Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Come on, man.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Doing What They Do Best

by Tim F|  March 4, 20109:46 am| 45 Comments

Republicans have a huge robocall effort today to sic their teabaggers on key Dem Congressmen. That sucks, but it illustrates a point that I cannot stress enough: these calls make a difference.

Do you know your Representative’s staffers on a first-name basis? Maybe you should. They appreciate hearing a friendly voice once in a while.

Switchboard: (202) 224-3121.

Guide for first-timers here.

***Update***

It will help to point out to your Rep that 95% of these angry callers wouldn’t vote for a Democrat if Jesus Christ showed up at their door and told them to.

Off to the doctor to see if I can remove the brace. Woo.

Also, I don’t think enough of you fully appreciated (or even noticed, for that matter) what DougJ did with the title to his post last night. We’re not worthy.

Open Thread: Penis Substitutes At the Ready!

This post is in: Open Threads, Assholes, Bring on the Brawndo!, We Are All Mayans Now

There is something seriously wrong with a society where the headline “Starbucks Asks Not to Be Center of Gun Debate” appears in the New York Times:

Coffee chain Starbucks Corp. is sticking to its policy of letting customers carry guns where it’s legal and said it does not want to be put in the middle of a larger gun-control debate.
__
The company’s statement, issued Wednesday, stems from recent campaign by some gun owners, who have walked into Starbucks and other businesses to test state laws that allow gun owners to carry weapons openly in public places. Gun control advocates have protested.
__
The fight began heating up in January in Northern California and has since spread to other states and other companies, bolstered by the pro-gun group OpenCarry.org.

Starbucks? This is your bold, patriotic idea of a dangerous venue in which to flaunt your precious Second Amendment pacifiers? Because laptop-wielding hipsters are soooo freaking terrifying? Because the baristers are armed with… scalding hot milk foam?
__
If your gun is a tool, it is something to be treated with the respect you’d show any potentially dangerous tool. Somehow I don’t see a spontaneous uprising of lumberjacks carrying chainsaws and construction workers flourishing jackhammers at the local Starbucks, because this is the real world, not a badly scripted porno movie. Semi-retired CPAs who listen to a lot of Rush Limbaugh, please copy.
__
Anyone who has to demonstrate his political allegiances by flashing a gun at a Starbucks has presumably decided that it’s too risky to “support the Second Amendment” at a Dunkin Donuts… where the professional security forces hang out. Or even at the local McDonald’s, where some safety-conscious mommy at the ball pit would be liable to give you a very hurtful talking-to.
__
Is it possible that that this organization is actually a Borat-style performance? Because, seriously… Manliness FAIL.

My heart is inditing a good matter

It may take us a while to get this set up, and I have no idea how to get it set up! But I want to try to endow an Al Weisel Award For Internet Humor.

The Jon Swift blog was a ray of funny sunshine in a humorless cloudy world. And it’s the least we can do.

We’ll try to get something like an endowment set up soon. But in a world of short attention spans I wanted to get this up now.

Unbelievably Frustrating

I understand that as a blogger I can afford to take the long view on health care reform, while many members of Congress unquestionably have their career at stake over this one vote. Nonetheless I think that Representatives who have gotten spooked by bad HCR poll numbers are making a terrible mistake. It might help to argue like Josh Marshall does that vulnerable seats got killed the worst in 2002 1994 (inexplicably got the date wrong there). He’s certainly right, but dry logic has only so much impact on crisis days like today. These Reps need a heap of supportive phone calls from constituents.

This is crunch time. Please phone and make sure that your Representative will supports the current road map: pass the Senate bill, then resolve issues such as the excise tax with a reconciliation fix. Tomorrow may be too late.

A predictable bit of stupidity…

Perry wins a low turn-out Republican primary, so naturally one must rush into print the “Perry is a viable candidate for 2012” story. And of course these wankers were first out of the gate with this drivel:

typical Politico foolishness

It is a typical example of the foolishness one can read everyday at Politico. What I really like is the “any reporter” in the upper corner. No doubt. This is what one can expect to read from “any ‘reporter'” at this Pravda for the Beltway.

While this was their lead story this morning, it is safe to assume that it will not be the stupidest thing posted at Politico today. But still, it is a classic. The stupid of it just burns.

Cheers
