Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

White supremacy is terrorism.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Books are my comfort food!

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Status Quo

Well, I was hoping that Obama would outline a clear plan towards wrapping up HCR that could rally Congress to finish the job and move on. I feared that Obama would pare back expectations with some plan involving splitting the bill or negotiating with Snowe. As far as I can tell neither happened.

Things could change again by the time you read this, but for now Nancy Pelosi claims to have enough votes for the Senate bill if the Senate reciprocates (and maybe if it doesn’t; that was not clear). That leaves Reid’s reconciliation whip count as the one major question left up in the air. If you have limited time, probably the most important call you can make today is to let both Senators know that we need a reconciliation deal now. Time will not do the bill any favors. We particularly need calls from readers in key states like Louisiana, Arkansas, Virginia and Montana.

Mcc has the whip count here. Share your experiences in the comments.

Not sure what is going on, but I went to bed miserable, in excruciating pain, and at some point in the night it broke like a fever. In just a few hours of sleep, I have gone from a 8-9 on the pain scale to about a 4-5.

I call that a win.

Now that you all have slept on it, what did you think of the SOTU address? I’m going to check out thw transcript later.

Morning Open Thread: Geek Fashion Query

Since the new geekalicious iPad is too large to carry in even the most capacious pair of Dockers, does that mean we’ll be seeing better options for man-purses that don’t look like hiking gear?

You know, ‘messenger bags’ that don’t weigh more than ten pounds empty and/or feature ersatz dayglo ‘tribal’ decorations?

(Srsly, from my position as an Old who still hasn’t worked out the camera on her cell phone, the iPad’s e-book reader looks legible enough on the news clips that I might actually consider saving towards the second-gen version, assuming that iPads actually sell for $500 versus $300 for a Kindle. And if I were doing hour-long commutes via public transit again. But I ain’t their target market.)

Watching the State of the Confederacy Speech…

I find myself looking for the fella with the heavy thumb on the applause sign.

This was, I think, even sillier than the Bobby Jindal response.

Treat this as yet another open thread.

Cheers

By tipping, I didn’t mean cash, I meant a thank-you card and a gift cert. to a restaurant or Starbucks, etc. Would that be ok?
