Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“They all knew.”

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Bark louder, little dog.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

We will not go back.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Continuing downriver, we camped on the Guatemala side below the last ruin we visited – Piedras Negras. This ruin is only accessible from the river or via a two hour hike on a jungle trail. Because it is so difficult to get to, and because the Guatemalan government is so poor, the site was the least excavated and the worst preserved among the sites we visited.

This was a giant Mayan calendar.

Leaving Yaxchilan we continued to paddle downstream for the next couple of days. Sometimes we would camp on the Mexican side of the river. Other days it would be in Guatemala.

The geology of the river banks kept changing. While it was mostly all limestone, the shapes caused by erosion constantly changed.

The next day we boarded a van and headed south to Frontera Corazol on the Usumacinta River (aka the Sacred Monkey River). The river there is the border between Mexico and Guatemala. The rafting company who organized the trip is dedicated to protecting wild rivers around the world. We were told this was the mildest white water river they do.

We got into inflatable rafts and kayaks and started an easy paddle down the river.

I recently took a guided tour in Chiapas Mexico to visit Mayan ruins and raft down the Rio Usumacinta (known to the Mayans as the Sacred Monkey river). The first two days we traveled overland from the city of Palenque to visit archaeological sites. After that we got on the water and visited two more sites and went through occasional whitewater.

Palenque

Palenque was the largest and most fully excavated of the various sites we saw on this trip. However, it is estimated that less than 10% of the site had been exposed and researched. Most structures are still buried in the surrounding jungle.

This is the palace and observatory. The tower is not in the process of settling like a certain tower in Italy. It was built at that angle to align it with a specific astronomical event. Our guide told us that other sites have similar structure but with different amounts of lean depending on their location.
