentary leader Gia Volski publicly downplays Western pressure and speaks of cooperation with Iran as manageable, he reveals the political logic behind this openness.

— Terje Helland (@terjehelland.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 9:10 AM

Put together, the picture is clear.
Georgia, under Georgian Dream, is not merely exposed to Iran.
It has become operationally crucial to the Iranian regime.
That usefulness has consequences far beyond Georgia’s borders.

The idea here seems to be to create a new United Nations or, at least, a new Security Council, controlled by Trump and whomever he designates as his successor in perpetuity. It will do absolutely nothing for Gaza. It will further enrich Trump. The Israelis are not amused:

Several ministers in Israel’s small security cabinet blamed Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, for the composition of the Executive Board for the Board of Peace, which includes Turkish and Qatari representation that Israel firmly opposes.

According to remarks made during a closed discussion on Sunday, participants alleged that Kushner was “taking revenge” on Israel for its refusal to reopen the Rafah Crossing, and that his ties in the region were shaping the plan’s structure.

Ministers said Kushner “derailed” Israel’s 2020 sovereignty declaration and continues to pose obstacles because of close political and economic links with Arab leaders.

Israeli officials stressed they work routinely and effectively with the American administration. In a past cabinet session, one participant claimed Kushner has “fantasies about world peace” that do not always align with Israeli interests.

The cabinet said the Prime Minister’s Office directive for Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to contact the US Secretary of State was not a bid to shift responsibility, as some media suggested, but an effort to manage the crisis methodically.

Officials described it as lowering the level of handling to foreign ministers, between Sa’ar and Rubio, rather than escalating matters between the prime minister and President Trump. The cabinet agreed to oppose Turkish or Qatari representation in any body that would manage Gaza and to continue updates over the next two weeks.

Israeli officials said the dispute is less about the existence of a Palestinian civilian administration in Gaza and more about who accompanies it, with particular concern over Turkey’s involvement.

The inclusion of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan as a central figure would cross a red line, they said, noting that Ankara is not viewed in Jerusalem as neutral or legitimate for Gaza’s management because of political and ideological ties with Hamas.

Ukraine, which has a strong army and real combat experience, is seen as an important part of the future security system.

— WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) January 19, 2026 at 8:22 AM

From Politico:

LONDON — As with many failing relationships, it’s been a story of arguments, unspoken tensions and trying to keep up appearances in public since Donald Trump reentered the White House ayear ago.

But for many European governments, including America’s longest-standing and most loyal allies, Trump’s threat of punitive tariffs against anyone who tries to stop him taking Greenland was the final straw. Divorce, they believe, is now inevitable.

In private, dismayed European officials describe Trump’s rush to annex the sovereign Danish territory as “crazy” and “mad,” asking if he is caught up in his “warrior mode” after his Venezuela adventure — and saying he deserves Europe’s toughest retaliation for what many see as a clear and unprovoked “attack” against allies on the other side of the Atlantic.

“I think it is perceived as one step too far,” said one European diplomat, who like others was granted anonymity to speak candidly. “Europe has been criticized for being weak against Trump. There is some truth in that, but there are red lines.”

Senior European officials increasingly believe it’s time to face the truth that Trump’s America is no longer a reliable trade partner, still less a dependable security ally, and urgently look to the future. “There is a shift in U.S. policy and in many ways it is permanent,” according to a senior official with a European government. “Waiting it out is not a solution. What needs to be done is an orderly and coordinated movement to a new reality.”

That coordination has already begun, as has the big conversation about what comes next.

Barring a radical shift in the approach of the United States, this process seems likely to end in a radical reshaping of the West that would upend the global balance of power. The implications range from transatlantic economic damage as trade tensions rise, to security risks as Europe attempts to defend itself without American help before it is fully ready to do so.

There would likely be costs to the United States as well, such as in its ability to project hard power into Africa and the Middle East without access to the network of bases, airstrips and logistical support that Europe currently provides.

Alongside all the talk of retaliation by targeting U.S. trade, diplomats and government officials in national capitals are also considering what a long-term split from Washington might bring.

For most the prospect is a painful one, ending 80 years of peaceful cooperation, mutual support and profitable trade and dealing a death blow to NATO in its current form. Plenty of governments want to salvage what they can, while Italy’s hard right leader, Giorgia Meloni, is trying to rebuild relations.

But for some government officials, a post-U.S. future for Western allies isn’t hard to imagine.

For starters, European states, including those not in the EU like Britain and Norway, have spent much of Trump’s second term working in an increasingly effective group that already operates without America: the so-called coalition of the willing to support Ukraine.

National security advisers from 35 governments are in regular contact, meeting frequently online and in person, as well as interacting via less formal text messaging. They are accustomed to seeking multilateral solutions in a world where Trump is a big part of the problem.

Levels of trust in these circles are generally high, according to people familiar with the way the group operates. Nor is it just at the level of officials: National leaders are themselves rolling up their sleeves and working in intimate new groupings.

Leaders including the U.K.’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Friedrich Merz, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Alexander Stubb of Finland and Meloni of Italy regularly text with each other — often in the same group chat.

War for Ukraine Day 1,424: If You Look Around the Table & Can’t Tell Who the Mark Is, You’re the Mark

by Adam L Silverman|  January 18, 20269:18 pm| 24 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Pivoting off of last week’s widely reported announcement by Macron that France had replaced the US in supplying the vast majority of intelligence to Ukraine, the Kremlin recognized the opening this created in the information environment (IE) and decided to start up an influence line of effort: that French news is reporting that the Ukrainians fed false information to the US last year, which they were then able to trace all the way through to the Kremlin. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!

Here’s the original and accurate reporting about French-Ukrainian intelligence sharing:

France has replaced the U.S. as the main intelligence provider, now supplying two-thirds of the data.

This shift allows Kyiv to reduce its reliance on U.S. intel. The U.S. has previously temporarily cut off intelligence to Ukraine.

— Tim Mak (@timkmak.bsky.social) January 16, 2026 at 9:22 AM

From The Kyiv Independent:

France is now providing two-thirds of the intelligence supplied to Ukraine by its partners, President Emmanuel Macron said on Jan. 15.

The change works to solve Kyiv’s heavy dependence on the U.S. for military intelligence, which has been wielded as leverage against Ukraine by the Trump administration on several occasions.

In March 2025, after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly berated Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, Washington notoriously stripped Kyiv of all intelligence provisions.

The flow of intelligence was soon restored, but in November that year, Trump once again threatened to cut it off if Zelensky did not accept an openly capitulatory peace plan prepared by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in collaboration with Russia.

Despite the threats, temporary cut-off and the often-strained relations between Trump and Zelensky, the U.S. continues to provide extensive intelligence support to Ukraine.

Intelligence shared by partners — from fresh, high-quality satellite imagery to signals intelligence and cyber — plays a crucial role in Ukraine’s war effort, especially for information on Russian movements and equipment beyond the range of reconnaissance drones.

Since such intelligence sharing is of a highly diverse character, and includes highly technical support like early warning for ballistic missile launches — which only the U.S. can provide — quantifying such support and comparing the input of different nations is questionable.

“Where Ukraine used to be extremely dependent on American intelligence capacity, with a huge majority (provided by the U.S) a year ago,” Macron said, “over (the last) year, two-thirds is today provided by France.”

The Kyiv Independent reached out to Ukraine’s military intelligence agency to confirm France’s ousting of the U.S. as Kyiv’s top intelligence provider, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

Macron’s comments came during his New Year’s address to the French military at the Istres air force base, where he praised Europe’s efforts to continue to provide military support to Kyiv amid the Trump administration’s ending of almost all newly funded aid.

The French president also used the occasion to issue a challenge to the country’s domestic arms industry, saying that the military could need to look to foreign manufacturers to fuel its quick rearmament if in-country production does not ramp up fast enough.

Here’s the new disinformation and agitprop campaign:

And here’s the debunking from Ukrainian National News:

Today, distorted information is being spread on social media about an alleged report by a French TV channel, which discredits the activities of Ukrainian intelligence and special services regarding interaction with international partners. It was claimed that Ukrainian special services allegedly deliberately sent false strategic information to American intelligence, and later discovered that these materials had been transferred to Russia. The published information has no objective basis or real grounds, writes UNN with reference to sources.

Details

According to sources in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, the published information has no objective basis or real grounds. In addition, the information from the French media report was further distorted by Russian propagandists.

Currently, Kremlin bot farms are once again spreading fakes, taking advantage of the Ukrainian delegation’s presence abroad to counteract the negotiation process on ending the war

– the source notes.

The interlocutor in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense emphasizes that Ukrainian intelligence, like other authorized Ukrainian bodies and individuals, continues to actively interact with international partners, including the United States, on the principles of professionalism and responsibility.

Our state remains committed to the process of a diplomatic end to the war and seeks to achieve a stable and just peace for Ukraine

– the source adds.

Addition

Today, information was spread on social networks, particularly X, that the French news channel LCI stated that Ukrainian special services deliberately sent false strategic information to American intelligence, and later discovered that these materials had been transferred to Russia and subsequently used by Russian troops.

Here are some of today’s Ukrainian outgoing fires:

Reports say a drone threat is ongoing right now across several Russian regions, including Belgorod, Kursk, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Saratov, Tambov, Volgograd, and Rostov, as well as in the temporarily occupied Luhansk region.

In the Coming Week, We Will Work to Build New Pressure and a Clear Global Position on Russia – Address by the President

18 January 2026 – 21:07

I wish you good health, fellow Ukrainians!

All day today, I have been receiving briefings from Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal. Restoration efforts are ongoing after Russian strikes. Sadly, new hits occur every night. Russia’s main target remains unchanged: our energy sector. Practically around the clock, and in repair crews only, nearly 58,000 people are working on power grids and generation facilities, as well as on heating networks. Resources from Ukrzaliznytsia and other state-owned companies have been brought in. In Kyiv, where the situation is extremely tough, an additional 50 crews from across the country have been deployed. There are still buildings without heating, and for virtually every one of these buildings, the necessary equipment and the necessary crews are being dispatched manually. Things are also difficult in the Kyiv region – especially in the northern part of the region, and in the Boryspil district – as well as in border and frontline regions, where repairs to networks and repairs to facilities are complicated by almost constant shelling and constant strikes. This is Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia regions – these regions are receiving particular attention. A great deal of work was carried out in the Poltava region and in Odesa to stabilize the energy situation.

I want to thank all the crews who are working, the energy companies, both public and private, and all the city and community leaders who are truly standing with their people and really helping us.

Decisions to increase electricity imports are now being implemented. I want to thank our partners who are fulfilling our agreements on the supply of essential resources, machinery, and equipment. In particular, the implementation of our agreements with Italy has begun in recent days. Giorgia Meloni and I discussed this: now support packages – these are truly vital items, truly vital equipment – are being delivered to Ukraine. I would also like to recognize our Naftogaz team. Throughout the week, the company’s facilities in various regions have been under attack, with the latest strike on gas production – it happened yesterday. It is very important that private Ukrainian companies are working together with the Government, together with the state, and together with the public system to strengthen our country’s resilience. This is exactly how it should be – everyone working together, everyone on team Ukraine.

Today, I also received briefings from our delegation in the United States: Rustem Umerov reported on meetings with envoys of President Trump. Several rounds of talks have already taken place. Work is underway on documents needed to end the war. And it is important that Ukraine’s team is fully informing the American side about what is happening in Ukraine and about Russia’s constant strikes on our energy system. If the Russians seriously wanted to end the war, they’d focus on diplomacy – not on missile strikes, blackouts, and even attempts to damage our nuclear power plants. We have information about the sites Russia reconnoitered in preparation for strikes. Everything clearly shows that diplomacy is not a priority for Russia. This must be acknowledged. Pressure on the aggressor and the real cause of this war must continue. The cause is in Moscow. In the coming week, we will work to build this new pressure and a clear global position on Russia.

I also want to commend our warriors today: despite everything, despite harsh weather and constant Russian assaults, there are good results in defending our positions. It matters that, on many fronts, our warriors are doing exactly what Ukraine needs. I thank all of you, guys! Huliaipole: the 5th Assault Brigade; the 1st and 225th Separate Assault Regiments. Kupyansk direction: true examples for others – the 429th Unmanned Systems Brigade “Achilles,” the 13th Operational Brigade of the National Guard “Khartiia,” the 101st Guard Brigade of the General Staff, and the 475th Separate Assault Regiment. Thank you very much! Also, the Kharkiv region: the 127th Heavy Mechanized Brigade. Thank you so much! Pokrovsk direction: our 25th Airborne Brigade and our units of the 425th Separate Assault Regiment. Thank you! The Sumy region: the 71st Jaeger Brigade. Well done! Ocheretyne direction: the warriors of the 14th Operational Brigade of the National Guard “Chervona Kalyna” and the 25th Separate Assault Battalion. Well done! And our positions in the Orikhiv direction: the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade. Thank you, warriors! Glory to everyone who is fighting for Ukraine just as fiercely as for themselves. I thank everyone who works so that our Ukraine lives.

Glory to Ukraine!

Poland:

⚡️ Update: ‘Warmth from Poland’ — More than $650,000 raised to buy generators for Kyiv amid energy crisis.

After reaching the initial target, organizers increased the goal to 2 million zloty ($550,000), which has been surpassed with donations now exceeding 2.4 million zloty ($660,000).

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) January 18, 2026 at 5:26 PM

From The Kyiv Independent:

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the latest figure.

A volunteer fundraising platform in Poland has raised more than 2.4 million Polish zloty (around $660,000) to purchase generators for Kyiv, its organizers announced on Jan. 18, as Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continue amid freezing winter conditions.

Launched under the name “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv,” the fundraiser initially set out to raise 400,000 zloty ($110,000) to purchase generators. After quickly hitting that target, organizers raised the goal to 2 million zloty ($550,000) — a figure that has since been surpassed, with donations now exceeding 2.4 million zloty.

“The response of Poles has exceeded our expectations,” the organizers said. “You have shown that you care about the fate of your neighbors. We can do much more than we planned.”

Ukraine’s energy situation has deteriorated following repeated Russian mass strikes on power infrastructure. A state of emergency was declared on Jan. 14, while weather forecasts warn temperatures could drop below –15 degrees Celsius (–5 degrees Fahrenheit) in late January.

Organizers said the funds will help residents facing extreme conditions in Kyiv.

“People are staying in unheated apartments and basements,” they said. “Lack of electricity means no way to cook a hot meal, discharged phones, and loss of contact with loved ones during attacks.”

The initiative is organized jointly with several civic groups, including Euromaidan-Warsaw, the Democracy Foundation, Sestry.eu, the Open Dialogue Foundation, the PRB Foundation, and the Entrepreneurs Help initiative.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar welcomed the effort, thanking Polish donors for their support. He said the assistance is “important” and “truly saving human lives” amid the crisis.

Since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has systematically targeted Ukraine’s power grid, damaging power plants, substations, and transmission lines. The attacks have caused widespread blackouts and forced emergency outages across the country.

Ukrainian officials described the current energy situation in Kyiv as “extremely serious.” Ukraine’s Security Service has said Russia’s ongoing strikes on energy infrastructure amount to crimes against humanity.

In 3d, Polish people collected $300k+ for power generators for Kyiv that is enduring heavy blackouts amidst subzero t°.

The fundraiser got more popular than expected, ensuring organizers can bring more light and heat into Ukrainian homes after russian attacks.

Sweden:

⚡️ Swedish authorities have exposed a network of pro-war Russian nuns accused of using local churches to fund military operations and conduct espionage.

— UNITED24 Media (@united24media.com) January 18, 2026 at 3:10 PM

From United24 Media:

A network of Orthodox nuns operating in Sweden has been exposed for allegedly supporting Russian military aggression and maintaining links to Russian military intelligence, The Telegraph reported on January 18.

According to the reports, members of the St. Elisabeth Convent, originally based in Belarus, were active in over 20 churches across Sweden.

The women, referred to locally as “Z-nuns” for their public display of the pro-invasion “Z” symbol, sold religious souvenirs in Swedish parishes under the guise of charitable work. Swedish authorities now suspect the proceeds were used to support Russian military units involved in the war against Ukraine.

In an official warning published by the Church of Sweden, the organization accused the convent’s representatives of using religious spaces to promote Russian nationalism and fund Russia’s war effort. The statement urged Catholic and Orthodox communities across the country to avoid all cooperation with the convent.

The Church also noted the convent’s alleged ties to the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, commonly known as the GRU.

“This is not simply about charity,” said Kristina Smith, the Church of Sweden’s crisis planning chief. “It is part of a broader effort by Russian actors to gain access to religious spaces near military infrastructure in NATO countries.”

Swedish security services are also investigating the Orthodox Church in Västerås, built just 300 meters from Stockholm-Västerås Airport.

Authorities suspect the location could be used for surveillance or other intelligence-gathering activities. City officials have stated that the church is being investigated for potential reconnaissance operations against Sweden.

Michael Ojerbo, a local priest who had hosted the nuns at his church in Täby, told Metro that he had not anticipated the potential risks and now regrets the invitation. He denied that their presence could have significantly financed Russian military operations, claiming the sales were minor.

Earlier, France24 revealed that a Russian Orthodox church in Västerås, Sweden—built just 300 meters from a strategic airport and funded by a Rosatom-linked foundation—was under investigation for suspected espionage activities.

Obligatory: Send in the nuns! (5;40 if the time didn’t queue up correctly)

Resistance under Russian-occupation is beyond dangerous — even the smallest sign of supporting Ukraine can result in imprisonment, torture, and even death.

— The Kyiv Independent (@kyivindependent.com) January 18, 2026 at 1:57 PM

From The Kyiv Independent:

Resistance under Russian-occupation is beyond dangerous — even the smallest sign of supporting Ukraine can result in imprisonment, torture, and even death.

The list of documented war crimes against Ukrainians in Russian-occupied territories is near-endless. Men are forcibly mobilized into Russia’s army and forced to face the guns of their fellow countrymen. Sexual violence against women is used by Russian soldiers as a weapon of war. Children are either abducted, or forced into military camps and indoctrinated to fight against Ukraine in the future.

And yet Ukrainians in Russian-occupied territories continue to choose to risk everything in the name of defiance. And one of the options open to them is to join a resistance movement run by Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SSO).

In an interview with the Kyiv Independent, a commander of SSO’s resistance movement shared insights into how it operates under Russian occupation.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity. The identity of the commander has not been disclosed for security reasons.

The Kyiv Independent: What exactly is the SSO resistance movement and when and why did it appear?

Commander: In general, the resistance in Ukraine appeared a long time ago, ever since Ukrainians have started to fight for their independence, especially against Russia. The SSO resistance movement appeared in Ukraine in 2016, when the SSO was created.

Its purpose was to involve as much of the civilian population as possible in the fight against Russia, and especially that part of the population that, for different reasons, remains in the occupied territories.

Essentially, our goal is the same as that for all the other Armed Forces of Ukraine and of the Ukrainian people as a whole — to drive out the Russian army and their occupational authorities from our territories, thereby restoring our territorial integrity and defending our sovereignty.

The Kyiv Independent: What are the main methods and forms of resistance you use?

Commander: We essentially use classic methods both violent and non-violent. We train civilians to use small arms and special improvised explosive devices, which they use to destroy the enemy in the territories occupied by Russia.

We also widely use non-violent forms to influence Russia’s military, to intimidate them in various ways and disrupt their efforts. And also to encourage our citizens who remain under occupation to fight the enemy or to intimidate those who collaborate with the Russians.

The Kyiv Independent: How do you train people who are under occupation?

Commander: Some of the people we involve were trained even before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and they just remained in the occupied territories. Now they use the skills and abilities they acquired before the invasion to carry out our tasks.

We also trained people back when there was still an opportunity for people to move across the front line.

The Kyiv Independent: You say that anyone can join your movement, even teachers — how can they specifically help?

Commander: First of all, not just anyone can join us. We don’t work with minors, we don’t work with people who are ill. And if we understand that a person, based on their interviews, has a certain motivation, certain capabilities…

But a particular feature of our resistance movement is that every person, regardless of profession, can be involved in the resistance movement. And in one way or another, they can contribute to carrying out tasks or carry them out directly.

For example, that same teacher, by carrying out lessons at school with children, can provide proper upbringing — give the right messages to young people who, in the future, will live there and understand that they need to wait out the time while the occupation lasts. And not succumb to manipulation by the Russians.

We also try to protect people in every way possible because there are actually fewer and fewer of them left there.

The Kyiv Independent:  What is the main motivation of people who join the resistance movement?

Commander: Primarily, people’s motivation is rejection of Russians on our territories.

Every conscious person understands what they came here for and sees what they are doing. Those who are older or middle-aged understand and know from history what the presence of the Soviet Union on our territory meant. And of course, no one wants the Soviet Union 2.0.

Let alone young people who are used to living freely, making free decisions about how to live, where to live, without instructions from the Kremlin. Of course, they do not want this and they understand that freedom must be defended.

Many people also join out of revenge, because their relatives were killed, or their property has been destroyed by tanks and shells, with no justification.

Much more at the link.

War for Ukraine Day 1,423: Only Efficient, Effective Reciprocity Will Be Effective

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Last night the State Department released its 2026 white supremacist and nationalist manifesto doing business as its 2026 strategic plan. I’ll try to get to it tomorrow. It’s nothing you didn’t see in the new National Security Strategy or in any Tump, Miller, Vance, or Rubio social media post or news media hit.

One of the key portions of Just War theory is reciprocity. In application it means that one party to the conflict won’t target civilians and civilian infrastructure, such as power generation and transmission, not because it can’t, not because they might night be legitimate dual use targets, but because if it does, then the other parties to the conflict will reciprocate. This is also a reason why you don’t want to torture POWs and other captives. Unfortunately, Putin doesn’t care about Just War theory, nor the Geneva Conventions, nor any other ethic or moral that would constrain his action. This means that one of the ways for Ukraine to get Putin to stop targeting Ukrainian power generation and transmission is to attack Russian power generation and transmission.

A power substation is on fire in Krasnozavodsk, Moscow region. Local reports say it caused power disruptions in parts of the area.

Yeysk is in Krasnodar Krai.

The best way for Ukraine to get Putin to change Russia’s current targeting is for Ukraine to blackout as much of Russia as possible. Especially Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, and other major ethnic Russian population centers.

Part of how we got here is because Trump has been jerking the Ukrainians around since he returned to office.

On May 10th, Macron informed Trump that Ukraine had accepted his ceasefire proposal.

Putin flatly rejected it.

Trump responded by shifting the goalposts. His reversal sabotaged the very ultimatum European leaders had traveled to Kyiv to deliver. He later blamed Ukraine.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@kateinkharkiv.bsky.social) January 17, 2026 at 11:28 AM

The same cycle repeated in December: Trump made demands, Ukraine agreed, and Russia refused. Yet, in his recent Reuters interview, Trump still had the audacity to blame Ukraine for the deadlock.

I think he also likes tormenting those he thinks he can bully, he hates President Zelenskyy because he has misplaced the blame for his first impeachment on to him, and because he thinks there’s money to be made by cutting a deal with Putin regardless of how bad that will be for Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Russia and its supporters are desperate to hide one simple fact:

In March 2022, they occupied almost 30% of Ukraine. Today, almost 4 years later, they occupy only about 20%.

Any war where the invader holds less territory after 4 years than after 1 month is a disaster

All Political and Legal Decisions to Increase Electricity Imports Have Already Been Made, and They Must Be Implemented Without Delay – Address by the President

17 January 2026 – 15:31

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today I have already held a detailed coordination call on all issues related to the emergency situation in the energy sector after the Russian strikes. There are many tasks, and the situation is extremely difficult after this night and “shahed” hits in the Kyiv region. Bucha, Hostomel, and Irpin – work is ongoing. The consequences of the strikes are also being dealt with in Odesa. Kharkiv – more than four hundred thousand people are facing a difficult situation with electricity, also as a result of the strikes. All repair crews and all necessary forces – everything is deployed. I am grateful to everyone who is working for restoration, for people, for their city, for their community. It is important that all political and legal decisions to increase electricity imports have already been made, and they must be implemented without delay. This applies to everyone – both state-owned companies and private ones – and I instructed government officials to address this promptly.

I thank every partner who is now ready to help Ukraine with equipment. There are arrangements for the import of generators and other equipment. We are accelerating all decisions as much as possible. Separately – regarding Kyiv. All government structures are involved, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs has deployed additional assistance points. There are also decisions concerning everything that may be needed, including hot meals for people – implementation must be significantly more active. Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories, and others must verify everything regarding the heating situation in residential buildings, as a significant number of buildings in Kyiv are still without heat.

We spoke with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine about air defense operations, about assessing the consequences of the strikes and the circumstances of every Russian attack. Everything the enemy does must be analyzed down to every detail – and our countermeasures, our protection, must become significantly stronger. And it will. There will also be decisions that are necessary to change our defense system, including personnel decisions. I thank everyone who is helping right now.

I also signed a new sanctions decision – these are sanctions against those who justify the aggression and are used by Russia in propaganda. I approved the next sanctions measures as well – decisions will follow shortly. Pressure on Russia must be maintained, and we will continue working on the synchronization of sanctions – not only regarding partners’ decisions within our jurisdiction, but also regarding Ukrainian sanctions decisions being reflected in the lists of partners. Even now, a significant share of partners’ personal sanctions, as well as entries in their lists against legal entities, is based on Ukraine’s proposals.

Today the Ukrainian delegation is already in the United States. Rustem Umerov, Kyrylo Budanov, and Davyd Arakhamiia. Toward the evening, Kyiv time, I expect the first reports regarding their meetings. The main task for the Ukrainian delegation is to present the full and accurate picture of what is happening and what Russian strikes are causing. Among the consequences of this terror is the discrediting of the diplomatic process: people lose faith in diplomacy, and Russian attacks constantly undermine even the limited opportunities for dialogue that existed before. The American side must understand this. Progress is also needed on the documents that have been in preparation.

Ukraine has never been and will never be a roadblock to peace, and it is now up to our partners to determine whether diplomacy moves forward. I thank everyone who stands with us, who stands with Ukraine.

Glory to Ukraine!

Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, today: a massive protest outside the U.S. embassy against the sale/occupation of Greenland by the United States

— 🦋Special Kherson Cat🐈🇺🇦 (@specialkhersoncat.bsky.social) January 17, 2026 at 3:27 PM

From DW:

Massive demonstrations organized by Greenlandic associations have been taking place across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday to protest US President Donald Trump‘s ambitions to take over the Arctic island.

The aim of the protests is “to send a clear and unified message of respect for Greenland’s democracy and fundamental human rights,” said Uagut, an association of Greenlanders in Denmark, on its website.

Thousands of demonstrators assembled in Copenhagen’s City Hall Square at 12:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT), chanting “Greenland is not for sale” and holding banners with slogans such as “Hands off Greenland.” They then marched towards the US embassy.

“I am very grateful for the ‌huge support we as Greenlanders receive… We are also sending a message to the world that you all must wake up,” Julie Rademacher, chair of Uagut, told the protesters.

“Greenland and the Greenlanders have involuntarily ‍become the front in the fight for democracy and human rights,” she added.

Protests were also ongoing in the Danish cities of Aarhus, Aalborg, and Odense.

The demonstration in Greenland‘s capital, Nuuk, began 4:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT), according to the organizers, who say it is “against the United States’ illegal plans to take control of Greenland.”

Several thousand protesters, including the territory’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who was seen waving a Greenlandic flag, chanted slogans and sang traditional Inuit songs in the light rain.

Many of them wore caps bearing the slogan “Make America Go Away,” an AFP reporter noted, referencing Trump’s “Make America Great Again” brand.

Demonstrators marched to the US consulate carrying Greenlandic flags. The territory’s total population is about 57,000.

This is just absolutely stupidly self defeating. As we all know, none of these states will be paying the tariffs. Americans will be paying them. This is taxing Americans in an attempt to use economic power to coerce Danes, Greenlanders, and other Europeans into doing what Trump wants. The problem, of course, is that Trump is an economic ignoramus who has surrounded himself with either other economic ignoramuses – Navarro, Hassett, Lutnick – or people who know better, but will go along to ensure their proximity to his power in order to enrich themselves – Bessent.

The EU:

Responding to Trump’s Greenland remarks, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said sovereignty and territorial integrity are core principles of international law, voiced full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, and warned tariffs would harm transatlantic ties.

The international liberal order is ending. In fact, it may already be dead.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Miller said: “We live in a world … that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power … These are the iron laws of the world.”

— Maria Drutska (@mariadrutska.bsky.social) January 17, 2026 at 10:28 AM

From the European Council on Foreign Relations director Mark Leonard at Politico:

The international liberal order is ending. In fact, it may already be dead. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said as much last week as he gloated over the U.S. intervention in Venezuela and the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro: “We live in a world … that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power … These are the iron laws of the world.”

But America’s 47th president is equally responsible for another death — that of the united West.

And while Europe’s leaders have fallen over themselves to sugarcoat U.S. President Donald Trump’s illegal military operation in Venezuela and ignore his brazen demands on Greenland, Europeans themselves have already realized Washington is more foe than friend.

This is one of the key findings of a poll conducted in November 2025 by my colleagues at the European Council on Foreign Relations and Oxford University’s Europe in a Changing World research project, based on interviews with 26,000 individuals in 21 countries. Only one in six respondents considered the U.S. to be an ally, while a sobering one in five viewed it as a rival or adversary. In Germany, France and Spain that number approaches 30 percent, and in Switzerland — which Trump singled out for higher tariffs — it’s as high as 39 percent.

This decline in support for the U.S. has been precipitous across the continent. But as power shifts around the globe, perceptions of Europe have also started to change.

With Trump pursuing an America First foreign policy, which often leaves Europe out in the cold, other countries are now viewing the EU as a sovereign geopolitical actor in its own right. This shift has been most dramatic in Russia, where voters have grown less hostile toward the U.S. Two years ago, 64 percent of Russians viewed the U.S. as an adversary, whereas today that number sits at 37 percent. Instead, they have turned their ire toward Europe, which 72 percent now consider either an advisory or a rival — up from 69 percent a year ago.

Meanwhile, Washington’s policy shift toward Russia has also meant a shift in its Ukraine policy. And as a result, Ukrainians, who once saw the U.S. as their greatest ally, are now looking to Europe for protection. They’re distinguishing between U.S. and European policy, and nearly two-thirds expect their country’s relations with the EU to get stronger, while only one-third say the same about the U.S.

Even beyond Europe, however, the single biggest long-term impact of Trump’s first year in office is how he has driven people away from the U.S. and closer to China, with Beijing’s influence expected to grow across the board. From South Africa and Brazil to Turkey, majorities expect their country’s relationship with China to deepen over the next five years. And in these countries, more respondents see Beijing as an ally than Washington.

Of course, this poll was conducted before Trump’s intervention in Venezuela and before his remarks about taking over Greenland. But with even the closest of allies now worried about falling victim to a predatory U.S., these trends — of countries pulling away from the U.S. and toward China, and a Europe isolated from its transatlantic partner — are likely to accelerate.

The good news from our poll is that despite the reticence of their leaders, Europeans are both aware of the state of the world and in favor of a lot of what needs to be done to improve the continent’s position. As we have seen, they harbor no illusions about the U.S. under Trump. They realize they’re living in an increasingly dangerous, multipolar world. And majorities support boosting defense spending, reintroducing mandatory conscription, and even entertaining the prospect of a European nuclear deterrent.

The rules-based order is giving way to a world of spheres of influence, where might makes right and the West is split from within. In such a world, you are either a pole with your own sphere of influence or a bystander in someone else’s. European leaders should heed their voters and ensure the continent belongs in the first category — not the second.

The narrative of exceptional Ukrainian resilience is one of the most harmful tropes I’ve seen during this war.

We are no more resilient than any other nation. You cannot expect us to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders while being bombed and burying our friends, only to pat us on the back for how well we take the hit.

Our Intelligence Reports That Russia Is Preparing New Massive Attacks – Address by the President

16 January 2026 – 20:07

I wish you good health!

Today involved a lot of international work. Our partners. The President of the Czech Republic is in Ukraine, and our cooperation is quite significant, particularly on weapons. We will continue the Czech initiative on artillery, which supports us, as well as joint production, especially regarding drones. It is important that Czechia also stands with us on political matters. I spoke with the UK Secretary of State – he is in Ukraine. We maintain constant contact with Keir, the Prime Minister, and all our partners. The United Kingdom is one of our biggest friends, and that will continue. Latvia – I had a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament. All our Baltic friends are among the leaders in political support for Ukraine. Thank you very much.

We are preparing for next week: for the meetings in Davos to be productive and right, clear content is needed – content of meetings, content of documents. Now is definitely not the time for loud, empty talks or formal gatherings. We need results to be achieved for real people – for Ukrainians, for all Europeans, and for Americans. Everyone equally needs peace, everyone needs real security, and everyone also needs normal economic development. And all of this must be reflected in the relevant documents we are preparing, including with the American side.

Today I held a briefing with government officials and the Office team. Our representatives – Rustem Umerov, Kyrylo Budanov, and Davyd Arakhamiia – are now on their way to the United States. We expect meetings with American colleagues very soon.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine and the Deputy Prime Minister reported today on energy: on the emergency situation in our various cities and communities caused by Russian strikes and harsh weather. Across the country, maximum resources have been deployed. Literally tens of thousands of people are currently working in repair crews, municipal services, and energy companies – and this joint work must continue at all levels of government, between government and business, and across all institutions and services. I want to thank all local leaders who are truly effective, who really stand with their people and provide assistance.

Particular tasks today have been assigned to air defense units and the military. Our intelligence reports that Russia is preparing new massive attacks. We are speaking frankly to our partners – both about air defense missiles and the systems we need so much. Supplies are insufficient. We are trying to speed things up, and it’s crucial that our partners hear us. Much is being done now at the level of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. But please remain attentive to air raid alerts. Please help those around you, those alone, those in need of your support. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is expanding the number of Points of Invincibility. The Government is working with energy companies and partners to secure more equipment and more reserves. But the key is that the world does not remain silent about this. Wars do not end without pressure. And it is precisely because pressure is insufficient that Russians are doing all of this. We must change this. I thank everyone working for Ukraine. I thank everyone who is in combat, in their positions, on duty, and at their posts. Ukraine stands strong thanks to your effectiveness.

Glory to Ukraine!

The First Lady of Ukraine and the President of the Czech Republic Visited One of the Equipped Shelters in the Kyiv Region and Discussed Further Support for Ukrainians

16 January 2026 – 21:55

In Kaharlyk, Kyiv region, the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, and the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, visited a shelter in one of the lyceums that the Olena Zelenska Foundation completed renovating two months ago.

The President’s wife thanked the Czech Republic for its consistent support of Ukrainians and spoke about the results of joint humanitarian projects implemented together with Czech partners.

“We are scaling up the Schools of Superheroes – educational spaces in medical facilities for children undergoing long-term treatment; we held the inclusive CosmoCamp recreation camp for children with disabilities; and we provided humanitarian assistance to large foster families from the Poltava and Kirovohrad regions. We especially value our foreign friends for such personal visits during this difficult winter for Ukrainians, when our people are simultaneously confronting the Russian invasion and harsh weather conditions,” the First Lady emphasized.

Olena Zelenska noted that the issue of children is a priority for the Foundation. Among its key focus areas are support for family-based care, access to education and extracurricular activities, and psychosocial support for adolescents and young people.

The First Lady also shared that the Foundation plans to renovate and equip at least 50 shelters this year, as well as renovate 10 sites, comprehensively covering both kitchen and shelter facilities at each location.

“The Foundation is always glad to welcome new international partners and every new opportunity to make the lives of Ukrainian children more comfortable, secure, and of higher quality,” Olena Zelenska said.

Reuters reports that Trump accused Zelensky of dragging out the war. He said that Putin is ready to end his four-year war against Ukraine, while Zelensky is less willing to make compromises.

From Reuters:

WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters that Ukraine – not Russia – is holding up a potential peace deal, rhetoric that stands in marked contrast to that of European allies, who have consistently argued Moscow has little interest in ending its war in Ukraine.

In an exclusive interview in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to wrap up his nearly four-year-old invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskiy, the U.S. president said, was more reticent.

“I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump said of the Russian president. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”

Asked why U.S.-led negotiations had not yet resolved Europe’s largest land conflict since World War Two, Trump responded: “Zelenskiy.”

Trump’s comments suggested renewed frustration with the Ukrainian leader. The two presidents have long had a volatile relationship, though their interactions seem to have improved over Trump’s first year back in office.

At times, Trump has been more willing to accept Putin’s assurances at face value than the leaders of some U.S. allies, frustrating Kyiv, European capitals and U.S. lawmakers, including some Republicans.

In December, Reuters reported that U.S. intelligence reports continued to warn that Putin had not abandoned his aims of capturing all of Ukraine and reclaiming parts of Europe that belonged to the former Soviet empire. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard disputed that report at the time.

Asked why he believed Zelenskiy was holding back on negotiations, Trump did not elaborate, saying only: “I just think he’s, you know, having a hard time getting there.”

Every time Trump makes one of these statements blaming President Zelenskyy it eventually leaks out that he spoke to Putin by phone shortly before he dumps all over Ukraine. I expect this time will be no different.

This is a crime against humanity.

Since October, russians have conducted 256 attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid and heating system.

The terrorists targeted 11 hydro power plants, 45 largest combined heating and power stations, 49 thermal power plants, and 151 substations.

It Is Russian Missiles, “Shaheds,” and Attempts to Destroy Ukraine That Are Clear Evidence That It Is Not Agreements at All That Russia Is Seeking – Address by the President

15 January 2026 – 20:46

Fellow Ukrainians!

I started the day with a special format – this will be the case every day now, with everyone staying in touch – a special coordination call with everyone responsible for recovery and management under such an emergency. Energy, provision of services in cities and villages. From the Government and the military to the regions, regional authorities and community leaders. Kyiv and the region, Kharkiv and the region, Dnipro region – Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih; Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Chernihiv. Tasks have been defined, and throughout the day the Government must deliver solutions. First and foremost, to increase electricity imports and all possible options for backup supply and support. As for assistance points in cities, there are separate tasks for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including in terms of keeping people really informed. Everyone must be able to contact the 112 hotline and receive assistance, and get information on heating and electricity supply. It is important that state institutions and local authorities maintain full communication with businesses and energy companies – with everyone who can now provide additional resources for our collective resilience. There must be decisions regarding the curfew so that it is easier for entrepreneurs to plan their work. And so that business facilities can be used as assistance points for people. In particular, government officials have already spoken with retail chains. I instructed the Prime Minister of Ukraine and the First Deputy Prime Minister – the Minister of Energy – as well as other government officials to be as active as possible in communicating with the public and to provide maximum support to communities.

Separately, we spoke with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine and the Commander of the Air Force regarding the protection of energy facilities and the needs we have. Today there were again severe strikes on Kharkiv – specifically on critical infrastructure, missile strikes. “Shaheds” targeted Kyiv in the morning and are now attacking it again in the evening. The situation is difficult in the border regions. It is important to strengthen the Dnipro region and Odesa as well – we will intensify our engagement with partners.

I just spoke with Mark Rutte – in particular, about the PURL initiative and our ability to purchase missiles for air defense. We also discussed diplomatic efforts with America – Ukraine has never been and will never be a stumbling block to peace. It is Russian missiles, Russian “shaheds,” and Russia’s attempts to destroy Ukraine that are clear evidence that it is not agreements at all that Russia is seeking. When Ukrainians are left without power for 20–30 hours because of Russia, and when Russian strikes are aimed at breaking our energy system and our people, it is Russia that must be put under pressure. I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine in this. We will conduct our diplomatic work far more actively – both public and official, and non-public and unofficial.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also presented awards to personnel from the Department of State Protection today.

President Congratulated Servicemembers of the Department of the State Protection of Ukraine on Their Professional Holiday and Awarded Them State Honors

Back to Ukraine.

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko – once known as the “gas princess” and a hero of the 2004 Orange revolution – has been accused of heading a vote-buying scheme in parliament by the country’s top anti-corruption authorities. She denies the charge.

— Christopher Miller (@christopherjm.ft.com) January 14, 2026 at 10:00 AM

From The Financial Times:

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been accused of heading a vote-buying scheme in parliament by the country’s top anti-corruption authorities, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Tymoshenko, leader of Ukraine’s Batkivshchyna party, has been served with a notice of suspicion by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (Nabu) after it searched her Kyiv office overnight into Wednesday, the people said.

Nabu, the country’s top independent anti-corruption body, confirmed the searches of an “opposition party leader” but did not name Tymoshenko in a statement and lengthy video published on social media.

Tymoshenko called the allegations “political” and said the search of her office was “nothing more than a grandiose PR stunt” that had “absolutely nothing to do with law or justice”, in a statement provided through her press secretary.

“I categorically reject all these absurd accusations,” she said.

People involved in the probe confirmed to the FT that a woman with a blonde crown braid — Tymoshenko’s signature hairstyle — whose face is pixelated in the Nabu video is the former political firebrand who led the country’s 2004 pro-democracy Orange revolution to become Ukraine’s first woman prime minister in 2005.

Her notice of suspicion widens a political scandal roiling parliament since late last year that involves several sitting lawmakers, including some from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s ruling party, whom Nabu accuses of taking part in the scheme.

Tymoshenko is a staunch political opponent of Zelenskyy, although like most Ukrainian political leaders, she has largely refrained from publicly criticising the president in wartime. In the past year, she has taken a more critical stance, including against a deal signed by Kyiv and Washington in April offering the US special access to Ukraine’s critical mineral reserves.

She had supported a widely criticised law forced through parliament by Zelenskyy and his ruling party in July that reduced the powers of Nabu and its sister agency, the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (Sapo). Public protests and western criticism forced Zelenskyy and parliament to reverse course soon after.

Nabu said in a statement that “the suspect” had “initiated discussions with certain MPs on introducing a systemic mechanism for providing unlawful benefits in exchange for loyal behaviour during votes”. The people familiar with the matter confirmed to the FT that ‘‘the suspect’’ referred to Tymoshenko.

“It was not about one-off arrangements but a regular co-operation mechanism that envisaged advance payments and was calculated to last for a long period,” Nabu added in the statement.

In the full Nabu video, a person who sounds like Tymoshenko is heard offering cash to an MP in return for support on specific votes. The woman believed to be Tymoshenko is also heard promising payment for recruited allies and describing plans to co-ordinate voting instructions via the Signal messaging app.

An image of a Signal chat shared in the Nabu video appears to show that the MPs allegedly involved in the scheme were instructed to hold up the appointment of Zelenskyy’s chosen ministers, who eventually were voted in on Tuesday.

The agency also filmed a raid on Tymoshenko’s party office, showing stacks of $100 bills laid out in front of the woman wearing a crown of braids.

Russia struck a playground in the city center of the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, Governor Maksym Kozytskyi reported on Jan. 15.

No casualties were reported as a result of the Russian drone attack, according to preliminary information, he said in a post to Telegram.

“The blast wave shattered windows in nearby buildings — including (a nearby) Polytechnic Institute and residential buildings,” Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi reported.

Sadovyi said that the targeted playground was near a monument to early 20th-century Ukrainian right-wing militant Stepan Bandera and noted that Russia struck a “symbolic place” that “the aggressor fears the most.”

An air raid alert was first issued for Lviv Oblast at 6:09 a.m. local time and ended at 6:51 a.m. local time.

Russia continues to escalate its campaign against the EU and its member states.

Russia continues to expand their hybrid warfare in Europe:

🔹Track damage in Germany caused a freight train derailment around the time a US military convoy was scheduled to pass through

🔹GPS jamming has forced ships and planes to use older navigation systems in the Baltic Sea

🚨”The digital tanks are already here”: A Russian cyberattack almost caused a blackout in Poland at the end of December.

Multiple electricity producers were attacked at the same time as weather conditions made the situation more difficult.

More of these seem likely in 2026.

I Have Tasked a Review of Curfew Regulation: During This State of Emergency, Curfews Can Be Lifted for Some Cities and Communities – Address by the President

14 January 2026 – 20:01

Dear Ukrainians!

It’s been a long day. I just held an energy-sector meeting – the most important one today. Many issues have been discussed. Denys Shmyhal has been appointed First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine; his key task is to handle the current emergency situation in the energy sector caused by Russian strikes and the harsh winter weather. We separately analyzed the situation in some of our cities – it’s especially difficult in Kyiv, as well as Odesa, Dnipro region – Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih – and several other cities and regions. We can see that much has been done, particularly in Kharkiv, where local authorities were prepared. Kyiv, unfortunately, has done much less – far too little has been done in the capital. And even these past few days, I haven’t seen sufficient effort – all of this must be urgently corrected. Decisions must be made. Legally, the state of emergency in the energy sector will be officially declared – this will provide more possibilities. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine will simplify to the maximum all processes related to connecting backup energy equipment to the grid. Zero bureaucracy. I have instructed them to increase electricity import capacities – using all business opportunities. In Kyiv and other cities, there must be more, much more, assistance points for people – Points of Invincibility. I have tasked a review of curfew regulations: during this state of emergency, curfews can be lifted for some cities and communities where the security situation allows it. The government officials must present the corresponding proposals. So that people have access to all necessary support at any time, and that businesses can plan their operations more rationally.

I would like to especially thank all energy companies, regional and local authorities, and everyone ready to work together with us, with the state institutions. Unity must be maximized for the sake of shared results.

I held a meeting with the new Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov. The top priority is the protection of the skies. Decisions, tasks – he’s got everything. We must support the front. Provisioning for brigades, funding, drone supplies – transformation is coming. There are specific tasks for our diplomats – the entire Ukrainian diplomatic corps, which must live with the same problems, the same emotions, the same goals as all Ukrainians. We need more support for our state and our people, for our resilience, for recovery. The necessary requests to partners have been made.

And one more thing.

Today, I spoke with Rustem Umerov and other members of our negotiating team. Work on the documents – security guarantees, economic agreements, and the political document – needs to be swift. On our end, we are being as productive as possible. We also expect energy from the American side in their work. I personally am very much expecting this. I thank everyone who stands with us, who stands with Ukraine.

Glory to Ukraine!

First Lady Zelenska was in Chernihiv today where she opened an age 12 to 21 youth space.

A “12–21” Youth Space Opened in Chernihiv, by the Olena Zelenska Foundation

14 January 2026 – 18:34

A new “12–21” youth space has opened in Chernihiv – the third in the network developed by the Olena Zelenska Foundation. The space is designed for adolescents and young people aged 12 to 21, combining leisure activities, peer-to-peer interaction, and professional psychosocial support.

During the opening, Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, met with teenagers and young people from Chernihiv. Unfortunately, due to an air raid alert, the meeting had to take place in a shelter. Despite this, the young visitors were able to explore the space and experience its welcoming atmosphere.

“For us, it is important that young people come here not out of obligation, but from a genuine need. They should come seeking a sense of safety, support, and acceptance,” Olena Zelenska said.

The First Lady emphasized that Chernihiv is experiencing a difficult winter, with shelling and power outages. Under such conditions, it is especially important for young people to have a place where they are not left alone with their worries. This is exactly what the “12–21” space aims to provide.

The space will host a variety of activities, including creative workshops, training sessions, book clubs, and movie nights. Social workers and psychologists will also be available on-site, offering confidential and free support for any questions or concerns.

The “12–21” youth spaces are already operating in Bila Tserkva and Khmelnytskyi. The network is expanding to ensure that support for adolescents and young people is accessible across all regions of Ukraine.

Denmark, Greenland failed to win the Trump team over

— Politico (@politico.com) January 14, 2026 at 3:12 PM

From Politico:

Denmark and Greenland “still have a fundamental disagreement” with the U.S. over President Donald Trump’s desire to control the Arctic territory, Denmark’s foreign minister said Wednesday.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his Greenland counterpart, Vivian Motzfeldt, finally had their chance to try to turn down the temperature at the White House after more than a year of aggressive internet trolling, statements and demands from the U.S. Their conversation did little to dissuade Trump and his team from their hold on Greenland.

“We didn’t manage to change the American position,” Rasmussen told reporters after the meeting. “It’s clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland. We made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of the Kingdom.”

Rasmussen and Motzfeldt took pains to describe the session as respectful, frank and constructive but their frustration that their longtime ally would not cooperate was clear.

“It is of course very emotional for all of us,” Rasmussen said.

The U.S., Denmark and Greenland agreed in the meeting to convene high-level working groups to see if they could find a way forward, but Rasmussen said he was unsure whether it would be possible. One EU diplomat, granted anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the sensitive talks, said this was a positive outcome because the sides agreed to keep the lines of diplomacy open.

Trump said later Wednesday while signing executive orders at the White House that he was still deciding how to address his concerns about Greenland, which he said the U.S. needs for his planned Golden Dome missile defense system.

“If we don’t go in Russia’s going to go in and China’s going to go in,” he said and declined to rule out using military force.

“There’s not a thing that Denmark can do about it if Russia or China wants to occupy Greenland. But there’s everything we can do, we found that out last week with Venezuela,” Trump said. “I can’t rely on Denmark being able to fend themselves off.”

Demands that would violate Denmark and Greenland’s sovereignty are “totally unacceptable,” Rasmussen said.

Denmark has contributed $15 billion to Arctic security over the past two years and has pressed the U.S. and other NATO countries to do more through the alliance, Rasmussen said in the briefing to reporters. Denmark announced earlier Wednesday that it would beef up its security presence in Greenland, which has been under Danish control for nearly 300 years.

The officials noted much of what Trump and his team continue to say about Greenland is untrue, including Trump’s often repeated claim that Greenland is crawling with Russian and Chinese warships. Rasmussen said there has not been a Chinese warship in the Arctic for a decade.

Those statements and Trump’s threatening tone do not yield a constructive dialogue, Rasmussen said.

“It is not easy to think innovatively about solutions when you wake up every morning to different threats,” he said.

I’ll remind everyone that this entire idea of the US buying or conquering Greenland began as a Russian influence operation. Russian intelligence forged a letter from Greenland’s foreign minister in 2019 and sent it to Tom Cotton. Neither Cotton, nor his staff bothered to vet or verify the letter. They didn’t contact the Danish Embassy or the Greenland consulate. Instead Cotton just took it right to Trump, then started talking about it on the Sunday gasbag shows and during Senate committee hearings. Cotton was targeted because he’s a far too credulous ignoramus and Russian intelligence took advantage of that fact.

From United24 Media:

Nearly five years ago, Russia reportedly floated the idea of the US purchasing Greenland in a fake fundraising letter sent to Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, according to Danish intelligence.

The accusations reemerged on social media over the weekend, just days before Trump’s inauguration.

On January 7, US President-elect Donald Trump stated that he would not dismiss the possibility of using military or economic measures to acquire the Danish overseas territory of Greenland after assuming office on January 20.

In 2022, the Danish Security and Intelligence Service determined that the 2019 letter was a forgery, likely orchestrated by Russia. A Danish intelligence report suggested that Moscow aimed to create tension between Denmark, the US, and Greenland. Moscow denied the accusations in an email to Reuters.

“It is highly likely that the letter was fabricated and shared on the internet by Russian influence agents, who wanted to create confusion and a possible conflict between Denmark, the USA, and Greenland,” said the Danish Security and Intelligence Service in January 2022.

There’s a screen shot of the forged letter at the link.
